'Elf' at 10: Jon Favreau Reflects on Buddy's Magical Legacy

24 December 2013 8:10 AM, PST | | See recent Rolling Stone news »

It's hard to remember now, but there was a time before Elf was everywhere – on frequent cable rotation, Broadway, and everyone's DVD shelf of classic Christmas movies. There was a time when Will Ferrell was not a surefire comedy movie star, and when Jon Favreau was the guy from Swingers who had directed some little indie films. But they set out to make a modern holiday classic, one that would rub shoulders with such perennial favorites as Miracle on 34th Street and TV's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – and they succeeded. »

Elf recap: Join the Elfalong movement!

8 December 2013 4:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Channel 4 have cancelled their annual showing of Elf, so Stuart Heritage is organising a mass DVD watch-along instead. Press play on Sunday 8 December at 3pm

"Son of a nutcracker" – Buddy

This Elfalong thing has got a bit out of hand. When I first noticed that Elf was absent from the Channel 4 schedules this year, I was slightly put out. Elf is only a decade old, but Channel 4's Elf Day has already become an institution. For many people, it signals the true start of Christmas.

But while I was slightly put out, everyone else seemed to be genuinely outraged. Elf was their film, and Christmas wasn't going to be Christmas unless there was some sort of communal watch-along. The additional fact that those arch enemies of free fun, Sky Movies, had bought the TV rights – and had completely missed the point by airing it every 20 minutes since »

'The Big Bang Theory's' Jim Parsons talks spanking Mayim Bialik on 'Conan'

5 December 2013 10:51 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Jim Parsons spent a lot of time practicing how to spank co-star Mayim Bialik's bottom for a recent episode of "The Big Bang Theory," and opened up about the experience on "Conan" on Thursday (Dec. 5).

In the episode, Bialik's character sneakily figures out a way to get physical with Parsons' Sheldon: by getting spanked. "She wants physical attention from Sheldon that she's not getting. So she has to loop him into ways to give it to her," Parsons says. "So she behaves badly and his didactic personality is, 'Well, you must be punished.' So he has to spank her."

Parsons reveals that shooting the scene was next to impossible because he kept bursting out laughing. "She was bent over me on this couch, take after take, being whooped. Yeah," Parsons says. "It was several takes in before you realize, 'Oh, she's a person.'"

'Mom's' Anna Faris: 'I had a Barbie whorehouse' with murder mysteries as a child

23 October 2013 8:26 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

"Mom" star Anna Faris stopped by "Conan" Wednesday night (Oct. 23), where she talked about

her Barbie Dream House growing up -- it was not a house of dreams, it was a house of ill repute.

"I was fascinated with murder as a child. ... I would create Barbie murder mysteries. One Barbie would die and the rest of the Barbies had to figure out who the murderer was," says Faris. "It was usually Peaches 'n Cream. She's like a Southern Belle Barbie. You gotta keep your eye on ol' Peaches. She'll kill ya."

"My mom doesn't know this, so please don't tell her," Faris continues. "There was a weird sexual component to it. Yeah, ol' Peaches. I had like a ... Barbie whore house?"

"You can still find those on eBay," cracks Andy Richter. »

10 Scenes We Love From ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby’

29 September 2013 10:00 AM, PDT | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

With Rush out in theaters, we wanted to revisit another racing classic of two bitter rivals whose competition drove them to not only be better drivers but also better people. That’s right, we are talking about Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which sees the title character (Will Ferrell) face many obstacles on his quest to prove he is the best race car driver in Nascar all while being pitted against his polar opposite, French driver Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Coehn). Where Ricky is sponsored by Wonder Bread, Jean is sponsored by Perrier. Ricky is married to “stone cold fox” Carley (Leslie Bibb) while Jean is married to world-class German Shepherd trainer Gregory (Andy Richter). But the major difference between these two drivers is Ricky truly loves to race whereas Jean is starting to find himself drawn to other pursuits — you know, things like training Komodo dragons in Sri Lanka and teaching them to perform »

"I'm writing to you because I have been holed up in my apartment for two days and nights watching all seasons of your show. I am in love with it all."

Best Of The Word | Blackout | Copper | Think Talk | What Remains

TV: Best Of The Word

While The Tube, which receives a retrospective this Friday, was hugely influential in its own right, it was the show that followed it that left the larger cultural footprint – not only through its championing of soon-to-be musical heavyweights (Oasis, Nirvana, though probably not L7) but also in its "I'll do anything to be on TV" segment The Hopefuls, which managed to predict just about every reality series trend of the past 15 years. Best Of The Word collates the most memorable moments. Warning: contains liberal servings of Terry Christian.

TV: Blackout

Posing a hypothetical "What if" question – with the sole purpose of terrifying us with the answer – Blackout deftly splices Blair Witchy cameraphone drama, magpied CCTV footage of actual events and splashes of special effects to give a terrific if uncomfortable insight into what might »
