It was one of several projects Tambay included on his Sundance 2012 Film Festival predictions list, although it didn't debut at that festival. But Joshua Sanchez's indie drama Four, an adaptation on an off-Broadway play by Christopher Shinn, will make its world premiere at the upcoming Los Angeles Film Festival next month. Wendell Pierce of The Wire fame, stars in it, alongside Aja Naomi King, Emory Cohen, E.J. Bonilla and Yolanda Ross. It's not the B.B. King feature film that Wendell Pierce is attached to star in (B.B. King And I), but we'll take it for now. First announced at the Berlinale in February, Gfm Films' feature-length blues documentary Bb King: The Life Of Riley, has been sold to a UK distributor G2, for a fall theatrical release. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, the doc's interviewees include Bono, Bruce Willis, and Eric Clapton, as well as footage of King jamming with President Obama just 2 months ago. Director Jon Brewer, who has worked closely with King, shot more than 200 hours of footage for the project, and had this to say in an interview »

The first season of Treme explored the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans. It introduced us to Ladonna (Khandi Alexander), Annie (Lucia Micarelli), Big Chief Albert (Clarke Peters), Antoine (Wendell Pierce), Janette (Kim Dickens), Toni (Melissa Leo), and Davis (Steve Zahn) – ordinary people who were trying to make sense of their lives and communities. The season showed us a culture that refused to let itself get beat down by disaster. The music, food and Indian feathers were just as vivacious as they were before the levies broke. Treme Season 2 is less about the disaster, and more about the new, New Orleans. Times have changed, murder rates are up, but the beating heart and spirit of the Jazz homeland can never die.
For the characters, Treme’s second season is all about new experiences – good and bad. Although many viewers loved the first season, some said that they were always waiting for “something big” to happen. »

Treme star Wendell Pierce is an in-demand actor (he plays trombone man Antoine Baptiste on the HBO show), a man of the stage (currently he’s producing the Broadway run of last year’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Clybourne Park), an activist and now a grocer. As the new proprietor of Sterling Farms supermarket, based in the outskirts of New Orleans, and Sterling Express convenience stores, he and two partners are bringing quality food and fresh products at reasonable prices to an area that’s seen a dearth of accessible supermarkets ever since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. In the storm’s wake, corner stores

FilmDistrict has pushed back Taylor Hackford's Parker to January 25th. Based on the mystery novels by Donald Westlake, Parker stars Jason Statham as the eponymous thief, and co-stars Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Wendell Pierce, Clifton Collins Jr., and Michael Chiklis. The movie was originally set to open on October 12th where it would have faced (and probably lost to) the star-studded The Gangster Squad and the Kevin James comedy Here Comes the Boom. January, long treated as a dumping ground for likely flops, has started to yield surprising returns. Modestly-budgeted movies like Contraband, Underworld Awakening, The Devil Inside, and The Grey all performed well at the box office, and Parker has the potential to do the same. Currently, the film's only competition is the breakdancing flick Battle of the Year: The Dream Team (formerly Planet B) starring Josh Holloway, Laz Alonso, and Josh Peck. [Box Office Mojo] »

You know, this was going to be a snarkier post but then we dug up this set photo of Jason Statham wearing a goddamn cowboy hat, and "Parker" is now our most anticipated movie of 2013. Jason Statham has done a lot things in his career -- most of them variations on the same theme -- but we have never seen him wear a ten gallon hat, and dude pulls it off. If the rest of his warddrobe for "Parker" is this outlandish, we simply can't wait.
Originally slated to arrive on October 12th, FilmDistrict has moved the movie back to January 25, 2013, which might seem like a retreat, but considering R-rated genre fare like "Contraband" and "The Grey" both opened around the same frame this year at number one, it seems like the indie house is hoping to duplicate that success. And there is some pedigree behind this one, with "Ray »

