Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. You’ll find 2015′s answer to Whiplash located somewhere in the stack below. Click on the individual titles below, for the film’s profile.

I generally pay as much attention to the broadcast network development season as I do to the baseball draft. Though the shows that actually survive development are much closer to airing chronologically than most baseball draftees are to the majors, the winnowing process is just as brutal in both cases. On average, a given network will hear 3-400 pitches a year, order scripts for 60-70 of them, make 8-12 pilots and put roughly between a half dozen and a dozen of them on the air. So I’ve usually found development not worth worrying about until shows are actually ordered to series and scheduled. That said, it’s been tough to ignore this fall’s development season, where it seems like every day for the past few weeks, my Twitter feed has blown up a few times an afternoon with news of a familiar movie or TV property being adapted...

It's taken three episodes, but Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) is finally showing real signs of guilt for what he did to Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt). Whether the emotional crisis is enough to fuel a thaw between Nucky and Margaret (Kelly MacDonald) remains to be seen. The two do go on a date—of sorts—but it's not exactly romantic. What We Learned Even Nucky Thompson Can't Turn Down Appointments With Saints: Margaret (Kelly MacDonald) is still hounding Nucky to at least pretend to be a pillar of society, and Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale) is putting equal pressure on Nucky's hootch business. Something's gotta give. Nucky offers Gyp a month's supply of hooch in exchange for backing off...

Akira Akira has stalled as Warner Bros. wants the film's screenplay revamped. Will the $90-million production to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra still be a go? Well, possibly. Variety cites two examples of projects that have been recently put on hold due to budgetary issues, but that haven't necessarily been shut down for good. One is David Dobkin's Arthur & Lancelot. The adventure fantasy's March 15, 2013, release date is now on hold while the studio finds ways to reduce its budget from $135 to $110 million. Kit Harington and Joel Kinnaman have the title roles. The other title is Alex Proyas' Paradise Lost, which will miss its January start date due to budgetary woes. The one box-office name in the project is Bradley Cooper, who is set to play Lucifer. Benjamin Walker is to play Lucifer's nemesis, the Archangel Gabriel, while Camille Belle will play the apple-eating Eve. Akira has a relatively...

Looks like the process of studios scrutinizing spending on films in development is a process that will continue into 2012. Disney put Lone Ranger on hold last year when the budget escalated to over $250m, and Warner Bros. started looking keenly [1] at the budget for Arthur & Lancelot in mid-December. Now the production offices for the live-action Akira have reportedly been closed and the film put on hold while WB figures out how much the film is really going to cost, and decides whether that money will be well-spent. THR [2] reports that the Vancouver production offices are closed and that the film "is being shut down in the face of casting and budgetary issues." Reportedly director Jaume Collet-Serra and producers will spend the next two weeks working on the script to bring the budget down -- note that the budget was already cut down by half [3] when Collet-Serra was first hired [4]. That brought it down below $100m.

There is no such thing as ‘sacred’ anymore. To suggest that any film is inviolable in the modern era is unfortunately not the case, remakes are omnipresent. I completely understand why studios endure the ‘lack of creativity’ insults thrown at them and Hollywood as a whole. Money. A big budget film failing can deal a killer blow to any studio; turning to a ready made fanbase enables them to pretty much ensure a success. Even the fans who are so disgusted at the idea of a remake buy a ticket just to confirm they were right. I know this because I bought a ticket to Let Me In. It is the exact same reason that every half decent young-adult novel with good sales is being adapted.

Bourne fans weren't exactly pleased when writer-director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) revealed that that the Bourne 4 script he was working on — titled Bourne Legacy — will be a "stand-alone project" that wouldn't include the character of Jason Bourne but "a whole new hero," which Gilroy later revealed would be a new agent with the same training as Bourne. Gilroy also explained that he didn't want to replace Matt Damon, who had previously announced that he wouldn't do another Bourne without The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass. Greengrass dropped out of the fourth Bourne in December of 2009. Gilroy maintains that Legacy won't permanently replace Damon, leaving open the possibility of his return.

Universal is reportedly considering a gallery of stars for The Bourne Legacy – to feature neither Matt Damon nor Jason Bourne
The search for an actor to replace Matt Damon in the latest film in the Jason Bourne series has begun, and according to Us reports the casting net is a spectacularly wide one.
Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three Bourne movies and directed 2009's Oscar-winning Michael Clayton, is taking over from Paul Greengrass in the hot seat for The Bourne Legacy. According to Deadline, he is considering Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch and Benjamin Walker. Variety, meanwhile, mentions a mere five possible choices for the role: Gyllenhaal, Maguire, Hedlund, Kitsch and Kellan Lutz.

