The 'Bend-It' Queen Gurinder Chadha is flying down to Mumbai next week to finalize the cast of her next film tentatively entitled The Viceroy's House. The film will chronicle the last six months of Lord Mountbatten's stay in India when the British Raj ended. Gurinder says she has unearthed an immense amount of hitherto-undisclosed facts about Mountbatten's final days in India. "There are the so-called facts that we grew up reading about Mountbatten's closing months in India. But there are secret documents which I've unearthed. These point to another truth which I'll reveal in my film." Gurinder, whose last feature film a black comedy entitled It's A Wondeful Afterlife was a bit of a letdown, has bought the rights of two very important books to make her Mountbatten film. "My husband Paul (Mayeda Berges) who has co-scripted the film with me and I have bought the rights of »

The event this week to commemorate Ilayaraja's completion of a 1000 movie scores was personally supervised by Amitabh Bachchan. That is how we saw Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, with Sridevi thrown in, on the same platform. Apparently, the two Tamil superstars were hesitant to share the same platform. "Even for Ilayaraja whom both Rajniji and Kamalji revere, they were not willing to come together on the same platform to honour him," says an insider. It was a call to each from Amitabh Bachchan that did the trick. Says the insider, "Bachchan Saab rang up Rajniji and Kamalji and told them how much their presence mattered on that special evening honouring the living legend of Tamil film compositions." Sridevi too received a personal invitation from Amitabh Bachchan. And Gulzar who seldom attends any event, was gently reminded by the Big B of the Sadma connection between Ilaya Sir and Gulzar Saab. »

Stylist Pernia Qureshi, who received much recognition for designing Sonam Kapoor’s look in Aisha, will be seen in Muzaffar Ali’s upcoming period drama Jaanisar, which bears a striking resemblance to his previous movie Umrao Jaan. She is to play a courtesan in the 1870’s pre-Independence drama.
Pernia says that her film will have a lot in common with the 1981 Rekha-Farooque Shaikh starrer, Umrao Jaan, but the intention is not to make a remake or a sequel. “It’s a new film set in a similar milieu,” she adds, “The film is a historic drama revolving around our freedom struggle.” She further elaborates saying that while Rekha’s character in Umrao Jaan Amiran had a quiet and mysterious demeanor, her enchanting character Noor is outspoken and progressive which is quite the opposite of the classic role.
“I am not copying Rekha or Aish,” says Pernia, writing off »

While Tamil stars and films are perhaps not as well known outside of India as their Bollywood counterparts, they nevertheless have a huge fanbase within India (especially the south) and across the diaspora. Also known as Kollywood, the Tamil industry produces hundreds of feature films per year. The latest high-profile title is big-budget adventure/romance thriller I, from Robot helmer Shanmugham Shankar (commonly known as just Shankar). In the U.S., it’s going out via distributor Aascar Film in over 200 theaters with versions in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. No South Indian film has ever opened this wide in the U.S. market before. In India, the opening is on a record 6,500 screens. As with the major Bollywood films we’ve seen over the past year which have »
