Dark Summer and Alien Outpost Hitting DVD/Bluray This July Via Scream Factory/IFC Midnight

15 May 2015 1:01 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

The partnership between genre favorites Scream Factory and IFC Midnight has definitely been a good one, with the team-up doing quite an excellent job putting out some pretty entertaining films, with everything from Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook to The Vicious BrothersExtraterrestrial all being must have releases for horror fans.  Adding even more solid titles to their partnership roster, Sf & IFC have now announced the July 7th DVD/Bluray release date for both Paul Solet’s Dark Summer and Jabbar Raisani’s Very solid film Alien Outpost. It’s been a while since Solet’s last film (the extremely effective and original 2009 motherly tale, Grace), so Dark Summer hitting shelves is some excellent news, and Alien Outpost is yet another very well done take on both the found footage-like subgenre and alien invasion flicks.

‘Mankind’s Last Stand’ Review

19 April 2015 6:11 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Adrian Paul, Brandon Auret, Reiley McClendon, Rick Ravanello, Douglas Tait, Joe Reegan, Nic Rasenti, Andy Davoli, Matthew Holmes, Sven Ruygrok, Scott E. Miller, Kenneth Fok, Darron Meyer | Written by Jabbar Raisani, Blake Clifton | Directed by Jabbar Raisani

Jabbar Raisani, a former visual effects maestro, who here turns director – makes his feature debut with a film that mixes a myriad of stereotypes and cliches of the alien invasion genre with the modern war movie (there’s a very good reason the film is described as Independence Day meets Black Hawk Down) in a faux-documentary that sees a camera crew join an elite unit of soldiers at Outpost 37, the most hostile region of what remains of our planet, as they face one of their greatest battles against the “Heavies” alien intruders who, a decade earlier, had invaded Earth with the intention of total annihilation.

Lookin’ at the cover art for Dark Haul, my heart filled with the same sort of dread that one may have if they were informed that their great grandfather was actually Adolf Hitler. I mean, an overly ‘shopped image of what appears to be a Red Arremer from Ghosts N’ Goblins hitchin’ a ride on the Pork Chop Express as it blasts forth from some orange and brown apocalypse? Usually an image like this appears on releases from SyFy… »

Alien Outpost Review

26 January 2015 6:00 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

If you thought 2015 would bring an end to horror’s found footage obsession, you’re a silly, optimistic soul who doesn’t understand what makes these films perfect studio fodder. Alien Outpost isn’t even the first found footage film I’ve seen this January, but thankfully it’s leaps and bounds ahead of the competition – only by comparison. Writer/Director Jabbar Raisani goes about reinvigorating one of my least favorite horror genres – alien invasions – and actually makes the extraterrestrial assault more enticing than it probably should be thanks to a video-game-like intensity favoring run-and-gun shooters. Raisani might have developed his special effects skills beheading noble types throughout Game Of Thrones, but the budding talent shows an eye for visual grandeur and succinct delivery in his future-blasting directorial debut.

Raisani’s vision takes us to a post-war-torn Earth after alien forces attempted to invade. Even though the battle is fierce and costly, »
