Annapurna Pictures Goes 'Spring Breakers' With Harmony Korine's Latest

4 September 2012 12:29 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

John Hillcoat, Wong Kar-Wai, Kathryn Bigelow, Paul Thomas Anderson, David O. Russell, Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman. To say that Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures have impeccable taste in filmmakers would be an understatement, and the shingle is now adding another acclaimed name under the banner. Literally minutes after it has finished screening for press at the Venice Film Festival (our review is coming shortly), Annapurna Pictures has snapped up the U.S. rights to Harmony Korine's zany "Spring Breakers." Starring James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, Heather Morris and Gucci Mane (!?) with Cliff Martinez and Skrillex scoring the film, and Randall Poster serving as music supervisor, this is certainly Korine's most "professional" effort to date. But the premise is distinctly his own. Here's the official synopsis: Spring Breakers tells the story of four sexy college girls as they plan to fund their »

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ Debuts New Image, Adds Alan Tudyk and Skrillex

12 July 2012 5:17 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Alan Tudyk and Skrillex. Not a pairing I ever thought we’d see in a headline, but Disney is the one to bring them together.

I didn’t expect that, either.

Anyhow, I’ve sacrificed two lines before telling you that the beloved Firefly star has been working on Wreck-It Ralph, the studio’s videogame-inspired animated feature — from which you can see a new still above — that stars John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch, Sarah Silverman, and Jack McBrayer. His character is named King Candy, which is leading some to already presume he’s a ruler of the candy-filled world that Silverman‘s character inhabits. Not that such a deduction is real detective work. [FirstShowing]

And when it comes to every Midwestern parent’s least-favorite musical artist, director Rich Moore announced that Skrillex is involved, having been hired to compose the theme song for Hero’s Duty. (That’s an in-movie first-person »

'Drive' & 'Contagion' Composer Cliff Martinez Co-Scoring Harmony Korine's 'Spring Breakers' With Skrillex

6 July 2012 2:35 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

"Just when we think Korine was out of twists, he's come with another one, so we wonder what's coming next," we wrote at the end of our last update about "Spring Breakers," which was recently revealed to have electronic dance music guy Skrillex providing some music for the movie, with celebrated music supervisor Randall Poster (the Wes Anderson movies) also taking part. And as we expected, another surprise, with a big musical name now also throwing his weight in there as well. Film Music Reporter reveals that Cliff Martinez, most recently noted for being behind the excellent scores to "Drive" and "Contagion," is now co-scoring the movie with Skrillex, which is kind of mind bending. There's no word yet on what that collaboration will entail -- if they'll each do separate, distinct pieces or work together or a mix of both -- but the composer is no stranger to mixing it up with musical acts. »

Skrillex and M83 contributing new music to 'Spring Breakers' and 'Oblivion'

28 June 2012 5:30 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Two prominent dance-electronica musicians -- Skrillex and M83 -- have been tapped to contribute new music to two very different films. The former, Grammy Award-winning artist will be dropping the bass all over "Spring Breakers," the James Franco-starring film from the director of "Kids," Harmony Korine. In an interview with Pitchfork, "Spring Breakers" music supervisor Randall Poster revealed that he and Korine rang up Skrillex after checking out some good, old-fashioned YouTube clips. "I had heard of Skrillex, but I wasn't watching it that closely. And Harmony, who I've worked with forever, sent me a link to some Skrillex YouTubes, and I »

Skrillex Is Writing Music For Harmony Korine's 'Spring Breakers,' Randall Poster Doing Music Supervision

27 June 2012 7:20 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

If you're asking "What's a Skrillex?" chances are you're not in high school. If you haven't heard his music -- yes, he's an electronic musician -- you might recognize his face or perhaps his mad sweep of hair that flops over the shaved side of his head. Either way, the guy won three Grammys last year and is on every kid's iPhone or Android or whatever they carry around these days. And now he's making the leap to scoring movies, and it's on a project that's already pretty far out there.

