Emmy episode analysis: Can Margo Martindale bring 'The Americans' in from the cold?

27 July 2015 11:59 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Though Emmy voters at large have been slow to embrace FX's "The Americans," they have a soft spot for Margo Martindale, who is nominated for Best Drama Guest Actress for the third year in a row as Kgb handler Claudia in the 1980s-set spy drama. But she has yet to win. She lost this race in 2013 to Carrie Preston ("The Good Wife") and last year to Allison Janney ("Masters of Sex"). Will 'The Good Wife' continue its Emmys winning streak this year?

26 July 2015 10:26 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

"The Good Wife" has had a unique track record at the Emmys: it has won one acting award every season so far. As user Amg explains in our forums, "Julianna Margulies [2011, 2014], Archie Panjabi [2010], Carrie Preston [2013] and Martha Plimpton [2012] have won for each of the five seasons thus far." Now he wonders, "Will the winning streak continue for its sixth season?" -Break- Emmys exclusive: Which episode is submitted by Christine Baranski ('Good Wife')? The CBS legal drama has three acting nominations this year: Drama Supporting Actor (Alan Cumming), Drama Supporting Actress (Christine Baranski) and Drama Guest Actor (Michael J. Fox). None of them are currently forecast to win according to our racetrack odds, but could one of them pull off an upset? After all, hardly anyone anticipated Panjabi's win for the first season. Baranski, the only actor to be nominated for all six seasons of the show, ranks fourth in her cat. »

Is Supergirl the Earliest Pilot Leak Ever?

22 May 2015 7:59 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Faster than a speeding bullet, the pilot for CBS’ Supergirl has illegally leaked onto file-sharing sites.

VideosCBS’ Supergirl Trailer Debuts

CBS ordered the buzzy superhero drama to series barely two weeks ago, and only unveiled the first footage last Wednesday, May 13, during its annual Upfront presentation to advertisers.

The leaking of pilots for an upcoming TV season is nothing new, though Supergirl‘s super-fast pirating would seem to set a land-speed record for a high-profile project. Last summer, for example, the pilots for The Flash and Constantine — also comics book-based fare appealing to a certain crafty, passionate crowd — didn’t »

NBC Bets On Live Programs, Neil Patrick Harris, ‘Heroes’ Sequel For Fall

10 May 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Live from New York, Los Angeles, and, perhaps, several other places, it’s NBC’s fall schedule.

The Comcast-owned network said it would start to rely more heavily on live and live-to-tape programming in the fall, a reflection, perhaps, of the troubles the outlet has had in attaining hit status for much of its scripted fare in past seasons. NBC is set to run a live variety show featuring Neil Patrick Harris on Tuesday nights; run episodes of the sitcom “Undateable” on Friday nights that are performed live; and continue to lean on two of its most durable franchises, “The Voice” on Mondays and Tuesdays, and “Sunday Night Football” on Sunday nights in the first half of the season. The network will also mount the third in a series of live broadcasts of popular Broadway fare, setting a take of “The Wiz” for the holiday season.

With pickups for the fall season in full swing, NBC is betting on three comedies, from Ride Along producer Will PackerHot in Cleveland‘s Suzanne Martin and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer.

People Are Talking, created by DJ Nash, centers on two neighborhood couples who meet often to obsess over everything from sex, class and race to their suspicions that the new babysitter is a porn star. Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tone Bell are two of the main foursome, Packer will exec-produce and Pam Fryman (How I Met Your Mother) directed the pilot.

Crowded, from Martin and actor Sean Hayes, is yet another multigenerational family comedy (following Modern Family, The Goldbergs, Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat and others in what seems to be a never-ending trend) about parents whose future plans are derailed when their two adult daughters experience trouble in their personal and professional lives and move back in. NBC Picks Up Sitcoms Superstore and Crowded With America Ferrera and Patrick Warburton

7 May 2015 1:09 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, and Patrick Warburton all got new gigs today, as NBC picked up two new sitcoms to series. Superstore stars Ferrera and Feldman as workers at a Walmart-style retailer who "tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions" while presumedly being forbidden from unionizing. Crowded sees Warburton and True Blood's Carrie Preston as empty-nesters who suddenly find their house full up when their millennial daughters (Miranda Cosgrove and Mia Serafino) and elderly parents all move back in. So that's an Office-like workplace sitcom, a multi-generational family comedy in the style of CBS; add them to the How I Met Your Mother–style People Are Talking, and it's clear that the Peacock is trying to get out of its sitcom recession by any means necessary. »

'Superstore,' 'Crowded' get NBC series orders

7 May 2015 12:34 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

I appreciate that NBC at least let one other piece of pre-upfronts news break -- Rip, "Hart of Dixie" -- between piecemeal announcements for new comedy pilots. Just hours after picking up the multi-cam comedy "People Are Talking," NBC has added to what is essentially a bare comedy cupboard with series orders for "Crowded" and "Superstore." The trio of Thursday comedies join the strange "Coach" reboot and Eva Longoria's "Telenovela" in NBC's 2015-2016 in-season plans, while "Mr. Robinson" and "The Carmichael Show" are premiering limited runs in August. It's at least conceivable that NBC may not renew a single one of its existing comedies, though "Undateable" is probably reasonably safe for a third season pickup.  Let's look at the two new comedies, both ensembles featuring a slew of TV favorites. "Superstore" marks America Ferrara's return to the small screen and also brings Ben Feldman back to NBC just one »
