Argentinian director Jorge Preloran has lost his 10-year battle with prostate cancer at the age of 75.

The documentary maker passed away on 28 March in Los Angeles.

Preloran enjoyed a career spanning four decades and is celebrated as a pioneer in the field of ethnographic documentary film - the study of human societies.

He is best known for movies such as 1983's My Aunt Nora, and 1979's Luther Metke at 94, as well as the TV series Patagonia - In Search of Its Remote Past in 1992.

He spent 18 years as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) teaching at the School of Theater, Film and Television, before retiring in 1994.

Preloran was honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina in 2005, and his religious project Imaginero was recently named by movie critics as one of the top 10 Argentine films of all time, reports Variety.com. »
