Late Night With the Devil, the latest film from Cameron and Colin Cairnes, the team who made 100 Bloody Acres and Scare Campaign, opens with scenes of violence caught in the lens of the TV camera. As we watch, Michael Ironside tells us about America in the 1970s, and then segues into the career of radio man turned late night TV host Jack Delroy.
His show, the syndicated Night Owls, has run a close second to Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show, but never managed to catch up to it in the ratings wars. And since the death of Jack’s wife Madeline his life and his ratings, seem to be in free fall. With sweeps week kicking off on Halloween Eve and his career on the line,...

Two questions linger over the new ABC News Studios/Hulu limited docuseries Demons & Saviors. Did Christina Boyer possess some kind of telekinetic power? And, more pertinently, did she murder her three-year-old daughter, a crime for which she has been incarcerated in Georgia since 1992? Demons & Saviors does its best to merge these two stories, largely by suggesting Boyer’s sensationalist labeling as “the poltergeist girl” helped a small-town Georgia legal system railroad her behind bars. The end result sometimes feels like two different documentaries, but the impact is still considerable,...

From Harry Houdini to David Blaine, magicians have never ceased to hold audiences enraptured, turn the impossible into possible and spark the pervading question: “How did they do that?” The latter—however—is not solely a part of spectator speculation after a performance. A magician like the late James Randi utilized his craft to demonstrate how charlatans such as Uri Geller, Peter Popoff, and James Hydrick successfully duped individuals into believing they possessed psychic powers.

It’s easy to say that skeptics are not favored by a lot of people, especially those that want to cling to their faith and those that want to think that they have a good handle on the world around them. But The Amazing Randi, aka James Randi, didn’t really care about that, and for good reason, since he was out to help people and keep them from being taken in by charlatans and those that openly prey upon people by using their faith to take advantage of them in various ways. The author/conjurer/skeptic passed away recently at the age of

James Randi, a magician whose many TV appearances led him to a second career as a respected paranormal investigator, has died at 92. The James Randi Foundation confirmed his death in a tweet on Tuesday, saying he died of “age-related causes.”
Born Randall James Zwinge in 1928, he entered show business as a teenager, touring with a carnival and working nightclubs in his native Toronto, Canada. Initially billed as The Great Randall: Telepath, he parlayed that name into a mind-reading act and a knack for predicting the future.
Unlike many magicians and performers, Randi was not averse to letting fans know that he was a trickster, relying on subterfuge and slight of hand to pull off his tricks. As his career grew, adding escape artist to his bag of stunts, he grew increasingly worried about the people who refused to embrace the fact that it was all an act.

Chicago – Magician James Randi, or “The Amazing Randi,” has a made a legacy in using his love of magic to show audiences how they’re being tricked by evangelists, spoon-benders, psychics, etc. A ruthlessly charming Houdini-wannabe with instant showman charisma, he exists as the humbling gravity to a world that can convince itself that unattainable answers are to be found in ideas beyond science.
When someone claims that they’re able to talk to spirits from over 35,000 years ago, or can push a pen with extreme focus and the wave of their hand, Randi shows up at the scene, and throws down with logic at his side. It often happens on the stage of talk shows, whether it’s Johnny Carson or Larry King, and it’s glorious. He never loses. In a world where a sucker is indeed born every minute, he’s a hero as much as he is a necessity.

Legendary director and producer Barry Sonnenfeld – whose body of work includes The Addams Family films, Get Shorty, and the Men In Black franchise – has set his sights on making a feature film about Project Alpha. The elaborate hoax perpetrated by James Randi over thirty years ago is the focus of the feature length documentary, An Honest Liar, which numbers Sonnenfeld among its executive producers. The factual movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and now, the director has seen the potential for further storytelling.
“I sought out Justin and Tyler immediately after I watched An Honest Liar at Telluride Mountainfilm,” he said. “Not only did I love An Honest Liar, but I knew there was an excellent narrative film to be made out of this story, with James Randi playing the ‘behind the curtain’ puppeteer.”

Filmmaker Neill Blomkamp had his film win the opening weekend box office for the third time in his career, as Chappie finished in the top spot with $13.3 million. The victory, however, is bittersweet, as the total is a marked decrease from Blomkamp’s prior features, as Elysium opened with nearly $30 million on its first weekend, and District 9 took in over $37 million. Chappie star Dev Patel, however, made two appearances in the top three, as The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which sees him starring alongside the likes of Dame Judi Dench and Richard Gere, finished in third place with $8.6 million.
The other new entry in the top ten was Unfinished Business, as the Vince Vaughn-starring vehicle came in at tenth place with a total of $4.8 million. The total marks one of the lowest opening weekend grosses of Vaughn’s career, and marks a continuing downward trend in the performer’s box office success.

Randall James Hamilton Zwinge left home at the age of 17 to join a circus. He started his career as an escape artist and went on to become a stage-magician popularly known as “The Amazing Randy”. In his late fifties,he suffered a vertebral fracture and had to retire from stage. Since then he has made it his life’s mission to expose the likes of psychics, God-men and mystics. He has also authored various books which challenge the claims of theparanormal. These days he is better known as James Randi- the scientific skeptic.
At the center of the film’s narrative is a dichotomy of lies. Is there such a thing as honest lies and dishonest lies? Are some lies justified but not the others?
It is this master- showman that An Honest Liar profiles. Randi has been in the limelight and appeared on many TV shows over his career.

