TV Review: ‘Happyish’

3 April 2015 8:05 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The arrival of “Happyish” comes with a dour asterisk, with the Showtime series nearly having been derailed by the death of its original star, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Steve Coogan has filled that void, in a show characterized by strong casting and a whimsical tone, but also a rather tired conceit about self-absorbed yuppies grappling with questions of mortality as they approach middle age. All told, the premiere and a subsequent episode play like a slightly less angst-ridden companion to HBO’s “Togetherness,” with a higher comedy quotient — though one that still leaves Shalom Auslander’s creation waffling somewhat charitably in the zone of “goodish.”

Showtime has opted to preview the program following the season finale of “Shameless,” in advance of its regular slot behind “Nurse Jackie” later this month. Coogan plays Thom Payne (the series has a not-so-subtle fondness for philosophers), who is introduced celebrating a 44th birthday with his »

Steve Coogan Is Happyish In Trailer For The Upcoming Showtime Series

12 March 2015 5:43 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Audiences will soon be getting Happyish, as the highly anticipated Showtime series finally makes its debut next month. The show that was initially beset by tragedy – as original star Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away – has respectfully re-cast, re-grouped and re-shot, and a snippet of the result is now available in a new trailer. Striking a much lighter tone than expected, Happyish now stars Steve Coogan, employing an accent that is perhaps best described as ‘American-ish.’

Thom Payne (Coogan) has hit his mid-40s, and is facing the prospect of working for a new, younger, more hip boss who has assumed control of his workplace. A bundle of contradictions, Thom is concerned about erectile dysfunction, but worries that chemical remedies may counteract his anti-depressants. He loathes the current youth-focused trends, but tries his best to make skinny jeans work. Mostly, he wonders if he could be happier, but suspects that this »

Showtime’s ‘Happyish’ gets a new trailer

9 March 2015 5:44 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The untimely death of Philip Seymour Hoffman last year left many projects in limbo, most notably the Hunger Games movie franchise, where he was in the midst of shooting for a pivotal role in the series. However, Hoffman’s demise also put to an end the actor’s transition to television, as he was set to take on the lead role in the Showtime series Happyish, following in the footsteps of numerous performers who had made the transition to the small screen. While Hoffman’s demise put the show in jeopardy, it soon righted itself, going in a different direction by having Steve Coogan step into the lead. Coogan, who has previously found success in television with the Alan Partridge character across numerous shows, as well as movies such as Hamlet 2 and The Other Guys, plays the role of Thom Payne. The show’s synopsis is as follows:

Hannibal Nabs Zachary Quinto for Season 3 Role

4 March 2015 11:37 AM, PST | | See recent news »

It places the Quinto in the thriller — it does this whenever it’s told.

The Slap and American Horror Story star Zachary Quinto will guest star on Season 3 of NBC’s grisly good Hannibal, TVLine has confirmed.

The actor will play a patient of Gillian Anderson’s Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier for at least one episode — which has us wondering if the show might flash back to that time the enigmatic therapist took a life while under the influence of our titular sociopath.

Sometimes, when I watch The Voice, I feel like Charlie Brown going to kick Lucy’s football.

I’m presented with the same data set I’ve seen so many times before — Adam and Blake compete in a head-to-head battle to win the allegiance of a country crooner, for example — and yet somehow I hold out hope that the result will be different.

Watch: Trailer For Former Philip Seymour Hoffman Show 'Happyish' Now Starring Steve Coogan

9 February 2015 11:24 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

You have to feel a little bit for Steve Coogan, who will face, in every review and interview for the upcoming Showtime series "Happyish," a comparison to Philip Seymour Hoffman. The late actor was attached to star in the series before his tragic death last year, and after a pause, the network decided to press on, swapping in Coogan for Hoffman. But credit to Coogan for clearly making the role his own. The first trailer for "Happyish" is here and Coogan fits the role of an uncomfortably, unhappy middle-aged man quite perfectly. Co-starring Kathryn Hahn, Bradley Whitford, Ellen Barkin, Carrie Preston, Molly Price, and Andre Royo, the show centers on a mid-40s man whose career is thrown for a loop when he gets a new, much younger, social media savvy boss. Coogan has a bit of a Woody Allen thing going on, but with just enough of his own »

Watch: First Look at Showtime’s ‘Happyish’

Showtime has released a teaser for its new comedy, “Happyish,” premiering Sunday, April 26, at 9:30 p.m. The comedy stars Steve Coogan, Kathryn Hahn and Bradley Whitford, with guest stars including Ellen Barkin, Carrie Preston, Molly Price and Andre Royo.

In the half-hour series Coogan plays Thom Payne, a 44-year-old man whose world is thrown into disarray when his 25 year-old wunderkind boss arrives, saying things like “digital,” “social” and “viral.” Is he in need of a “rebranding,” or does he just have a “low joy ceiling?” Maybe pursuing happiness is a fool’s errand? Maybe, after 44 years on this ludicrous planet, settling for “happyish” is the best one can expect.

The series was created, written and executive produced by Shalom Auslander, with Ken Kwapis exec producing and directing the pilot. Kwapis’ producing partner Alexandra Beattie will serve as co-executive producer through their In Cahoots banner.
