Died when he lost control of his car whilst talking to his girlfriend on his mobile phone.

Appeared on Roy Castle's programme "Record Breakers" (1972) breaking his own record of beating drums. The drums were set in rows and he was beating each drum once as he ran along each row.

His partner at the time of his death was Ms. Sharon Reeve.

Was working with long-time collaborator Brian May (of Queen) on material for Brian May's next solo album ("Another World" [1998]) at the time of his death. Much was completed, and Brian May chose to finish the project's drum parts himself (through a mix of live and programmed percussion) rather than bring in a new session drummer.

Brian May's first CD single from "Another World" in 1998 featured an audio tribute to his friend Cozy titled "Brian Talks", as well as a PC & Mac enhanced CD-ROM video message. The single was dedicated: "A Tribute To Cozy Powell (1947 - 1998)"

Changed his birth name of Colin to Cozy, in honor of Cozy Cole.

In the British television-show "Record Breakers", he played 400 drums in just 58 seconds.
