Film Review: The Book (Finally) Closes on ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’

1 February 2017 2:51 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Guilty pleasures are the order of the day, especially when we are facing daily signs of a real, impending apocalypse. End of the world by zombies remains one of the most popular cataclysmic cinematic events and “Resident Evil” is proof. “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” proves that what should be dead can come back to life, but the real question is if it actually should.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

The “Resident Evil” film franchise has been around for over half my life and has proven to be the most successful (read: profitable) film series based on a video game to date. Having grown up on the video games, and having the first film come out during a probably impressionable time in my life (read: puberty), I have had this lingering fascination towards the franchise. The synergy created by combining several of my interests (video games, film, zombies, strong female protagonists, etc) has »

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter review: “A nail-biting thrill ride…”

Resident Evil The Final Chapter review: Milla Jovovich returns for the fifth film in this billion-dollar series, but is it time to end things now?

Resident Evil The Final Chapter review by Benjamin Read.

Love them or hate them, the Resident Evil films are the most successful video game adaptations in cinematic history. The five films released so far may have received a mixed response from critics, but they have also grossed almost a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Now, after a 15 year journey with Alice, her merry band of disposable misfits, and more mutated zombies than you could shake a stick at, we have come to the end. So, how does Resident Evil: The Final Chapter round things off?

Well, firstly it should be made clear that if the previous instalments weren’t your cup of tea, then this film definitely wont do much to change that. »

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter pushes the franchise past $1 billion

30 January 2017 10:10 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite earning the best reviews of the series [although our own Rob Kojder didn’t like it] and the lowest opening weekend of the series, Paul W.S. Anderson and Sony Pictures have a lot to celebrate with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter as the franchise has crossed $1 billion worldwide.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter earned just $13 million from its opening weekend, which wasn’t enough to unseat Split from the top spot, or trouble Hidden Figures and A Dog’s Purpose. However a strong opening overseas has pushed the film to $78 million worldwide.

The film opened to number one in Japan last December.

It should be noted, however, that while Sony are reporting the franchise has pushed $1 billion, Boxofficemojo claim the series has so far earned $994 million. Either way, it will cross $1 billion next week.

Resident Evil: from the start screen to the big screenResident Evil: from the start screen to the big screenTanner Zipchen1/30/2017 11:11:00 Am

Resident Evil, the most successful videogame to film adaptation of all time, is coming to a close with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Of course, the six Resident Evil films are “loosely” based on the video games, but how much do the two actually cross over? Some of the bigger details are the same; both are set in and around Racoon City and both the films and video games are facing the T-Virus-inflicted zombie apocalypse (which the Umbrella Corportation is responsible for). However, it’s the characters that both separate and unite the film and video game worlds. The films follow the story of Alice (Milla Jovovich) who sets out on a mission to find her identity and wipe out the T-Virus. As she journeys through »

M. Night Shyamalan's Split Wins the Box Office 2 Weeks in a Row

29 January 2017 11:36 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While January doesn't often produce huge box office hits, fans have come out in full force for Oscar-nominated films like Hidden Figures and La La Land, which both continue to fare well with solid box office numbers throughout the month. Last weekend, M. Night Shyamalan's Split over-performed with an impressive box office win with $40 million, and it was certainly expected to repeat, even with three new releases hitting theaters. Joining the box office fray this weekend is Sony's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Universal's A Dog's Purpose and The Weinstein Company's Gold. The race was expected to be much closer, but Split took advantage of a minimal second weekend drop to easily win with $26.2 million

The estimates from Box Office Mojo reveal that Split actually expanded into 161 more theaters for a total of 3,199, which may have helped minimize the traditional second weekend drop. The M. Night Shyamalan thriller only dropped 34.3% in its second weekend, »

Box Office: ‘Split’ Splinters ‘A Dog’s Purpose,’ ‘Resident Evil’ to Repeat No. 1 on Friday

28 January 2017 7:22 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Split” is once again twisting its way to the top of the box office after beating out newcomers “A Dog’s Purpose” and “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” on Friday. The film, from Universal via its partnership with Blumhouse Productions, earned nearly $8 million on Friday on its way to a $25 to $26 million second weekend at 3,199 locations.

