Inside track: Emmy race for lead comedy actress

4 July 2009 6:58 PM, PDT | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

All five of last year's Emmy rivals for best comedy actress are back in the race and seem likely to return on July 16: Christina Applegate ("Samantha Who?"), America Ferrera ("Ugly Betty"), Tina Fey ("30 Rock"), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") and Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds"). Since the TV academy is expanding this category to six contenders this year, that means there's room for one more. Don't count out Amy Poehler just because "Parks and Recreation" hasn't scored big with TV critics and Nielsen viewers. Unlike the previous three Emmy derbies, nominees will be chosen by a popular vote of members of the academy's acting branch – and, of course, Poehler is hugely popular. Personally, I'm rooting for her to get in. Poehler told Gold Derby that there will be no "diva clawfest" between her and former "Saturday Night Live" costar Tina Fey (last year's champ) if they both nab noms,

Chicago – The Round-Up is back to provide our loyal readers with synopsis and feature details on a few titles that may have slipped on to DVD or Blu-Ray under your radar but might make the right purchase choice this holiday weekend.

It’s not that these title are any “lesser” than some of the biggies out there (one nearly made $100 million domestically and another is a Mel Brooks classic), but we can’t get around to a full-length review of everything that comes into the HollywoodChicago.com office and we want to keep you as informed as possible.

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” and “Spaceballs” were released on June 16th, 2009.

The Education of Charlie Banks,” “Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Season Two,” and “White Sox Memories” were released on June 30th, 2009.

[DVD Review] Secret Diary of A Call Girl: Season 2

30 June 2009 6:46 AM, PDT | From JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news

In the interest of honesty, I feel obliged to say that I didn’t think that Secret Diary of a Call Girl was going to be very good. All of the advertisements that I’ve seen for it have suggested that it’s here to pick up where Sex and the City (a show I have never had the slightest interest in watching) left off, and, knowing Showtime, I didn’t think that the whole concept was going to be done very tastefully. And I can admit that I was wrong. This show is actually pretty good, which has a great deal to do with the intelligence and sensitivity of the writing and the charisma of lead Billie Piper.

“Belle” is the professional name of Hannah, a very high-class prostitute working in London. Unlike most media depictions of the world’s oldest profession, Belle is a free agent: she sets her clients,

8 June 2009 2:28 AM, PDT | From The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news

Sigourney Weaver'S iconic character Ellen Ripley from the Alien film series has been named the top female in science fiction.

She topped a list of The 25 Women Who Shook Sci-Fi compiled by Totalscifionline.com, with Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, in second place, and Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) third.

From the comic book world, the list features the movie portrayals of Storm and Catwoman and Lynda Carter's iconic 70s TV version of Wonder Woman.

Ripley first appeared in Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), emerging as the sole survivor of the Nostromo's encounter with an acid-blooded xenomorph. The character was originally written as a male role before 20th Century Fox executive Alan Ladd Jr suggested they change the gender to make the protagonist stand out.

Matt McAllister, editor of Totalscifionline.com said: "Ripley is one of cinema's seminal characters. She is strong,

Three former companions of Doctor Who are reportedly to get married in David Tennant's final appearances before he quits the role.

Tennant is to play the Time Lord in three more specials and, according to The Sun, the final story will see Rose (played by Billie Piper) marry the half-human clone of the Doctor in their parallel universe, while Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) will tie the knot with show regular Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke).

Tennant will also appear in two episodes of this summer's new series of spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, when he bursts in on the wedding of his former companion Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen).

Producer Russell T Davies promised the two-parter is "extraordinary, wild and powerfully moving".

He added: "Let's just say that the wedding will be a day for everyone to remember!

Karen Gillan Joins 'Doctor Who'

30 May 2009 9:15 PM, PDT | From CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news

The BBC has revealed that the assistant for the next season of Doctor Who will be relative newcomer Karen Gillan. The 21 year-old actress will star alongside new Doctor Matt Smith when the Tardis returns to BBC One in spring 2010.

