The story goes that before Jimi Hendrix electrified audiences with his game-changing approach to rock 'n roll and blues, coupled with his flamboyant, jaw-dropping guitar technique, he was just another musician trying to pay the bills on the R&B circuit. Until one day, he was spotted by Linda Keith—girlfriend of someone you might have heard of named Keith Richards—at the Cheetah Club in New York, and putting Hendrix in touch with the right people, he was quickly launched to superstardom. And it's a good story, with a rise-to-fame narrative, famous faces and presumably, memorable songs. Yet, somehow, in Oscar winning "12 Years Slave" scribe John Ridley's film "All Is By My Side," which he wrote and directed, we get very little understanding of the artistry and ambition that would see one among a number of guitarists hustling for a dollar, become one of the most influential rock »

For a movie about rock 'n roll royalty, there hasn't been much noise about the Jimi Hendrix biopic "All Is By My Side." Not only does the movie feature Andre 3000 (aka Andre Benjamin) playing the legendary axeman, it was written by Oscar-winning "12 Years A Slave" scribe John Ridley, who directs as well (it's his sophomore feature effort; his first is the little-seen 1997 film "Cold Around The Heart"). And yet, despite all that and a Tiff premiere last fall, we haven't heard much about it. But perhaps a showing at SXSW will change that. A new clip from the movie has landed online, giving folks a first taste of Andre 3000 as Hendrix, in this scene opposite Imogen Poots, playing model and muse Linda Keith, onetime girlfriend of Keith Richards, who inspired songs from both men. The movie's existence doesn't make the Hendrix estate happy, but it steers clear of legal trouble »

Filmmakers have been trying to bring Jimi Hendrix’s life to the big screen for decades, and with Jimi: All is By My Side, John Ridley has finally succeeded where directors Paul Greengrass and the Hughes brothers had been stymied in recent years. The Oscar-winning screenwriter of 12 Years a Slave brought the iconic rock star, who died in 1970 at the age of 27, back to life with the help of André Benjamin. The movie didn’t have the support of the Hendrix estate so it makes do without his music, but critics nevertheless applauded when the biopic debuted at last fall’s Toronto Film Festival. »

File this one under "casual cannibalism," kids, as we have just come one step closer to Soylent Green as meat maker Bite Labs has found a way to combine celebrity tissue samples and animal products to create some fine salamis. Yep, didn't think I'd be writing about this today. Or even this year.
From the Bite Labs website:
"We start with top-quality ingredients and time-honored recipes for the creation of fine cured meats. We mix celebrity and animal meats, grown inhouse through a proprietary culturing process, into curated salami blends. Starting with biopsied myoblast cells, we grow our healthy, rich meats in Bite Labs’ own bioreactors. Our process yields high-quality, luxury protein, in a sustainable manner that eliminates the environmental and ethical concerns associated with traditional livestock production.”
Yep... we're all doomed. Enjoy the ride while it lasts. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go check if they have »

No good movie is just one thing. They are hybrids, blending styles and genres. And this year's Best Picture Oscar nominees are no different. They mix rom-com with sci-fi, sci-fi with suspense, suspense with geopolitical drama. It can be helpful to break all the films down into pie charts to illustrate these discrete components. How much of The Wolf of Wall Street was Keith Richards's 1970s diet tips and how much was a Girls Gone Wild movie? Or how much of Gravity was a mushrooms-aided planetarium trip and how much was it like when your dad puts the dog on the phone? How much of Captain Phillips was just dad sweat? Find out this, and more, below. »
