She plays the banjo for the music band Dixie Chicks, along with her sister Martie, and Natalie Maines. She, along with Natalie and Martie, were featured in Dixie Chicks on the Fly (2000) (TV). They also sung songs for the Julia Roberts film, Runaway Bride (1999). In May 1999, Emily married Charlie Robison.

Emily taught herself how to play the banjo at age 10. She, along with sister Martie Maguire, were founding members of the Dixie Chicks. The group started by playing street corners in Dallas.
