In 1961, he starred in the pilot for a proposed CBS TV sitcom called "The Rock" about a professional athlete who also wrote articles for a prominent sports magazine. The series was never developed.

In 1962, he co-starred with Ann B. Davis in an unsold pilot for a proposed comedy series called "R.B. and Myrnalene". The plot revolved about two lonely people who meet in a boarding house.

In 1965, he co-starred in an unsold pilot for a proposed NBC sitcom called "Steptoe and Son", which was based on the British TV series of the same name ("Steptoe and Son" (1962)). The pilot never sold, but the concept, as reworked by Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin, became "Sanford and Son" (1972).
