Halo 4: the film of the game

29 September 2012 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A web-only film based on the Halo series (previewed below) is the start of something special

Given that both are such strong visual mediums, video games and films have endured a surprisingly fractious relationship. Yet it is one that neither seems willing to walk away from – the symbiotic allure at its heart is just too strong. The games industry brings ready-made scenarios, characters and a fanbase to movie producers, while exposure on the big screen feeds back into game sales.

Tempting, yes, but the relationship has been repeatedly tarnished, House of the Dead and Wing Commander being prime examples. Now, however, the very model of how film is made and distributed is being examined anew. In Microsoft's first foray into the market, it has chosen to debut its films based on the Halo games not at the cinema but in the form of a free-to-view online series that begins on Friday. »

‘Mission Impossible,’ ‘Smallville’ Actors Headline Cast of ‘Halo’ Web Series

12 July 2012 10:15 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Halo and action-sci-fi-adventure genre fans rejoice! The cast of the much-hyped (and possibly paradigm shifting) live action web series, Halo: Forward Unto Dawn has been announced. And the individuals set to play characters in the five 15-minute installments of the famed video game's online video have some high quality pedigrees. From Smallville to Mission Impossible, these actors appeared constantly on traditional entertainment mediums. The lead roles belong to Tom Green (who will play Thomas Lasky) and Daniel Cudmore (who will embody Master Chief). Although Green isn't yet a household name (at least not in the Us), Cudmore is well known for his roles in X-Men and three of the Twilight installments. Aside from the leads, you'll probably recognize Anna Popplewell (as Chyler Silva), who played Susan Pevensie in the Chronicles of Narnia, Ayelet Zurer (who will play Mehaffey) for her roles in Angels and Demons, Vantage Point and the upcoming »

This week's new films

9 March 2012 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

John Carter (12A)

(Andrew Stanton, 2012, Us) Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, Dominic West, Samantha Morton, Ciarán Hinds. 132 mins

Despite the technological might of Pixar, this Martian epic still feels closer to retro fare such as Flash Gordon or Dune. It's a cumbersome hero's journey fully of silly names, skimpy costumes and princesses in peril – stuff we've seen recycled so many times since Edgar Rice Burroughs first wrote this, it now feels laughably quaint. Still, it's always fun to see an expensively rendered alien world, even if cheesy myth-making comes with the territory.

Trishna (15)

(Michael Winterbottom, 2011, UK) Freida Pinto, Riz Ahmed, Roshan Seth. 113 mins

Hardy's Tess looks a comfortable fit with modern-day India in this naturalistic drama, which takes liberties with the text but finds new resonances, as Pinto's subdued villager struggles to find happiness with a wealthy young British-Indian.

The Raven (15)

(James McTeigue, 2012, Us) John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans. »
