The Fate Of The Furious Stunt Breakdown Draws The Line Between CGI And Reality

When you compare the relatively grounded and taut nature of The Fast and the FuriousPoint Break with cars, as one comparison so aptly put – with the recently-released sequel The Fate of the Furious, you’ll begin to get a sense of just how far Universal’s franchise has come, both in terms of death-defying stunts and box office success.

The actioner formerly known as Fast 8 has been crowned king of the international box office, and with a worldwide haul of $900 million and climbing, it’ll be some time yet before F. Gary Gray’s over-the-top sequel begins to run out of gas. It’s no wonder the Powers That Be are already beginning to make headway on a spinoff movie, one that’ll seemingly be headlined by The Rock and The Stath – that’s Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, of course. Will said offshoot find room in its ranks for the menacing Cipher?

Top 5: Heist Movies

With both The Hatton Garden Job in UK cinemas now, and We Still Steal the Old Way available on DVD from today, I thought i’d take a look at my favourite Top Five Heist/Crime Caper Movies… In order (for a change) they are:

5) In Security

In Security tells the story of best friends Kevin and Bruce, who are co-owners of a failing home security company in a town with no crime. As a last ditch effort to drum up some business, they start robbing the neighbors to instill fear and create a need for their services but bullets fly when they unwittingly rob the wrong guy – a suburban drug lord with a penchant for kitchen gadgets.

It’s fair to say I love a good goofball crime caper, but In Security however has much more than being just a “crime caper” going for it. For one it stars one of my favourite actors,

‘The Fate of the Furious’: Inside the Spectacular New York Zombie Car Chase

‘The Fate of the Furious’: Inside the Spectacular New York Zombie Car Chase
The “Fast” franchise is all about cars and family, and cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron) destroys both in the spectacular New York car chase in “The Fate of the Furious,” when she forces Dom (Vin Diesel) to go rogue and betray his family.

Director F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton,” “The Italian Job”) turns the notion of fast cars against the Furious in the New York sequence. Cold-as-ice Cipher hacks hundreds of self-driving “zombie” vehicles and creates a Times Square demolition derby in order to stop an impenetrable limo with the suitcase she is chasing.

Meanwhile, Cipher manipulates Dom into apprehending the suitcase, as his gang is powerless to stop him. The chase, therefore, contains a two-part narrative that underscores Cipher’s power and Dom’s street-racing prowess.

The dirty little secret: All of the car crashing occurred in Cleveland and only the tie-ins were filmed in Manhattan and on the Brooklyn Bridge.

From the set of 'Monster Trucks' - Blending 'E.T.' with 'Fast and the Furious'
Some movies move quickly from principal photography to finished product. Some…do not. Monster Trucks was one of the latter. Two summers ago I found myself in Vancouver on a set for a kid’s film about monsters that take over trucks with several other journalists. We were shown around, interviewed some of the talent and the crew, and generally did set visit things. Then Monster Trucks disappeared into the abyss, only to resurface today with a trailer. Can you recall in great detail what you were doing in June two years ago? Ha ha! Me neither! Luckily, past me was kind enough to leave notes. But those notes look like the half-mad ravings of a toddler. So this will be an adventure for all of us! Monster Trucks is a bit of a modern-day E.T. The story focuses on a clever monster who finds itself alone in a new environment.

Varun Dhawan in David Dhawan Sajid Nadiadwalas Judwaa 2

Varun Dhawan in David Dhawan Sajid Nadiadwalas Judwaa 2
Almost two decades ago, the rib tickling comedy of Salman Khan's dual role had created waves and now yet again a hero in double role is all set to entertain the audience in Judwaa 2. Varun Dhawan has been signed to play the lead in the sequel to Judwaa, which will once again be directed by his father David Dhawan. While the father son duo has previously worked for the masala potboiler Main Tera Hero, the two of them are now a part of a comedy film once again. We also hear that this time around the filmmakers are making it into a much bigger venture by even roping in a Hollywood studio for the sequel. The second installment of Judwaa will apparently also have Spiro Razatos as the action coordinator as well as a popular director of photography from abroad. The film is also said to have a lot

SXSW Film Review: ‘Furious 7′

SXSW Film Review: ‘Furious 7′
A new director at the helm and the sudden death of leading man Paul Walker might have spelled doom for the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, but rather like one of its own seemingly indestructible muscle cars, “Furious 7” has emerged miraculously unscathed. In taking over for longtime director Justin Lin (parts 3-6), horror auteur James Wan (“The Conjuring”) ably steps up to the big-action plate, orchestrating two-plus-hours of increasingly outlandish vehicular (and aerobatic) mayhem that revs pulses and engines in roughly equal measure. Completed under what were surely challenging circumstances, but (mostly) seamless to behold, “Furious 7” provides both a satisfying chapter in the movies’ preeminent gearhead soap opera and a tactful, touching memorial to Walker, whose final screen appearance will help ensure that this already $2.3 billion series is seven times lucky at the worldwide box office.