Head writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat declared, "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

According to Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales Piers Wenger, "We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt

Meet Doctor Who’s New Scottish Lass, Karen Gillian

30 May 2009 8:13 PM, PDT | From SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news

I’m not the biggest Doctor Who fan out there, but even I know that when the good doctor travels, it’s always with a comely female companion. Or at least, that’s what Billie Piper has taught me. With a new Doctor taking over the time traveling phone booth, the folks at the BBC have decided to give him a new traveling companion as well. Her name is Karen Gillian, a 21-year old Scottish actress who will be accompanying the 26-year old Matt Smith around on his journeys. Says the BBC who announced the casting on Friday: Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales Piers Wenger said, ‘We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special.’ Karen Gillan follows

News: Regeneration Imminent? (Spoilers Ahoy)

18 May 2009 3:41 PM, PDT | From Kasterborous.com | See recent Kasterborous news

io9.com has featured the return of Billie Piper to Doctor Who alongside its daily dose of spoilers and other nonsense, and thrown a heavy sprinkling of Rose and Jackie Tyler photos into the mix. That's right, Camille Coduri is also returning to Doctor Who one last time - and it seems there is more to this particular return than meets the eye. Not only are Jackie and Rose Tyler wandering around the Powell Estate - rumours suggest this takes place in 2005, before the Doctor and Rose ever met...

It's mainstream, it's in the the mainstream media - it will be all over the gossip rags over the next 7 days, and frankly isn't a spoiler for very long. Doctor Who's most popular companion has been snapped alongside the Tenth Doctor. She's back.  Again.  Let's face it - Billie Piper, lovely Billie, was always going to come back for this. No one should blame her for being on hand to say goodbye to the Tenth Doctor in what appears to be very different circumstances to the last...

News: Billie Makes FHM Top 100

1 May 2009 11:28 AM, PDT | From Kasterborous.com | See recent Kasterborous news

Kasterborous campaigned - and while Billie Piper failed to make the Top 10, she certainly made it into FHM's list of the Top 100 Sexiest Women poll for 2009. In fact Billie only made it so far as the Bottom 10 - but the poll was notable for an absence of Voyage of the Damned's Kylie Minogue in the Top 100, especially since her sister Danii made it: 91: Christine Bleakley 92: Billie Piper 93: Ellen Page 94: Evangeline Lilly 95: Rachel Riley 96: Gemma Bissix 97: Dannii Minogue...

News: Tennant vs Pertwee

14 April 2009 6:07 AM, PDT | From Kasterborous.com | See recent Kasterborous news

Comments made by David Tennant on BBC Breakfast News over the Bank Holiday weekend in the run-up to Planet of the Dead have caused a few raised eyebrows, apparently none moreso than Sean Pertwee. While chatting about leaving the show, why he named himself after Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant and what it's like kissing both Billie Piper and Kylie Minogue, Tennant declared his 1970s predecessor Jon Pertwee as "sexless", as well as observing that: "I can't help it if the ladies of the universe are...

News: Snogger Tennant

10 April 2009 11:39 AM, PDT | From Kasterborous.com | See recent Kasterborous news

The tabloids love a bit of "action", and what could be more satisfying for them to see the Doctor and new companion Lady Christina de Souza locking lips in the Easter Doctor Who special Planet of the Dead? Personally I remain green with envy every time David Tennant gets to snog his co-stars (although I'll pass on Jessica Hynes, thanks). How many men can claim to have kissed Kylie, never mind Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and now Michelle Ruan as well? Frankly I'll be glad to see...

The FHM Top 100 Sexiest is underway, and Kasterborous intends to support Billie Piper all the way, promoting the Doctor Who star between now and the end of voting. On Thursday 23 April FHM will reveal who’s made it into this year’s Top 100, and most importantly, who’s won! Billie needs a lot of support in the poll, after finishing at the risible number 94 in 2008. Hopefully this year's showing will be buoyed by our championing of the cause as well as Rose Tyler's return...
