Did graduate work in physics at Harvard where, in 1973, he solved the problem of the nature of what's known as the Strong Force, which binds atoms together, a calculation for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics on Oct. 5, 2004, in conjunction with David Gross and David Wilczek.
