BBC orders full series of Motherland and Porridge reboot

Louisa Mellor Oct 6, 2016

Brilliant! The BBC has ordered a full series of new comedy Motherland, and of its rebooted Porridge starring Kevin Bishop...

Two new comedies are coming to the BBC: Motherland, written by the winning combination of Graham Linehan, Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh and Helen Linehan, and a rebooted version of Porridge, from original creators Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais

Both part of the BBC's recent Landmark Sitcom season, the pilot for Motherland took an acerbic look at modern middle-class parenting. Starring Anna Maxwell Martin--an absolute treat to see in a comedic role--as harassed working mother of two Julia, it showed her dealings with playground queen bee Amanda (Lucy Punch), chaotic social outcast Liz (Diane Morgan) and eager-to-please stay at home dad Kevin (Paul Ready).

Sharp, well-observed and caustic about the smug, competitive cliques that form in the world of play dates and PTA committees, it was

AMC Anthology Series The Terror Sets Jared Harris As Lead, Three More Climb Aboard

Jared Harris, star of Mad Men and Netflix period drama The Crown, has climbed aboard AMC’s upcoming anthology series The Terror, one based on Dan Simmons’s best-selling novel of the same name.

Production on the network’s straight-to-series property is expected to get underway in Budapest come winter, when Ciaran Hinds, Utopia star Paul Ready and Adam Nagaitis will round out the preliminary cast.

Rooted in 1847, The Terror can be seen as an old-timey spin on your classic creature feature, thrusting a Royal Naval expedition crew into peril as they plot course for the Northwest Passage. On their journey, a mysterious predator slithers on board, stalking everyone on the ship and picking off crew members one by one. Imagine The Thing, only here we find our band of heroes isolated on the high seas as opposed to the bitter-cold plains of Antarctic.

Confronting that monster head on is Jared Harris,

The Circuit pilot review

Louisa Mellor Aug 25, 2016

Pulling writers Sharon Horgan and Dennis Kelly are back with a wry, understated comedy pilot about middle-class awkwardness…

Adeel Akhtar and Paul Ready’s most famous scene in Dennis Kelly’s conspiracy thriller Utopia saw the latter gouge out the former’s eye with a spoon. The Circuit, written by Dennis Kelly and Sharon Horgan, reunites the pair for more torture involving cutlery. And placemats. And Le Creuset saucepans. And giant prawns of unspecified variety.

The Circuit is a character comedy set against the peculiar middle-class agony of the dinner party. If Channel 4 orders a series, each episode will presumably take place in the home of a new host Come Dine With Me-style. If you can picture Come Dine With Me populated by the cast of Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?

It says something about a comedy’s world outlook that its sanest, most
