‘Stranger Things’: An Unscripted Kiss Proves the Need for Underage Actors to Be Treated as Equals
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 2 of “Stranger Things.”]

For its second season, the Netflix original “Stranger Things” offered fans a chance to get even closer to the hit series, chasing each episode with a new aftershow tantalizing entitled “Beyond Stranger Things,” which delivered episode recaps and exclusive insights, all care of some very special guests. While the choice to beef up and build out the mythology of its beloved original series was a bit of a no-brainer, a new episode of the show has drawn ire from some of the show’s own devotees, an uproar that has highlighted the continued need for young actors — like the biggest stars of the series — to be treated with professional respect and equality, even (and especially) in an environment that seems to so happily play up its sense of fun.

In the second episode of “Beyond Stranger Things,” host Jim Rash is joined by creators Matt and Ross Duffer, director Shawn Levy,

Sliff 2017 Review- Bernard And Huey

Bernard And Huey screens as part of the 26th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival on Sunday, November 5 at 6 Pm at landmark’s Tivoli Theatre. For ticket information click Here

Here’s a rarity. It’s a live-action feature film based on a comic that doesn’t involve brawny men in armored tights wailing on each other (and taking out entire city blocks). That’s because it’s based on a newspaper/magazine comic panel (like “The Far Side”) rather than those brightly colored page-turners from Marvel and DC. This is the brainchild of celebrated cartoonist Jules Feiffer, and uses recurring characters from the pages of the Village Voice and Playboy, spanning thirty years. When we first meet Bernard And Huey, they’re in their early twenties, always on the make (or in their language “looking to make out”). Bespectacled, nebbishy Bernard is bemoaning his last lady, while brunt,

Oscars Not So White: ‘Get Out’ and ‘Mudbound’ Lead Diverse 2018 Contenders

It would be lovely to think that last year’s “Moonlight” Oscar wins presaged a long and permanent shift in Hollywood movie culture. At the heart of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ complex diversity issue is how much the Oscars reflect the way that the Academy likes to view itself. That helps to explain why the Academy voters did far better with their 2017 Oscar nominations than the year before, when their 6,000 members failed to nominate any actors of color at all.

The Academy’s recent diversity push added more younger and international members; its 7,000 voters are now 28 percent women and 13 percent people of color. But will the new membership shifts make a major impact on the 2018 Oscar nominations? Despite the new voters, the organization is still under the
