How the Academy Pushed the Diversity Needle with 683 Member Invites

29 June 2016 2:54 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

“Introducing the Academy class of 2016,” reads the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences website announcement of its invited new members Wednesday. And while joining that august organization is a singular honor, many say they were surprised to learn of their inclusion — mainly because they hadn’t applied for membership. Traditionally, that’s a laborious process that can take years before you get recommended by peers, vetted by your branch, and finally invited. Every year it’s a shock that someone like, say Tina Fey, IFC’s Arianna Bocco, last year’s Oscar-winner Margaret Sixel (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), or Oscar marketer Lisa Taback, wasn’t already a member.

Academy Embraces Diversity With 683 New Members, Including John Boyega and Michael B. Jordan

29 June 2016 12:38 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

After its most contentious year ever, it appears the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is finally attempting to correct its severe diversity problem. The organization announced its official new members today — a whopping list of 683 names — and the class of 2016 is 46% female and 41% people of color.

The new roster follows a year full of controversy against the lack of diversity among Oscar nominees and within the Academy itself. Last November, President Cheryl Boone Isaacs issued a 5-year initiative to help diversify the Academy, and while there is still a lot of work to be done, the new members represent a step in the right direction.

Notable new additions to the Academy this year include: John Boyega, Michael B. Jordan, Oscar Isaac, Regina King, Marielle Heller, Dakota Johnson, Tom Hiddleston, Eva Mendes, Rachel McAdams, Michelle Rodriguez, Greta Gerwig, Damon Waynes Jr, »

The new members are heavily weighted to favor women and people of color - 46% are women, 41% are people of color. Should all elect to join, it would shift the demographic makeup of the Academy from 75 to 73% male, and from 93% to 89% white.

28 Oscar winners and 98 nominees are on the list, while 283 are considered international members. Amongst the high profile names are actors like John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Idris Elba, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis, Greta Gerwig, Andrew Garfield, Michael B. The Iceman Cometh: Dwayne Johnson Shares Cool New Set Pic From Fast 8

29 June 2016 9:59 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

What’s an impressive ride without a badass driver behind the wheel?

One week on from introducing fans to his hulking Ice Ram, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has taken to Instagram to share an appropriately cool action shot of Hobbs, the equally muscular ally that will appear in next year’s Fast 8 as you’ve never seen him before.

That’s because, four movies into his stint aboard Universal’s Fast and Furious juggernaut, Johnson is aiming to bring Hobbs back to his murky roots. Exactly how that will play out in Fast 8 remains to be seen, but it would seem that the wrestler-turned-movie star is set for a larger chunk of screentime in Universal’s 2017 tentpole.

As Johnson sums up so succinctly: “The Iceman cometh. And I don’t f—eth around.”

Ever since production started on this high-octane sequel, the production has been giving fans sneak peeks at the sets and the cast as part of their #FastFridays tradition. Instead of a new video, though, today we get five new photos that feature some of the cars driven by main characters during the scenes set in Iceland.

We've previously seen some of these cars in a Fast Fridays video from Iceland earlier this month, but we didn't know who any of these cars belonged to. These new photos, which were posted on the franchise's Facebook, reveal that Dom (Vin Diesel) will be driving a bullet-riddled Dodge Charger, while Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) drives a Rally Fighter, Tej (Ludacris) rolls in a tank-like vehicle known as a Ripsaw, »

Fast and Furious 8 Gets Helen Mirren Behind the Wheel

15 June 2016 1:07 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last year, just before Furious 7 hit theaters, Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren revealed that it was her "great ambition" to star in a Fast & Furious movie as a "mad driver." The actress added in that interview that she kept "putting it out there" that she wants to be a part of the franchise, but the filmmakers never responded. It seems her persistence has paid off, with the actress confirming that she will in fact star in Fast and Furious 8.

While promoting her new movie Eye in the Sky, which recently arrived on Blu-ray and DVD, the actress confirmed that she's "about to do" Fast & Furious 8 in an interview with Elle. Unfortunately, she wouldn't shed too much light on her character, but the actress did add that she'd only be a part of the sequel under one condition. Here's what she had to say below.

"Well, yes. I've always rather loved driving. I said, 'I'll be in it, but only if I'm allowed to drive if I do drive in it.' But we'll see. We'll see how it transpires. Film is a wonderful thing and it can be so many different things. I don't want to turn my back on any of the different ways movies can be. I love the movies. I love going to the films. I like very serious films, I love foreign films, and I love big, fun movies-as long as they're well made and they've got good scripts. That's the most important thing."

Last year, after Helen Mirren's remarks about the franchise, Vin Diesel himself teased that "she's on the list," adding, "Be careful what you wish for, Helen." Production has been under way since last month, although it isn't known how long principal photography is expected to last. We'll have to wait and see if more details about who she's playing will surface as filming continues.

Helen Mirren joins a cast that includes Fast & Furious franchise stars Vin Diese, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Lucas Black and Kurt Russell. Charlize Theron has come aboard to play the new villain Cipher, with other new casting additions including Scott Eastwood and Kristofer Hivju. F. Gary Gray is directing from a script by Chris Morgan, with Universal setting an April 14, 2017 release date. Stay tuned for more on Helen Mirren's casting in Fast and Furious 8 as more details unfold. »