And Tribeca Film Festival 2014 is a wrap! While we put together our interview footage and write up some full reviews, let's dive back into our mini reviews so you'll know what movies to watch for as they nab distribution.
Preservation - directed by Christopher Denham (USA)
A disgruntled vet, his work-obsessed brother and his somewhat timid wife trek into an off limits nature preserve to live off the land, hunt with their dog... and fight for their lives!! And that's pretty much the whole plot.
The film takes a great deal of time at the front end setting up every little thing that unfolds in the back end but fails to flesh out likable characters you'll not want to see killed or present villains that elicit any emotion from the viewer whatsoever. Offering nothing new to a sub-genre that has plenty of titles to choose from, Preservation should be left out to rot.

Celebrity psychic Sylvia Browne is doing damage control over a prediction made nearly 10 years ago claiming Ohio kidnapping victim Amanda Berry was dead, but her actions may represent a watershed moment in how Americans view psychics.
"The [Ariel Castro abduction] is a test case for all psychics," said Joe Nickell, editor of Skeptical Inquirer, a magazine that encourages science-based analysis of paranormal and fringe-science claims. "Why didn't one psychic wake up in the middle of the night and know where they were?"
Browne told Louwana Miller, the mother of Amanda Berry, on "The Montel Williams Show" in 2004: "She’s not alive, honey. Your daughter’s not the kind who wouldn’t call," The Atlantic Wire reported. Berry was kidnapped 10 years ago and was found alive on Monday.
Browne responded with an official statement to The Huffington Post earlier this week that included this line: "Only God is right all the time."

The future of reality TV could be kids who think they've had past lives.
A Los Angeles production company is currently holding a nationwide casting call for children who claim to have, or have had, past life memories for a new reality series, "Ghost Inside My Child," scheduled to air on the Bio Channel later this year.
A pilot episode of the series aired a few months ago, with three kids who had gone through various steps of recovering memories of their alleged past lives.

After a quick briefing from Rick Gomes, the Communications Director at Travel Channel, the Gac got right to work.
Zak Bagans: Hey everybody! I'm just going to talk real quick about some of these upcoming episodes, Point Sur Lighthouse, the Sedamsville Rectory, the Palmer House. The Point Sur Lighthouse was really awesome, it was just south of Monterrey in California and there was about eight different buildings perched upon this rock that looked like Dracula's castle - it was insane.
And there was about two dozen shipwrecks right there on those rocks and about half of those saw mass tragedies. And this is one of the...

Real-life parapsychologist Chris French gives his verdict on the newly released film Red Lights starring Robert De Niro
In my role as a professional sceptic, I jumped at the chance to see a preview of Red Lights, the new film starring Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver that goes on general release in the UK on Friday.
De Niro plays Simon Silver, a blind psychic who has resurfaced after many years in obscurity following a period of celebrity some three decades earlier, which ended with the mysterious death of his most vocal critic. Weaver plays a psychologist, Margaret Matheson, who long ago moved from scepticism to cynicism about the paranormal, having encountered nothing but fakery throughout her many years of investigation. Her loyal assistant, physicist Tom Buckley, is played by Cillian Murphy, looking for all the world like Professor Brian Cox's younger brother.
Although much psychic fraud is exposed,...

You need to have a lot of gall or a lot of merit to call yourself "amazing." James Randi has both. In the late 1940s he began performing magic under the name of The Amazing Randi. By the early 1960s, Randi had become a television celebrity, a sort of mid-20th Century version of David Blaine, only not pretentious. What separated him from throngs of other magicians, illusionists and the likes was Randi's refusal to claim that any of his gifts were mystical. His own active skepticism made him a star, his tact essentially being to tell audiences, "Look, what I'm about to do isn't real," and then deliver a trick so meticulously designed that it still impressed the very people he just told he was about to lie to. What makes Randi even more impressive...

[1] Rodrigo Cortés made a name for himself with a film that premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival: Buried, based on Chris Sparling’s black list script about a man buried alive who has to figure a way out of his coffin before his air supply is used up. The film starred Ryan Reynolds, and was critically praised for it’s direction, a tough task considering the 95-minute film takes place completely inside a casket. Cortés returns to Sundance two years later with the $15 million thriller Red Lights, which he also wrote. The story follows Psychologist Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her assistant Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) as they study and disprove paranormal activity, parascience and psychics. But can they take down world-renowned psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro), who has come out of retirement after three decades? This is a 21st century Ghostbusters. What if Venkman, Stantz and Spengler never...