Speaking with Pitchfork, frequent Wes Anderson collaborator, music supervisor Randall Poster (who has also worked on "The Hangover," "Boardwalk Empire," "The Vow," "Whip It" and many more) revealed that he's currently working on Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" and Skrillex is along for the ride.

Make Your Own Mixtape: 17 Songs From Wes Anderson's Films That Are Not On The Official Soundtracks

25 May 2012 10:34 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Today sees the latest film from director Wes Anderson, "Moonrise Kingdom," hit theaters, and consistent with the music-obsessed filmmaker's work, it's as much a treat for the ears as it is for the eyes. 'Moonrise' boasts another soundtrack of unexpected cuts assembled with the great music supervisor Randall Poster, including Francoise Hardy, Hank Williams, and for the first time, a significant amount of classical music including Benjamin Britten and Leonard Bernstein. And if that's not enough, there's also additional pieces by Alexandre Desplat and drum percussion by old musical cohort Mark Mothersbaugh.

But as is the case with most films, not everything's on the official soundtrack release, which is in stores now: the movie features three additional Hank Williams songs, and pieces by Mozart and Schubert that aren't included on the disc. Given that Anderson's films are so replete with music, the soundtracks have quite often left out key songs for licensing or other reasons, »

The Ultimate Wes Anderson Playlist

24 May 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Directors who plug their favorite songs into films is nothing new, but Wes Anderson is one of the few -- along with Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson and Cameron Crowe -- who have turned the movie soundtrack into an art form.

From the underappreciated Rolling Stones song "2000 Man" in Anderson's debut feature "Bottle Rocket" to a Brazilian acoustic guitarist playing David Bowie tunes in the oceanography adventure movie "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," Anderson's musical choices for his films are as patiently awaited by his fans as the films themselves.

Though the tweed-stylin' director has stated that his new movie, "Moonrise Kingdom" (which opens May 25), "has a big musical element, but there are not really songs in it," his previous films are a master class in how to use songs in movies. Here are 11 of our favorites.

The Best & Worst Of SXSW '12: The Playlist's Complete Coverage

19 March 2012 1:55 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

SXSW is officially done for another year. Well, technically, it's been done since Saturday, but it's taken a few days for The Playlist team members to emerge from their BBQ & queso comas. Nevertheless, the film strand of the festival is over and it's time to look forward, to Tribeca, Cannes and whatever else lies beyond.

And we have to confess, from most people that we've talked to, the line-up turned out to be somewhat underwhelming this time around. For whatever reason (a comparatively strong Sundance, perhaps?), there were few breakout hits that hadn't played at other festivals first. Indeed, the movies that emerged with the best reactions were mainstream studio pictures, in the shape of "21 Jump Street" and "The Cabin In the Woods," with no breakout buzz films to rival "Attack The Block" or "Weekend" last year.

Not that the festival was a wash out: while there were few stunning surprises, »

SXSW '12: Richard Linklater & Randall Poster Talk Inspirations, Soundtracks & The Songs That Got Away

16 March 2012 12:20 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Yesterday at the SXSW Film Festival, we sat in on a panel consisting, mostly, of a laid back conversation between filmmaker Richard Linklater (whose new film "Bernie" played the fest) and legendary music supervisor Randall Poster (he has two movies in the theaters right now, "Friends With Kids" and "The Vow," he produced the LCD Soundsystem documentary "Shut Up And Play The Hits" which played SXSW and just picked up an Emmy for his work on Martin Scorsese's "Boardwalk Empire"). The two had worked together before, most notably on "School of Rock," and the hour-long chat was breezy and informative, giving off the feeling of two old friends catching up and sharing stories. There was also a fair bit of prickliness (one of the first things Linklater groaned was, "That was when they actually put out soundtracks").

One of the more fun aspects of the panel was that Linklater »