When Walker died in a high-speed car crash in November 2013, he was

The Dusty VHS Corner: Pm Entertainment

In the latest edition of The Dusty VHS Corner, Tom Jolliffe digs out a trio of actioners from Pm Entertainment…

Between 1989 and 2002, Pm Entertainment was a strong force in the straight to video action arena. Founded by directors Joseph Merhi and Richard Pepin, they set about trying to deliver big thrills on low budgets. At some stages, largely during a peak period in the mid-90’s, they managed to do that.

Certain stars would become synonymous with the company, and they largely worked with the same ethos as other bigger companies and action specialists, in that you need to have a name attached to sell your picture. Pm worked, sometimes repeatedly, with a slew of video action stars such as Gary Daniels, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Cynthia Rothrock, Jack Scalia and Jeff Wincott.

Pm Entertainment would also work largely out of La. Whilst other rival companies decided Canada or Eastern

The Academy Invites 271 New Members for 2014

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o among 271 Academy invitees
Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Josh Hutcherson, Lupita Nyong'o, Pharrell and 268 others invited to join the Academy
Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Sanjay Gupta ropes in Hollywood action director for Jazbaa
A while back we had reported that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, contrary to reports of her making her comeback with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film, would in fact first be seen in Sanjay Gupta's next titled Jazbaa. Soon after, Aishwarya confirmed the development while making a statement at the Cannes Film Festival. Now we hear that Gupta has roped in known Hollywood action director Spiro Razatos to helm the action sequences in the film. Spiro, who is best known for his work on films like Back to the Future (1985), Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and the more recently Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) , will be in the city for the film. Interestingly while Spiro has previously worked on Bollywood ventures like Kaante and My Name is Khan, this will be the first time that the action director will be in India for a shoot. Movie Review: Winter Soldier Is Second Best of the Marvel Films

Captain America: The Winter Soldier’: The second best of the Marvel films (photo: Chris Evans in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’) With each new Marvel superhero film that bullies its way into multiplexes, the magnitude of the company’s achievement gets more impressive, if not historic. Focusing just on the Marvel characters controlled by Disney (as opposed to Sony’s lockup of Spider-Man and Fox’s oversight of X-Men), they’ve launched three successful individual franchises (Thor, Iron Man and Captain America) and another franchise combining all the separate characters, the first of which became the third highest-grossing film of all time (The Avengers). Each movie contains characters or story threads that feed the other movies, creating what amounts to a visually and monetarily profligate series of old-school comic book crossover issues. The industry has never seen anything quite like it and the biggest surprise is that, by varying degrees,

Set Visit: The Russo Brothers bring gritty action to 'Captain America 2'
"Community" and "Arrested Development" may seem like a far cry from the souped-up blockbuster action of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for the sibling directing team of Mark and Anthony Russo, there's less of a difference that you might think. The duo -- best known for directing and producing those aforementioned TV comedies -- called the shots on the upcoming "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." The Russos discussed the Marvel sequel on a visit to the film's L.A. set last fall, where they were directing a piece of a big action scene featuring Cap (Chris Evans) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie). As comic book fans themselves, getting the call from Marvel exec Kevin Feige was a dream come true. "Winter Soldier" departs from 2011's "Captain America" The First Avenger" in several significant ways, especially its darker tone, inspired by '70s political thrillers. After directing the George Clooney indie comedy

Blu-ray Review: Maniac Cop 3: Badge Of Silence

Blue Underground brings the wrong arm of the law’s final installment, Maniac Cop 3: Badge Of Silence, to an Unrated Collector’s Edition Blu-ray!

Film:

Seemingly picking up moments after the fiery end that concluded with the burial of officer Matt Cordell in Maniac Cop 2, it seems the streets are once again safe from his ruthless brand of justice. His six feet slumber is short lived once voodoo priest Houngan (Julius Harris, Black Caesar) resurrects him after spirited cop Kate Sullivan (Gretchen Baker, Ed Wood) is gunned down and framed by a druggie (Jackie Earle Haley, Watchmen) and a scorned news camera crew. Seeking retribution for the now coma induced Sullivan, Cordell lays waste to those that wronged her, while forming an insidious plan involving an unholy matrimony. Recognizing Cordell’s murderous m.o., Lieutenant McKinney (Robert Davi, Maniac Cop 2) teams with Dr. Fowler (Caitlin Dulany, Class Of 1999 II: The Substitute

Blu-ray Review: Maniac Cop 2

Blue Underground resurrects Matt Cordell from his home video graveyard with a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of William Lustig’s balls-out insane, 80′s action-horror sequel, Maniac Cop 2!

Recounting the original film’s impaling finale (featuring one of the greatest stunts in cinema history), Maniac Cop 2 slices open with a very eerie opening credits crawl in a steel cold junkyard. As the camera slowly makes its way around the car cemetery, a shadowy patrol car roars to life amongst the heap; Matt Cordell (once again played by iron jaw Robert Z’Dar) – the Maniac Cop – has once again returned to stalk the streets of New York. Seeking revenge against officers Forrest (Bruce Campbell, The Evil Dead) and Mallory (Laurene Landon, It’s Alive III: Island of the Alive) for sending him to a watery grave, Cordell quickly (and surprisingly) dispatches the cult stars in gruesome fashion.

Now believing
