Total Recall Review

3 August 2012 7:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Total Recall Directed by: Len Wiseman Written by: Kurt Wimmer, Mark Bomback (screenplay), Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon, Jon Povill, Kurt Wimmer (screen story) Starring: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bokeem Woodbine, Bill Nighy, John Cho, Will Yun Lee When plans were announced to remake the sci-fi classic Total Recall (1990), they were largely met with skepticism. Most people still hold the original in high regard, so why mess with a good thing? Adding fuel to the fire was the questionable choice of replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger with Colin Farrell this time around. One look at Ah-nuld and there was not a shadow of a doubt that he could kick anyone’s ass, but Farrell? Not so much. However, the filmmakers made the wise decision to differentiate this version from the original by revamping the story rather than remaking it directly. Whether or not this remake is warranted is still open to debate, »

Blu-ray Review: Total Recall – Ultimate Rekall Edition

Total Recall: Ultimate Rekall Edition

Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox | Written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, Gary Goldman | Directed by Paul Verhoeven

Total Recall is arguably a film that sits firmly in the domain of cinematic nostalgia and has definite cult status.  People look at the remake that is currently being publicised and as usual some look forward to it and some complain that it’s a remake that is just not needed.  I think my view is that it’s a remake that needs to be done right. The original, while good, is a flawed throwback to eighties schlock sci-fi classics but got lost in translation of constant re-writes and ever changing directors; Strangely though it still holds up and for its time is quite an ambitious tale.

I’m sure we all know the story of Total Recall by now, »
