Awards Season Continues With Visual Effects, Sound Mixing And Makeup Nominations

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.

First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). ‘Gravity’ Tops Visual Effects Society Nominations
The Visual Effects Society has announced this year’s nominees for the 12th annual VES awards.

As previously announced, the Visionary Award will be presented to Alfonso Cuarón for “Gravity,” which led all films with eight vfx nominations. “Pacific Rim” received six, while “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and Iron Man 3” received five each.

Those pics were nominated in the “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature” category. In a surprise, “The Lone Ranger” was nominated in feature supporting vfx. Disney’s disastrous Western was quite f/x-driven, though many of its effects were in-camera practical f/x, which aren’t a major focus for the Ves. Other supporting effects nominees include ”Rush,” “The Great Gatsby,” The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “White House Down.”

Gravity, Iron Man 3 earn Ves nods
The Visual Effects Society (Ves) delivered no surprises on January 14 as it announced the nominations for the 12th Annual Ves Awards.

As previously announced, the Visionary Award will be presented to Alfonso Cuarón, and The Lifetime Achievement Award to effects pioneer John Dykstra.

The 12th Annual Ves Awards Ceremony will take place on February 12 in Los Angeles.
