Why The Mask comic books deserve another movie adaptation

27 September 2015 9:52 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Jim Carrey scored a huge hit with The Mask, yet the comic books leave the door open for more films. Here's why they could work...

In some ways, 1994's The Mask was ahead of its time. Sure, when we try to pick out the greatest comic-book adaptations today, we're spoilt for choice: with Marvel entering the third phase of their cinematic universe, transforming formerly obscure characters into mainstream icons, and DC's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice ready to kick their movies up into a higher gear, the list of adaptations looks set to grow and grow.

Still, movies based on comic books remain largely superhero-centric, which is a shame considering the huge range of fantastic titles out there deserving of a larger audience. Michael Davis: We Were Friends

9 September 2015 2:00 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Dwayne McDuffie and I were friends, good friends.

When he first came to La from New York, I was the one who drove him around for weeks. He didn’t drive. Who does in New York? I took him shopping to the barbershop, comic book stores, wherever. If he needed to go somewhere, I was his ride.

His first Christmas in California, Dwayne was my date for director Bill Duke’s Christmas party. He and Bill became the center of the evening engaging in a conversation so riveting everyone – everyone – who went into Bill’s huge ass kitchen stayed and listened. In the African American community the kitchen is always the center of a holiday dinner, regardless if you live in a small apartment or a mansion.

This was something else beyond the holiday tradition. Dwayne and Bill were engaged in conversation that made black Hollywood stop put down the chicken and listen. »

Directed by Peter Hyams

U.S.A., 1994

In 1994, on the day Washington police detective Max Walker (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is about to accept a new position as member of a secretive police squad that will employ time travel in order to stop criminals that have already set foot in the past to commit various illegal activities, his wife Melissa (Mia Sara) is brutally murdered by unknown thugs.
