In 1970-71 he worked as a Vietnam war correspondent and Saigon bureau chief for Newsweek.
His experiences in the 1960s as an honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery inspired his 1983 novel 'Gardens of Stone', later made into a film (1987) by Francis Ford Coppola.
