Danny Glover: the good cop

18 May 2012 4:11 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He found fame as a policeman in the Lethal Weapon films, but it's his political activism that really drives him. He talks about his beloved Haiti, Obama's disappointing presidency and his friendship with Mel Gibson

A few years ago, Danny Glover sat in his car and cried. The Hollywood star and political activist had just heard the news that his friend, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Haiti's first democratically elected president, had been toppled in a coup backed by the Us and France. "It was 28 February 2004 and I sat in that parking lot crying uncontrollably, knowing that we'd have to start building again."

Glover fixes me with tired eyes as we sit in an upstairs room of the Crossroads Women's Centre in London's Kentish Town on a rainy Saturday afternoon. He has just flown in from the Us and the same evening will give a speech at the centre during a fundraiser for the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund. »

'American Idol': The thousandth episode of Hollywood narrows it to 42

16 February 2012 7:15 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

As Hollywood Week drags on for what seems like its fifth week, the "American Idol" hopefuls are put through another group performance. Except they get more time and professional-looking costumes and lighting, so it's not quite as fun as the crazy Group Night.

We kick things off on the bus that hauls the Idols to Las Vegas, for reasons kind of passing understanding. Why move venues? Why not keep them in the same building they've been living in for all of Hollywood Week and just completely Stockholm Syndrome them?

The judges tell the 70 kids left that they are going to sing music from the 1950s1960s, which will definitely prepare them for on the live shows when they get criticized for being current or not knowing who they are as an artist. *eye roll*

Now, I'm criticizing music from this era. I love the 50s/60s. Love. But ... c'mon. We all know how "Idol" is. »

'American Idol': Jermaine Jones is a 'Superstar'

1 February 2012 6:34 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

One of the most adorable auditionees of "American Idol" Season 11 was Jermaine Jones in Portland. He was so nervous! He was visibly sweating his butt off. Poor guy. But he sang "Superstar," which we always think of as a Carpenters song, but he did the Luther version. And it was great.

Randy said of the audition, "When you show the dynamics, with the low, with the power, with the softness, I love it" and Randy added, "It's a natural gift that you have in the way that you sing that you don't hear every day."

He reminded us more than a little of Paul Robeson. What did you think, "Idol" fans? »
