Lifetime's 'Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret': 'She was deeply in love,' says director Jace Alexander

22 June 2013 3:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

There was once a time that weeks or months or even years would pass between an incident and the movie made about it. But in a modern TV world of instant gratification, apparently now a story can be put on film before its climax has even happened in real life.

On May 8, a jury in Maricopa County, Ariz., returned a verdict of guilty on the charge of first-degree murder in the case of 32-year-old Californian Jodi Arias, a high-school dropout who pursued photography while working at a restaurant and in sales at PrePaid Legal Services.

On Saturday, June 22, Lifetime airs "Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret," a TV movie inspired by the case, which was in production during the latter phases of the trial. Tania Raymonde ("Lost," "Death Valley") stars as Arias, with Jesse Lee Soffer ("The Mob Doctor") as the victim, Travis Alexander.

News from the Dead Zone: Comicpalooza’s Dollar Baby Film Festival

30 May 2013 3:00 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

One of the main attractions at this year’s Comicpalooza in Houston—in addition to appearances by the likes of Patrick Stewart, Michelle Rodriguez and Danny Trejo—was the three-day Dollar Baby Film Festival organized by Shawn S. Lealos.

What’s a “Dollar Baby?” It’s a short film based on a Stephen King story or novella. For decades, King has allowed people to acquire limited film rights to an available story for one dollar. The resulting movies cannot be released on the internet or shown at for-profit venues, which limits their availability to festivals like this one. The filmmakers can include their movies on clip reels as calling cards. King also gets a copy of the finished product. The quality of these adaptations is all over the map, but the increased availability of affordable digital cameras and video editing software means that the community is growing by leaps and bounds. »

Lifetime’s Jodi Arias Movie Gets June 22 Airdate

23 May 2013 4:02 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret will have its world premiere on Saturday, June 22, at 8 Pm, Lifetime said today. The two-hour movie will be followed by an hourlong documentary, Jodi Arias: Beyond the Headlines, featuring key players in the juicy murder trial. The telepic stars Tania Raymonde as Arias, who was just found guilty of murdering her former boyfriend Travis Alexander, who was found dead in his shower in June 2008 with a slit throat, 27 additional stab wounds and a bullet to the head. Jesse Lee Soffer plays Alexander in the movie, and Tony Plana and David Zayas co-star. The salacious case has been plastered across the tabloids and cable news shows for months; Hln even created a show devoted to the day-to-day happenings of the Phoenix-set trial. The movie was announced last month, with the ending needing to be written after the verdict was known. She was found guilty May 8 and »

Blu-ray Review: "The Man Who Shook The Hand Of Vincente Fernandez" (2012) Starring Ernest Borgnine In His Final Performance

23 May 2013 8:42 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Lee Pfeiffer

Ernest Borgnine's final film, The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vincente Fernandez has been released on Blu-ray on the Indican video label. The following is my review of the film's recent theatrical release:

The independent production is a modestly-budgeted family comedy/drama that presents the legendary Oscar-winner with the kind of showcase role that actors in their nineties almost never have. Borgnine makes the most of it, too, giving a terrific and moving performance that earned him the Best Actor award at last year's Newport Film Festival. Written and produced by Elia Petridis, Fernandez centers on Rex Page (Borgnine), a cantankerous old coot given to griping about every aspect of life. He seems oblivious to the fact that he has an adoring wife (June Squibb), a devoted middle-aged daughter (Dale Dickey) and and a worshipful granddaughter (Audrey P. Scott). Rex is frustrated by his failure »

Paramount Pictures' Michael Bay Film Pain & Gain grossed $7.5 million on Friday to top the charts. The film starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie heads to a $20 million-or-so weekend, claiming little prior to Disney's big boy summer opener Iron Man 3. Supporting cast includes Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson, Rob Corddry, Ken Jeong, Tony Shalhoub, Kurt Angle, William Haze, Bar Paly and Tony Plana. Reviews are here and there for this one, holding a mediocre 57% positive score at Rottentomatoes.com. New Pain and Gain Clip is an Honest Mistake

11 April 2013 2:45 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It’s not easy pulling off the heist of a century when you’re just a bunch of knuckleheads. That basically describes the trio at the center of Michael Bay’s true-ish crime story “Pain and Gain”, about three muscleheads who decide to abduct then force a guy to give up all of his belongings. You know, that old gag. Check out a second clip from the movie, in which our wacky bad guys do wacky things like completely miss the guy they were going to kidnap. Hey, it happens. If you’re a dumbass, that is. Based on the unbelievable true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson, Tony Shalhoub, Anthony Mackie, Rob Corddry, Tony Plana, Bar Paly, and Ken Jeong. »

It doesn’t have battling, transforming robots from outer space or evil aliens trying to enslave all of mankind cause that’s how they roll, but it does have Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie playing a trio of totally clueless meatheads committing crimes in glitzy Miami in the ’90s cause, well, that’s how they roll. So, you know, that’s probably better. Check out a new batch of images from Michael Bay’s true crime story “Pain and Gain”. Or true-ish, anyway. Another Goofy (Red Band) Trailer for Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain

Oh, Michael Bay, did you finally make that one movie that will give you all the respect you’ve been craving? Cause let’s face it, respect don’t come from movies about giant robots from outer space destroying Chicago. But it could very well come from the low-budget (by Bay standards, ahem) “Pain and Gain”, cause this thing looks hilarious. I mean, tongue-in-cheek, chuckle all day hilarious. Take a look at a new Red Band trailer for “Pain and Gain”, which I’m told is based on a true story. Or, true story-ish.
