Phillip Phillips Refused Doctor's Orders To Get Kidney Surgery Until He Won "American Idol"

"American Idol" winn Phil Phillips endured severe kidney stones throughout his time on the show, refusing to get kidney surgery until he triumphed.

“I've been sick this whole show,” Phillips told Kelly Ripa after calling into "Live! With Kelly" on Thursday morning. “I'm trying to get all my work done, to recover.”

He is expected to undergo the procedure in the next two weeks with his parents at his side, reports TMZ.com.

“I'll be having [surgery] here soon," Phillips told Ripa. "I'm getting prepared for all that. I'm ready to feel better, feel like myself.”

His father, Phillip Phillips Sr. told Radar Online that "it's been a long hard struggle" for his son.

"I'm so proud of him. He just sucked it up and endured and he overcomes."

And so, the war over The Weinstein Company’s provocative documentary, Bully, ends – to use an exhausted cliché – not with a bang, but with a whimper. Since its release at the end of March, the doc has grossed approximately $3 million; not bad for a reality piece, and, measured against the flick’s $1.1 million budget, it means TWC will go home with some money in its pocket. But considering the thundering opening bombardments which accompanied the film’s debut, it’s hard not to look at that sum as a bit of a disappointment. After all, Disney’s warm and cuddly and topically irrelevant doc Chimpanzee, released almost three weeks later to a lot less fuss, has earned over $27 million.

Undoubtedly, there are going to be those who think Bully was hobbled at the box office by its nasty run-in with the MPAA. But I keep looking at Bully’s $3 mil, »

Phillip Phillips barely staved off emergency surgery for an American idol win last night (5-23-2012) and will be going under the knife very soon to help correct a kidney issue. According to the USA Today, the newly crowned signer called in to the Live! With Kelly show and told Kelly Ripa he could not make her show next week as he is still ailing and unable to make the New York trip. Phillips was hospitalized at one point early in the season, and has been battling kidney problems. He added, "It's been tough. I've had a lot of great people around me, great doctors. The men really pulled out some bizarre entry stunts to get noticed by "The Bachelorette" Emily Maynard on last week's season premiere.

There was a guy who showed up with a glass slipper, a guy dressed up like an elderly person and even one guy who showed up with an egg. On "Gma" (weekdays, 7 a.m. Et on ABC) Monday morning, Lara Spencer asked Emily what she thought of the strange entrances. "What were you thinking when these guys were coming out? ... These are my selections?"

"Bachelorette" Emily Maynard stopped by "Live with Kelly" Monday morning (May 21) to talk about her experience on the show.

"You know what, it was a really good learning experience for me. If any of those guys had come up to me out [on the town], I would've said 'Absolutely not. Thank you, but no thank you.' But I gave them a chance and they gave me a chance and they really are great guys," says Emily.

Host Kelly Ripa and guest host Taye Diggs are not convinced any of these fellas are good enough for Emily and were particularly weirded out by Travis, the guy who brought the ostrich egg. Emily agrees that it was pretty weird.

"It was very weird and I didn't know what to say, but I told him he needs to lose the egg. They named it Shelly and you'll see the end of Shelly," Emily promises.

Growing up with rather petite genes, we were always taught to steer clear of clothes that overpowered us. Yet Kelly Ripa and Ginnifer Goodwin both took the same fashion risk, clothing their diminutive frames in a powerful pink dress with oversized bell sleeves.

Goodwin picked the neon dress by Roksanda Ilincic (a favorite of Lady Gaga) back in January at the 2012 People's Choice Awards, offsetting the bright color with black accessories, that edgy cropped haircut and a rather serious red carpet stance.

Ripa, on the other hand, channeled her blonde, bubbly persona on the "Late Show With David Letterman" this week, wearing her hot pink dress with red and pink platform pumps (and an ankle tattoo we'd somehow never noticed before).

Each star wore the dress her way -- but do the mega sleeves overpower them both?

Which TV star is prettier in pink? Kelly Ripa stepped out in the fuchsia lantern-sleeve Roksanda llinicic dress to the taping of "The Late Show with David Letterman," on Monday. She accessorized her look with a teased ponytail and red Charlotte Olympia "Masako" silk satin pumps with a blush heel accent. Ginnifer Goodwin donned the same "Margot" wool-crepe dress to the People’s Choice Awards back in January. She completed her outfit with soft side swept curls and black lace Jimmy Choo heels. We think Ginnifer wins this one; her porcelain complexion and mild makeup complement the bold color of the dress, while Kelly’s overly tan skin tone appears almost Barbie-like against the bold pink color. ‘Glee’ Season 4 Adds Kate Hudson & Sarah Jessica Parker

The shining star of Glee is looking to remain just as bright next season by adding the glamorous Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson as the latest A-listers to appear on Fox’s hit musical comedy. Fox is not saying much about what roles the two actresses will be taking on – but Parker let the news slip to Kelly Ripa this morning on Live! that she would be playing a “mentor of sorts.”

No word on whether either will sing – but Hudson has been confirmed for a six-episode arc, with Parker also appearing in a yet-to-be disclosed muti-episode arc. Ripa's been fronting the show with a series of guest hosts since Regis Philbin retired in November 2011, and as she reminisced about working with Reege she let slip that there were some features on "Live!" that he just couldn't get along with.

"Glee" star Chris Colfer joined Kelly Ripa and guest co-host Jimmy Kimmel on "Live with Kelly!" (weekdays on ABC) and discussed his newly-adopted, 22-pound pet cat Brian.

"He's a little bit in denial about his size and thinks he's very very small. So I go home and find him stuck in all kinds of things," Colfer explained. He said he tried to put the cat on a diet, but "he kept breaking into the food."

Colfer has been joking about the cat's hefty size with his Twitter followers. He recently tweeted, "Note to self: Next time you're looking for keys, wallet, or phone, begin with checking under the cat."

'Jimmy Kimmel Live' Coming To Brooklyn

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" will shoot a week of shows in October, the ABC late night host told Kelly Ripa on her morning show Monday.

Kimmel, a Brooklyn native, has never brought his show on the road since its debut in 2003. He is scheduled to do the shows from the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the Fort Greene neighborhood from October 29 - November 2.

The show will also celebrate a new NBA team to the New York City borough. The New Jersey Nets recently relocated to Brooklyn, a move that became high profile partially thanks to co-owner Jay-z's hand in rebranding the team to reflect its new location.

According to a tweet from Kimmel, tickets to the shows will be available here.

"Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," Kimmel's NBC competitor, recently did several shows from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Notably, President Barack Obama appeared as Fallon's guest on the first episode. »
