Antonio’s shades of grey by Richard Mowe

Antonio Banderas and Michael Radford: 'When you have an actor of the calibre of Antonio you can simply build the part around him' Photo: Richard Mowe Hispanic heart-throb Antonio Banderas, whose reputation in part has been forged on his normally clean-shaven, chiselled Latin looks has undergone something of a transformation for his latest screen incarnation in The Music Of Silence.

The 56-year-old adopts a much more mature look than his years suggest with grey hair and a luxuriant grey beard to play the Maestro who helps the young Andrea Bocelli realise his potential to become the golden voiced tenor known to millions in the film, directed by Michael Radford (of Il Postino and The Merchant Of Venice renown).

‘Crash’ Co-Writer Hired to Pen Script on History of Irish Criminals in New York City

16 May 2017 3:57 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

CuffLink Productions has hired Bobby Moresco, who co-wrote Paul Haggis’s 2004 Oscar winner “Crash,” to pen a script based on the history of Irish criminal dominance in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen. The story revolves around the rise and fall of the “Westies Gang” and the end of a century of violence on New York’s west side.

Ed Cuffe and Tierney Boorboor, of CuffLink Productions, will serve as producers. Michael Reuten and Joseph Isgro (“Hoffa”) are executive producers and Michael Mandaville of the “Taken” franchise is line producer.

Moresco, who grew up in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, brings a unique understanding of the neighborhood’s history and the families that comprised this tight knit, and often violent, community.

“This is a story I’ve wanted to tell for a very long time and I’m thrilled that now is that time,” says Moresco.

John Hurt-Richard Burton Movie ‘1984’ to Screen in Theaters on April 4

21 March 2017 12:04 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

More than 180 art houses in North America and Europe have scheduled April 4 showings of “1984,” the dystopian drama starring John Hurt and Richard Burton.

“1984” director Michael Radford has agreed to film an introduction and post-screening discussion for the theatrical re-release of “1984,” to play before and after screenings in all participating theaters. The re-release event was first announced in February and the number of theaters participating in the National Event Day screenings has more than doubled since then.

The interview will be produced by Santa Fe-based Atalaya Productions and Austin-based Violet Crown Films. Plans are for Radford to recall stories about the making of the movie while discussing the ways in which George Orwell’s novel — first published in 1949 — has retained its currency.

Hurt portrayed Winston Smith in “1984,” the final film in Burton’s career. Burton died a few months prior to the release and the film is dedicated to him.

John Hurt: 1940-2017

28 January 2017 12:56 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Den Of Geek Jan 28, 2017

We've lost the brilliant Sir John Hurt, at the age of 77.

Some very sad news this morning. The wonderful Sir John Hurt has died, at the age of 77. Hurt had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago, eventually being given the all clear. But his agent announced today that we’d lost him.

Sir John Hurt always felt like one of us. For geeks of various ages, he was Joseph Merrick in The Elephant Man, he was Winston Smith in Michael Radford’s film of 1984. He was, of course, Kane in Alien, the heart of a genuinely iconic scene of cinema. And, more recently, he was, of course, The War Doctor in Doctor Who. Remember that cliffhanger? We certainly do.

He also brought his gravitas to projects such as V For Vendetta, Hellboy, and Snowpiercer. Heck, the list of what he’s given the world is not a short one. »

Mel Brooks, executive producer of “The Elephant Man,” tweeted that he was a “truly magnificent talent.”

It was terribly sad today to learn of John Hurt's passing. He was a truly magnificent talent.
