Two Must Reads: Asian Actors Speak Out, and Method Acting's History

9 May 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

After two hit TV shows Daniel Dae Kim is Broadway's new King of SiamTwo Must Reads today that are a pleasure to highlight

The Hollywood Reporter published a piece called "Where are the Asian-American Movie Stars?" that's definitely worth a look. Kudos to fine actors like Maggie Q, Daniel Wu, Daniel Dae Kim, Ming-Na Wen and others for forging and holding down careers (it can't have been easy) and speaking out about the white-washing. The problem is not just that Hollywood doesn't get it but that they also don't make use of what they already have. There is plentiful camera-ready talent out there, but Hollywood mostly ignores Asian Actors.

The white washing is so egregious lately that even an upcoming animated film from China called The Guardian Brothers has an all non-Asian voice cast for its Us release! What the holy f***? That cast includes Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, »

The actor, who recently launched a country-music career, has signed on as a producer for 24: Legacy – a new show in the same universe that stars Web Therapy's Dan Bucatinsky and Straight Outta Compton's Corey Hawkins, among others – and has not ruled out reprising his Jack Bauer character. 'Divergent Series: Allegiant' Gets Panned by Critics

The critics are diverging away from Allegiant. Lionsgate's third installment in what will be a four-part sci-fi saga based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling Ya trilogy features a cast including Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer and Jeff Daniels, and is directed by Robert Schwentke. The film earned $2.4 million on Thursday night (down from Insurgent's strong $4.1 million in Thursday-night showings this time last year), and on Friday afternoon, the film had a score of 34 on Metacritic and just 10 on Rotten Tomatoes. { "nid":

Box Office: ‘Allegiant’ Debuts to Franchise-Low $2.4 Million on Thursday

18 March 2016 8:03 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Shailene Woodley’s “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” opened with a solid, albeit franchise-low $2.35 million on Thursday night.

Lionsgate noted that the $2.35 million figure is the second-highest Thursday preview gross of the year. But it’s also the lowest preview showing (at more than 2,800 North American locations) number for Lionsgate’s post-apocalyptic franchise, which saw “Divergent” launch with $4.9 million in 2014, while “Insurgent” took in $4.1 million last year.

The third installment in the futuristic saga is looking to debut to between $34 million and $40 million at 3,740 locations this weekend. That’s well below the $54.6 million that “Divergent” pulled in when the series kicked off and the $52.3 million launch of “Insurgent.”

Allegiant” centers on a dystopian world in Chicago where society is separated into five personality-related factions to ensure safety. Woodley stars as Tris Prior, who rebels against the system with Theo James’ Four character.

Allegiant” also stars Jeff Daniels, Octavia Spencer, Ray Stevenson, »

Movie Review – The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016)

18 March 2016 6:40 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Divergent Series: Allegiant, 2016.

Directed by Robert Schwentke.

Starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Naomi Watts, Jeff Daniels, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Zoe Kravitz, Jonny Weston, Keiynan Lonsdale, Maggie Q, Daniel Dae Kim, Octavia Spencer, Bill Skarsgard, Nadia Hilker, Mekhi Phifer, Ray Stevenson, and Ashley Judd.

Synopsis:

After the earth-shattering revelations of Insurgent, Tris must escape with Four beyond the wall that encircles Chicago to finally discover the shocking truth of what lies behind it.

Everyone’s favorite worst dressed and worst tattooed heroic system rebels are back for another entry in The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the next slice of this painfully boring Ya novel adaptation that makes no sense. That statement is more-so true this time around than ever, as apparently details from the books have been changed and rewritten to alter the story so that it fits the recent Hollywood trend of splitting the final chapter of the saga up into two parts. »
