'Dazed and Confused' (1993) - Best Movies #4

'Jersey Boys' stars marvel at Clint Eastwood's advice and their chance at big screen stardom

New York - It goes without saying that Broadway actors are rarely able to reprise their roles in the movie versions of stage musicals they've starred in.  For every Anthony Rapp in "Rent," Rita Moreno in "West Side Story" or Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in "The Producers" there are countless other films that didn't even consider actors who played the same role on the stage.  Usually it's just too risky for Hollywood execs to fund a musical without some old fashioned movie starpower on board (it's still considered a risky proposition).   Don't tell that to Clint Eastwood, however. The Academy Award-winning director of "Million Dollar Baby" and "Unforgiven" did the unthinkable with his movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning smash "Jersey Boys": he cast actors who'd previously played their roles in the stage musical in the movie. Well, three out of the four leads, at least.  "Jersey" features John Lloyd Young, »

On the Scene: Drama League honors Neil Patrick Harris at annual gala

4 February 2014 11:57 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It was a star-studded night at Manhattan’s Pierre Hotel as over 150 artists — including stars Tim Gunn, Stephen Colbert, and Audra McDonald (and yes, even some Muppets) — came out to celebrate stage and screen star Neil Patrick Harris at the Drama League’s 30th annual all-star gala.

It’s no secret that Harris — who will soon be back on stage starring in a new version of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which opens April 14 — has garnered quite an admiration from the communities he’s been involved in. But there was no question Monday night that Harris is admired for more than just his talent. »
