In 1961, he starred in the pilot for a proposed CBS TV sitcom called "The Rock" about a professional athlete who also wrote articles for a prominent sports magazine. The series was never developed.
In 1962, he co-starred with
Ann B. Davis in an unsold pilot for a proposed comedy series called "R.B. and Myrnalene". The plot revolved about two lonely people who meet in a boarding house.
In 1965, he co-starred in an unsold pilot for a proposed NBC sitcom called "Steptoe and Son", which was based on the British TV series of the same name (
"Steptoe and Son" (1962)). The pilot never sold, but the concept, as reworked by
Norman Lear and
Bud Yorkin, became
"Sanford and Son" (1972).