“A Dog’s Purpose,” also distributed by Universal, but made by Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media, fetched $5.3 million from 3,058 theaters to put it solidly in second for the weekend.

“A Dog’s Purpose” met blowback when TMZ leaked a video showing a German Shepherd struggling during production. The video sparked outrage online and PETA called for a boycott, while the filmmakers have insisted that the clip did not accurately represent what happened on set. Still, Universal canceled the film’s intended premiere and press junket, and the situation dropped estimates for the film’s »

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Review

27 January 2017 3:10 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

I sit before you a broken, devastated Resident Evil fan after watching Paul W.S. Anderson’s final nail in Alice’s coffin, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. This is coming from a Resident Evil apologist, nonetheless. Someone who enthusiastically purchased the original trilogy on special edition. Someone who’s most swoon-worthy cinematic crush is Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine. Someone who goes to bat for Kevin Durand as Barry Burton, or refers to all six five previous Resident Evil movies as sweet horror junk food. These sentiments are wholly sincere, but even an Alice devotee like myself can’t recognize The Final Chapter as a fitting means to any franchise “end” (there’s always sequel potential). Abandon hope and pray for a swift finish all you want – welcome to the lowest depths of mainstream horror Hell.

Box Office: James McAvoy’s ‘Split’ Muzzling ‘A Dog’s Purpose,’ ‘Resident Evil’

27 January 2017 2:00 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

James McAvoy’s horror-thriller “Split” is showing plenty of staying power, heading for its second consecutive victory at the North American box office with about $19 million at 3,199 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

The opening of controversial family drama “A Dog’s Purpose” appeared to be performing at the lower end of expectations in second — with about $18 million at 3,058 sites — following a boycott launched by PETA over a leaked video showing a German Shepherd struggling during production. The filmmakers have insisted that PETA and TMZ have mischaracterized what took place.

PETA’s PR attack appears to have had a moderate toll, given that forecasts before the boycott was launched were as high as $25 million. “Split” should dominate moviegoing on Friday with $7 million while “A Dog’s Purpose” puts its paws on about $5 million.

Box Office: Can ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Still Win the Weekend After Canine Controversy?

24 January 2017 3:56 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal-Amblin’s “A Dog's Purpose” faces serious challenges this weekend in the face of a week-old call for a boycott of the canine feel-good film, which opens at about 3,050 North American locations.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has blistered everyone involved with the movie in the wake of the Jan. 18 release of a leaked video showing a German Shepherd named Hercules balking at performing a stunt in churning water. Producer Gavin Polone, director Lasse Hallstrom, co-screenwriter W. Bruce Cameron and animal trainers from Birds and Animals Unlimited have said TMZ and PETA mischaracterized what actually took place — insisting that Hercules was reluctant to go into water only because he had not rehearsed at the specific  location. Polone also alleged that PETA had edited the video in a misleading way.

An online petition launched on Jan. 20 also called for a boycott unless the filmmakers donated a “significant »

Can Resident Evil 6 Take Down Split at the Box Office?

24 January 2017 8:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The month of January doesn't often usher in huge box office grosses, but horror fans came out in droves to see M. Night Shyamalan's Split, which took in just over $40 million last weekend. This thriller will have its work cut out for it this weekend, going up against three new releases, Sony's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Universal's A Dog's Purpose and The Weinstein Company's Gold to close out the month of January. We're predicting that, while it certainly may be a close race this weekend, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will take down Split with a projected $21.7 million, just barely beating Split with $20.6 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that Resident Evil 6 will open in roughly 3,000 theaters, followed by A Dog's Purpose in 2,900 theaters and Gold in 2,200 theaters. As of now, Gold is sporting a middling 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and A Dog's Purpose »
