When the moment comes for Chris Evans to put down Captain America's shield, we'll be sorry to see the back of one of the best big screen superhero portrayals ever. But Marvel's loss will be cinema's gain, going by the interesting projects he's chosen between his more red, white and blue escapades. In Gifted, he's put whatever blockbuster clout he may have behind a project that deserves it, and the result is one of the year's nicest surprises.
Evans plays Frank Adler, a boat mechanic who lives in Florida with his seven-year-old niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) and a one-eyed rescue cat called Fred. Mary is a child prodigy who immediately captures the attention of her first-grade teacher Bonnie (Jenny Slate) with her advanced grasp of maths.

Crooked treasure hunters tangle with menacing black gangsters in this crime-action siege movie from 1992, with a fine filmmaker pedigree. The late Bill Paxton leads a great cast — William Sadler, Ice-t, Art Evans — in a tense standoff that turns into a murderous ordeal when it’s discovered that a million-dollar cache of gold is to be had. In the three years since the Sundance Film Festival premiere of Imperial Dreams, life has greatly changed for John Boyega. He’s shot two Star Wars films, he’s in the middle of shooting a Pacific Rim sequel, and worked with James Ponsoldt and Kathryn Bigelow on new features. After being in distribution limbo, Malik Vitthal’s drama will now get a Netflix release next week and they’ve released a new trailer.
The drama is based on a young troubled writer who has to struggle in the imperial courts projects while single handedly raising his son. Considering we missed it back at Sundance, where it won an Audience Award in its Next section, we’re looking forward to checking it out next week.
