Brian Gallagher's Top Overrated / Underrated Movies of 2012

31 December 2012 2:49 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in June, I had only seen just over 20 movies that had been released in 2012. After deciding that was unacceptable, and thanks to Netflix Instant, Redbox, Amazon Instant Video, and of course, advanced screenings and my local Hollywood theaters, I devoted the last half of the year to seeing as many movies as I could, bringing my tally to around 150 for the year (check out the full list of all the 2012 movies I watched this year here). Since the Mayan apocalypse never came a few days ago, I figured it is a good time to break down my favorite movies of the year. Like last year, I have compiled three separate lists: the Most Overrated Moves of the Year, Most Underrated Movies of the Year, and my Top 10.

Now, there are a lot of great movies that you will not find on these lists, such as blockbusters Marvel's The Avengers, »

The best TV episodes of 2012: 'Mad Men,' 'Walking Dead' and 'Parks and Recreation'

30 December 2012 8:30 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Any discussion of TV's best in 2012 begins with a single show: "Mad Men." The standout episode of the year's finest series was also its most divisive. "The Other Woman" split "Mad Men" fans into two camps. Those who watched in horror and railed, "How could Joan do that?" And those who watched in horror and reasoned, "How could Joan not do that?"

The brilliance of "The Other Woman" doesn't simply involve the skin-crawling central storyline -- the men of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce offer Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) partnership in the agency if she sleeps with a sleazy Jaguar exec to help win an account -- or the fist-pumping subplot -- Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) receives a job offer too good to pass up and decides to leave Scdp, and mentor Don Draper (Jon Hamm), behind. It's the way the episode, written by Semi Chellas and Matthew Weiner and directed by Phil Abraham, »

Zero Dark Thirty 5 New Photos

26 December 2012 2:00 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Kathryn Bigelow‘s new film, Zero Dark Thirty gives a misleading impression that torture was an important part of finding Bin Laden, but it is one of three leading contenders (Lincoln and Argo) in the annual battle for Hollywood’s best picture Oscar.

The film falsely credits brutal interrogation techniques with having helped locate Osama Bin Laden so it is possible that the senatorial assault on Zero Dark Thirty will hurt the film’s Oscar chances, but it could just as easily fire up a voter base as well.

Bigelow and screenwriter/producer Mark Boal began work on a film back in 2008 and the political drama-thriller was shoved into the limelight when Bin Laden was actually killed during a raid of his compound in May 2011.

The film earned four Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actress – Drama for Jessica Chastain (above) and had its premiere in Los Angeles, »

The best TV episodes of 2012: 'Parks and Recreation' wins with 'The Debate'

26 December 2012 11:00 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

It's not hard to grasp the off-screen reasons why "Parks and Recreation" pulls only modest ratings.

It premiered behind in the spring of 2009 as part of an NBC comedy lineup that was already a shadow of its former self in terms of ratings -- only "The Office" cracked the Nielsen Top 50 in viewers in the 2008-09 season. "Parks and Rec" also didn't make a great first impression -- its six-episode first season drew only lukewarm reviews (yours truly said it "has some work to do to find its footing") from critics, and audiences followed suit. The pattern was set then, and with NBC mired deep in fourth place for much of the show's run, attracting lots of new viewers to subsequent seasons just wasn't going to happen.

Since the spring of 2009, though, "Parks and Rec" has become one of the most consistently fine comedies on television. Every on-screen reason the »

'Zero Dark Thirty' (2012) Movie Review

20 December 2012 1:15 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Condensing a ten-year manhunt down to 157 minutes is impossible, and yet, with Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal have managed to come as close as possible without turning the story into a series of political talking points, no matter how hard some will try to do so. Zero Dark Thirty is a cold, calculated, compelling and intensely satisfying procedural where the story and its central character are more than enough to keep you engaged without overwrought dramatic flourishes. The mere idea of opening the film with an extended torture scene, as we are first introduced to the story's central character, Maya (Jessica Chastain), is enough to let us know the stakes involved. Maya stands in the background as her CIA colleague (Jason Clarke) interrogates an Arab prisoner using what have been referred to as "enhanced interrogation techniques" -- you are probably more familiar with terms such as sleep-deprivation and water-boarding. »

Zero Dark Thirty: Chris Pratt in His Underwear, Shows Off Hot Navy Seal Body

20 December 2012 12:02 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Zero Dark Thirty is one very serious film, but that doesn't mean we can't stop for a moment to admire the body Chris Pratt was rocking under his fatigues in the Oscar buzzy movie. The Parks and Recreation funnyman, who plays a member of Navy Seal Team 6, which was responsible for capturing and then killing Osama Bin Laden, transformed his body into a massive bulk of shredded muscle. Just take a look at the photo Pratt shared of himself during his appearance last night on Conan. The very revealing pic shows him wearing nothing but a pair of white boxer briefs while flexing in the mirror of a hotel bathroom. There still seems to be some question about the conscience clause added to the National Defense Appropriations Bill. Some are calling it a license to bully, but others say it simply allows an out for soldiers while maintaining the rules against actions and speech. Generally speaking, if a law if worded that poorly, it will be implemented inconsistently.

Chris Pratt as You've Never Seen Him Before: Ripped (Photo)

Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on a lean and muscle-bound Chris Pratt. As bumbling Andy Dwyer on NBC's Parks and Recreation, the lovable actor proudly carries around a few extra pounds.  But Pratt had to shed them quickly in order to play a member of Seal Team Six, the elite group of Navy counterterrorism specialists that took down Osama bin Laden, in the awards contender Zero Dark Thirty, which opens Dec. 19. Showing before-and-after pictures to Conan O'Brien on Monday's Conan, Pratt earned applause and wolf whistles as he posed in a mirror with his new

Add Chris Pratt to the list of actors who have lost/gained a huge amount of weight for a movie role. 'Zero Dark Thirty' review: Controversial film ushers in new era

19 December 2012 9:00 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

"Zero Dark Thirty" was going to be controversial no matter how director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal handled the subject of the American hunt for Osama bin Laden. Some will say the movie comes too soon after bin Laden's death, some will say that it is propaganda for the Obama administration, and some will say that the story the movie tells is wrong.

The thing about "Zero Dark Thirty" is that those complaints don't really hold up. Yes, the debate about whether the depiction of extreme torture in the film is necessary is a valid one, but as Bigelow said recently, "I wish it was not part of our history, but it was." As for that argument that the torture shown in the movie leads to the clue that tips off the hunt for bin Laden, that's not true. It's actually during a different scene where the prisoner is »