When you think of well-known American psychics, there's a good chance that John Edward or James Van Praagh come to mind. Van Praagh had his own talk show, holds numerous seminars and workshops, has written several books, and even helped create the CBS show, The Ghost Whisperer, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. You also may have heard of The Amazing Randi, a magician and skeptical investigator of paranormal claims. Since 1996, his James Randi Educational Foundation has had a standing offer of $1 million to any individual who can produce evidence of paranormal abilities in a controlled environment. Randi said in a recent interview, "Oh, I have an open mind, but not so open that my brain falls out." The Jref is singling out Van Praagh after a recent appearance on ABC's Primetime Nightline: Beyond Belief. On the show, Van Praagh did his typical rabbity reading on Good [...]...

“Deep Vote,” an Oscar winning screenwriter and a member of the Academy, will write this column — exclusively for ScottFeinberg.com — every week until the Academy Awards in order to help to peel back the curtain on the Oscar voting process. (His identity must be protected in order to spare him from repercussions for disclosing the aforementioned information.)
Thus far, he has shared his thoughts in column 1 about his general preferences; column 2 about “Solitary Man” (Anchor Bay Films, 5/21, R, trailer) and “Winter’s Bone” (Roadside Attractions, 6/11, R, trailer); column 3 about “Alice in Wonderland” (Disney, 3/5, PG, trailer), “Mother and Child” (Sony Pictures Classics, 5/7, R, trailer), and “Toy Story 3” (Disney, 6/18, G, trailer); column 4 about “Get Low” (Sony Pictures Classics, 7/30, PG-13, trailer), “The Kids Are All Right” (Focus Features, 7/9, R, trailer), and “The Social Network” (Columbia, 10/1, PG-13, trailer); column 5 about “127 Hours” (Fox Searchlight, 11/5, R, trailer), “Biutiful” (Roadside Attractions, 12/17, R, trailer), and “Shutter Island” (Paramount,...

I know what you’re thinking: they’re making a sequel to Legend of the Guardians? There. I proved I’m psychic. James Randi owes me a million dollars. The answer, though, is no. They aren’t. Rise of the Guardians is simply a confusingly-titled also-animated also-children’s movie that Dreamworks is prepping for 2012. Apparently the book’s title “The Guardians of Childhood,” was too good for the movie version. Fortunately, the story is a contemporary slant on Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost as a heroic foursome. According to Variety, Alec Baldwin will be voicing Claus, Hugh Jackman will be voicing The Bunny, Isla Fisher will be voicing the Fairy, and Chris Pine will be voicing Jack Frost as played by Captain Kirk. The heroes will be battling the demon Pitch (voiced by Jude Law) in what is most likely a plot to destroy the magic of childhood. I...

Most events called "psychic" do not take place at all, but only seem to. All the events we can perceive take place in a rational universe governed by physical laws. They can be explained by human thinking and do not require a supernatural loophole.
I'm drawn to this thinking by Clint Eastwood's new film, "Hereafter." You may have absorbed the idea that it's about the afterlife. It would be fairer to say it's about the common human need for there to be an afterlife.
When I write that I expect to experience no more after death than I experienced before birth, I receive comments from people who pity me. They wonder how I can possibly live with such a bleak prospect.
I find it more cheerful than most of the other possibilities that have been floated. I don't want to come back as an insect, haunt unquiet places as a ghost,...

James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but he is perhaps best known as the world's most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.
Randi has pursued "psychic" spoonbenders, exposed the dirty tricks of faith healers, investigated homeopathic water "with a memory," and generally been a thorn in the sides of those who try to pull the wool over the public's eyes in the name of the supernatural. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a MacArthur "genius" grant in 1986. He's the author of numerous books, including The Truth About Uri Geller, The Faith Healers, Flim-Flam!, and An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural. Randi also came out earlier this year. In 1996, the James Randi Education Foundation was established to further Randi's work. Randi's long-standing challenge to psychics now stands as a $1,000,000 prize administered by the Foundation.

Morning Meme: A Virus of Hugs. Plus, Coming Out Is No Illusion, but "Glee" On Broadway Was a Fantasy
Ryan Phillipe revisits Billy Douglas, Dr. Horrible to the big screen, and Rosie is back on television.
Nobody disputes James Randi is a smart man. A noted illusionist in his younger days, these days he spends time investigating the paranormal and the pseudoscientific. He’s also, as of yesterday, out at the age of 82. One at a time, in our own time.
I found out about James Randi coming out from Wil Wheaton’s blog. I’m obviously a fan of Evil Wil Wheaton on Big Bang Theory, but I even liked a young Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: Tng. Wil doesn’t do politics often, but this is the second time recently he’s spoken out on the subject of Glbt rights. I’d like to share:
I hope he's right. I hope that, one day, we will live in a more tolerant and enlightened world, where people won...

A personal hero of mine, James "The Amazing" Randi came out in a blog post today. Randi, a former -- well, I don't think he ever really stopped -- magician turned debunker of supernatural shenanigans, took what, for him, seemed to be a big step by publicly discussing his sexual orientation.
Between his post and the linked audio interview with him, Randi sounds a lot like the gay folks I've met over the years who were never that interested in gay issues. Less about being anti-gay, oblivious or fearful, but more of more of simply being interested in other things.
Before he became the leading light of the Skeptical Movement, Randi was fairly famous magician, with radio shows, stage appearances and TV features. He goes to great lengths to state that he never denied his sexual orientation, but he also wasn't the most forward about it, in part because,...