Well, well and isn't little Margaret Schroeder a quick study when it comes to graft! That look on her face last week when she read Nucky's ledger wasn't horror; it was "ooh, how do I work this angle, and why not get some revenge on Madame Jeunet in the process?" Adjusting for inflation, that "present" she got from Madame would be worth $4,246 in today's dollars. Hey, Margaret, when you tire of Nucky, the mayoral job is opening up in Chicago in 2011: you'd be perfect for it.
There was a lot of betrayal going on this week. Gillian set up Lucky Luciano for Jimmy. Angela's promise of a gallery show apparently hinged upon expanding her "bohemian" ways into a ménage a trois. Jimmy's return means that's a no go so now her work is "derivative". Am I the only one who sort of felt she deserved this for thinking she...

Photo: American Zoetrope This week Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro hits theaters following its May debut at the Cannes Film Festival. I was among the first to see the film back at the end of April and recently had a chance to speak with the Oscar-winning writer and director over the phone from his office at American Zoetrope, his production house that is also set to distribute the film, but it wasn't always planned that way. "We sort of fell into self release without really wanting to," Coppola tells me as the film hits theaters this Thursday, June 11. "It only happened because we didn't particularly want to show the movie until it was finished and we didn't want it to get suddenly released in late November with a bunch of independent films because they have this habit of all coming out at the end of the year so they can...

I'm not the biggest fan of Westerns; in fact the last Western I really, truly loved was The Proposition, which was penned by Nick Cave - yes, that Nick Cave - and it was much more highly stylized than the "classic" Westerns we are familiar with. With El Dorado, Howard Hawks carries out a film that is more along the lines of a traditional Western, and makes it appealing even to a lukewarm Western fan like myself.
El Dorado stars cinematic legends John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, with Wayne exuding cool as effortlessly and nonchalantly as Michael Pitt does creepiness. The two play old friends Cole and J.P, the former being a well-known gunslinger and the latter being the sheriff of the eponymous town. The film begins with Cole stopping by El Dorado for a brief reunion before heading to a ranch to help a man named Bart Jason...

I actually had a chance to see Francis Ford Coppola's new film Tetro already and can tell you I really liked it and hope to catch it again as it makes its way to the Seattle International Film Festival and now you get your first look at the black-and-white feature, which includes various splashes of color throughout. The film, while fictional, is said to have had its origins from memories and emotions of Coppola's early life. It stars Vincent Gallo and newcomer Alden Ehrenreich, whom I can tell you reminds me of a Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Pitt and Emile Hirsch all wrapped in one. Truly, Ehrenreich was fantastic in this pic. The story centers on the bittersweet reunion of two brothers and the secrets surrounding their relationship. Tetro is set to hit theaters on June 11. Check out the trailer directly below.

Warner Home Video announced today the DVD release of Funny Games on June 10. The film itself will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. No extras features have been announced yet and there's no word on a Blu-ray release. Michael Haneke's remake of his own film stars Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, and Michael Pitt. In the film a vacationing family gets an unexpected visit from two deeply disturbed young men. Their idyllic holiday turns nightmarish as they are subjected to unimaginable terrors and struggle to stay alive.

- At this point in time, many of us in the Northern part of the hemisphere want to do away with the slush, snow, drizzle and cough drop season. The good folks from The New York Times "T" Magazine are reminding us of the least appealing feature of the Sundance film festival: the cold.Unknown filmmaker Brody Baker was given access to a slew of stars including Josh Hartnett, Lukas Haas, Josh Lucas, Michael Pitt, Brady Corbett and Saffron Burrows (featured above). The batch of 12-episode films are slowing being unveiled (one per day). While they are of zero interest invididually, I'll wait till the entire set is available and make up my mind whether it is something worth mentioning here on this site in another positing. To feast your eyes on familiar faces with running noses: check it out here. ...

- The 60th Annual DGA Awards have announced those who will be the honored guests at the upcoming dinner distinguishing outstanding directorial achievement in what was a splendid year of eye candy. Notably absent from this year's 5-list is of course David Fincher and his film Zodiac and Joe Wright for Atonement, but for the most part the nominees are a very much deserving pack. The winner will be announced January 26th - an interesting stat: only six times since the DGA Awards began in 1949 has the winner not gone on to win an Academy Award.Prez Michael Apted (from the 7-up films) had this to say about the cream of the cream..."2008 marks the 60th Anniversary of the DGA Awards," said Apted. "We are very proud to have today's five nominees join the illustrious list of directors that have been nominated for directorial excellence in feature filmmaking over the past 59 years.