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - The A-listers came out in full force for President Obama's state dinner honoring UK Prime Minister David Cameron Wednesday. The prime minister's wife Samantha Cameron sat next to the President, and Homeland star Damian Lewis sat directly across from her. Lewis' wife Helen McCory and Downtown Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville were also at the table. In addition to Clooney there were a bunch of other Hollywood heavyweights like Harvey Weinstein, who will present a screening of the documentary Bully to teachers and other educators later today. The Wire star Wendell Pierce is opening his own grocery chain.
The actor will team up with business partner James Hatchett and childhood friend Troy Henry to unveil a range of stores called Sterling Farms in his native New Orleans, Louisiana this summer.
The grocery will feature a deli, bakery, and fish counter and also offer a free shuttle to low-income shoppers, who may not have a car.
And Pierce, who has taken time out of his career to help rebuild the area, is proud of his new venture because markets have been slow to return to the city after it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina back in 2005.
He tells the New York Times, "Bringing fresh food into these areas helps create economic growth. But it also helps people understand that there's value in eating better. It's not something that's only available in better neighbourhoods."
In December, the trio opened local convenience store chain Sterling Express, which offers imperishable items. »

Actor Wendell Pierce has plans to open his very own grocery store in his hometown of New Orleans. Along with two business partners, Pierce will be opening a Sterling Farms grocery store in a low-income neighborhood. He says he has plans to open several others soon after.
Back in December, Pierce opened a Sterling Express, a convenience store with a similar mission that sells fresh produce, salad, as well as the convenience store usuals such as chips and soda.
"Bringing fresh food into these areas helps create economic growth," the Treme actor said. "But it also helps people understand that there's value in eating better. It's not something that's only available in a better neighborhood."
Sterling Farms will be fully equipped with a deli and bakery, as well as a seafood counter. Since it will cater to low-income shoppers, the store will offer a shuttle to customers who spend more »

Those perplexed by the complicated meanderings of Luck's first episode were probably losing the will to watch after the second. Which shows have tested your viewing patience?
As Luck neared the end of its second episode on Sky Atlantic last Saturday, with Nick Nolte still sitting on buckets muttering and Dustin Hoffman no closer to explaining his complicated revenge, I found myself wondering how long people would be prepared to stick with the show.
Writer David Milch has talked about his script as a contract between viewer and creator, in which the audience should meet him halfway. But while there's no doubting the lavish detail of his world, there is also something wilfully perverse about the way in which he spent the second episode delving into an insanely overcomplicated con by trainer Turo Escalante, the man one Us reviewer branded "the most indecipherable character in primetime history".

Samuel L. Jackson has led tributes to actor Dick Anthony Williams, who died at the age of 73 last week.
Williams appeared in several movies, including Edward Scissorhands, The Jerk and Spike Lee's drama Mo' Better Blues.
He also starred in a string of Broadway shows, and his turn in What the Wine-Sellers Buy won him the 1974 Drama Desk Award, but he will perhaps be best remembered for his role as 'pretty Tony' in 1973 blaxploitation film The Mack.
In a post on Twitter.com, Jackson writes, "Rip, Dick Anthony Williams! Truly an Acting Muttuhf**Kuh! Pretty Tony, to those who know!"
The Wire star Wendell Pierce adds, "An actor who embodied what a journeyman artist is: persistent, innovative, and transcendent, Dick Anthony Williams has died. Rip."
Williams' cause of death is unknown as WENN went to press. »

Sean Guard celebrates Black History Month with a selection of acclaimed African American films...
In the light and celebration of Black History Month, I’ve put together a small collection from the vast library of highly-acclaimed African American films. From Cicely Tyson to Denzel Washington to Spike Lee, I’ve included some of the classic films and miniseries that have come to contribute to my generation and others’ education of the struggles and contributions of Blacks in the past and present. Now, seeing as how there are tons of film to go over that fit rather easily into this category, this assemblage of titles are only a tip of the Black iceberg.
Native Son (1951)
Based on the novel by Richard Wright, this film focuses on a young black poverty stricken man living in 1930s Chicago. He takes a job as a chauffeur to a white family, which takes a turn »
