Jason Horton is Set to Unleash His Monsters in the Woods

11 December 2011 10:16 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

I’m a fan of monster movies, for better or for worse. And while I’m still unsure as to which end of that spectrum director Jason Horton’s “Monsters in the Woods” will fall, this won’t dissuade me from investigating the flick when it hits DVD this February. The film stars Glenn Plummer, an actor who doesn’t get nearly enough respect these days. Anyone who has seen “South Central” can attest to the man’s greatness. In fact, my well-worn VHS copy gets at least one viewing every year. But, I digress. Stand by for one hell of a lengthy synopsis: Low budget filmmaker Jayson (Glenn Plummer) has made the movie of his dreams… but to his dismay, it can’t sell in Hollywood. The distributors tell him, “You have nothing exploitative in your movie. Add some sex scenes, more violence, and maybe we’ll buy your film. »

Monsters in the Woods and The Source of All Evil (Producers): A Movie Review

9 December 2011 8:00 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*a screener of this film was provided by Osiris Entertainment.

**here be some spoilers.

Director/writer: Jason Horton.

Cast: Lee Perkins, Linda Bella, Curt Mega and Paul Misko.

This film should really have been called Angels and Hellhounds. With that aside, Jason Horton's fifth film as director takes place in Big Bear National Park where a film crew is shooting a low budget horror movie. Their film then turns into a real horror film when an earthquake releases hounds from hell onto the set. Now, the crew is chased down by a host of creatures that look more like walking crabs than anything else. Meanwhile, dir. Horton satirizes his real life as a low budget filmmaker through the character Jayson (Glen Plummer).

At the black heart of this film is the producer Bravo (Blaine Cade). It seems that hell has released him temporarily from below. He will be brought »

DVD Review(s): Juice and South Central

1 October 2011 3:49 PM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Independent distributer Second Sight is re-releasing two cult Afro-American urban films, Juice and South Central this Monday. As both films deal with similar subject and were released in the same year, a joint review seemed appropriate. Both films are about young black Americans struggling to beat the cycle of violence that threatens their lives and their cultures.

Juice

Stars: Omar Epps, Tupac Shakur, Jermaine ‘Huggy’ Hopkins | Written by Ernest R. Dickerson, Gerard Brown | Directed by Ernest R. Dickerson

Juice boasts an impressive cast, including the likes of Omar Epps (best known as House’s Dr Foreman), Samuel L Jackson, Queen Latifah and, best of all, late rap legend Tupac. The film follows a group of four school-skipping friends in Harlem, all of whom are fairly dopey, huggable hip-hoppers, rather than violent gang-bangers. Q (Epps) dreams of becoming a superstar DJ and auditions for a prestigious competition. Bishop (Tupac) however, wishes »

DVD Review - South Central (1992)

29 September 2011 11:36 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

South Central, 1992.

Directed by Stephen Milburn Anderson.

Starring Glenn Plummer, Byron Minns, Lexie Bigham and Christian Coleman.

Synopsis:

In South Central, Los Angeles, Bobby, a gang member is put away in prison for ten years after committing a murder. During his time inside, he learns that his son is doomed to follow the same gang life as him.

In the film world, Los Angeles seems to be the city of lost hope, rather than the city of lost angels. Unless your looking at the rise of an up and coming star, you're looking at the down trodden ghettos; an extreme contrast to the glitzy Hollywood-land image of the town. Whilst no large city isn't a stranger to the strife of gang warfare, Los Angeles always seems to be one of the first five cities to pop into your head when it comes to the dreaded G word. So what better »
