[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Ozark” Season 1. A spoiler-free review is available here.]

Now that’s how you make a thriller.

Anyone burned by the slow stroll to nowhere of recent Netflix dramas had to be pleased with the pins-and-needles tension — and shocking payoffs — of “Ozark,” Jason Bateman’s new original series for the streaming giant. From the first episode to the ending, Season 1 was filled with shocking twists and intense familial strife.

Below, we’ll break down why the near-constant darkness always felt grounded in reality, using big developments in the plot and key scenes throughout the series to illustrate how a horror story still felt relatable — and all the more terrifying for it.

TV Review: Netflix’s ‘Ozark,’ Starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney

12 July 2017 7:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Playing Michael Bluth was a lot harder than it looked. As the lead of “Arrested Development,” Jason Bateman had to be a despicable straight man with delusions of his own goodness and sympathetic, as the only character capable of feeling pain in a family of narcissists. Bateman rose admirably to the task, providing a grounded contrast for the show’s array of weirdos. But outside of that show’s context, his style has seemed either too funny or not funny enough. “The Switch,” in which Bateman plays a jealous ex-boyfriend who switches out donor sperm with his own modest emission, plays at the razor’s edge of comedy and tragedy — and ineptly uses a montage to escape its own premise, while Bateman’s character challenges the audience to feel empathy for him.

The Overlook Film Festival 2017 Impressions: Immersive Experiences & Special Events

6 May 2017 11:19 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

The Overlook Film Festival is something special. Easily the best genre event I’ve attended, Overlook was created for horror fans by a team whose passion for the genre runs deep. Not only have they scoured the globe for the latest horror movies that fans will get excited for, but they’ve also worked with some of the most creative people in performance art and immersive entertainment to offer attendees one-of-a-kind experiences.

Most film festivals focus heavily on the feature programming side of things for obvious reasons, but The Overlook Film Festival has enough alternative programming that you could spend your entire time focused on it. In fact, I’d say that calling it “alternative programming” does a disservice to what they’ve put together, as their special programming was stronger than the films they screened.

If you want the traditional film festival experience, that is entirely possible. If you »

The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”

The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel. »

In today’s TV News Roundup, ABC adds to the cast of its “Ten Days in the Valley” series, “Law & Order: Svu” pens an episode inspired by last summer’s Fox News sexual harassment scandal, and more.

Episodes

Characters in the “Svu” episode include a “controlling” news network head, a female anchor with a dark secret, and a young up-and-coming reporter willing to do anything to advance her career. The »
