Universal’s Tom Cruise actioner “American Made” has taken off with a moderate $960,000 on Thursday night.

American Made” will expand to 3,023 locations on Friday and has been forecast to land in the $13 million to $15 million range this weekend. Cruise stars as a commercial airline pilot recruited by the CIA to fly reconnaissance missions over South America. He then becomes involved with a cartel and begins smuggling drugs and guns.

The film reunites Cruise with “Edge of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman. Critical support has been impressive, earning the film an 86% “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sony’s “Flatliners” remake is also opening this weekend at 2,552 venues amid modest expectations in the $8 million range.

Fox’s second weekend of the spy comedy “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” has been pegged to repeat as the winner with around $19 million at 4,038 locations. New Line’s fourth weekend of “It” may edge out “American Made” for second place.

From Clueless to Tarantino: why the 90s was Hollywood’s fairytale decade

28 September 2017 10:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Smart, self-aware and groundbreaking, the cinema of the 1990s is worth getting nostalgic over. No wonder studios are so keen to resurrect it

Related: Pulp Fiction to Magnolia: the best films of the 90s – as chosen by critics

Cinema is once again mining its recent past for hits. Joel Schumacher’s 1990 medic-goth thriller Flatliners is the latest cult classic to be remade for a contemporary audience. Almost three decades on, the original – in which a group of medical students deliberately kill and then revive themselves in order to report back on the afterlife – resembles in parts a crossover episode between Buffy and Holby City. But in the shiny 2017 sequel, the gritty, steamy streets have been replaced by brightly lit high-rises, its rudimentary computers have been given an upgrade, and the astonishing amount of angular yet floppy hair sported by Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Billy Baldwin has been closely cropped for more austere times. »

Michael Douglas, Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev Celebrate Life at ‘Flatliners’ Premiere

28 September 2017 11:28 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Michael Douglas was provided belated birthday wishes as he made his way down the carpet Wednesday at the premiere of “Flatliners.”

“Did you know that Monday was this man’s 39th birthday? He looks great,” said Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman, before he gave the film’s producer a big hug outside of the Ace Theater.

The Los Angeles premiere additionally marked a special occasion for Douglas since he also produced the original 1990 film, which starred Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kiefer Sutherland. The updated version of the thriller, penned by Ben Ripley, features Ellen PageNina DobrevDiego LunaKiersey Clemons, and James Norton.

Exclusive: Beau Mirchoff Talks 'Flatliners' and His Real Near-Death Experience: I Thought 'This Is It'

28 September 2017 8:25 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

You can call it Beau 2.0, but Beau Mirchoff won't.

The 28-year-old actor is known to many fans from MTV's high school comedy, Awkward, but his latest role is no Matty McKibben. In the year since Awkward's series finale, Mirchoff has graduated from high school to med school, with the upcoming film Flatliners

"I don't think I can play high school anymore, which is a good thing," Mirchoff told Et over the phone, insisting that he doesn't consider this the next chapter of his career. "I don't really look at it that way, [but] I feel like I've been evolving since Awkward.

The actor plays Brad, a "naive" medical student in Flatliners, a reimagining of the 1990 film of the same name, which centers on a group of students who conduct experiments trying to produce near-death experiences.

Tom Cruise’s ‘American Made’ Battles ‘Kingsman 2,’ ‘It’ at Weekend Box Office

27 September 2017 3:05 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Tom Cruise has arrived to cap a record September at the box office. But it won’t end with a bang.

He’s starring in this weekend’s widest launch, Universal’s “American Made,” which is expected to land in the low to mid-teens at 3,023 locations. While that’s certainly not ideal for an action feature with a major movie star attached, the film’s finances are partially bolstered by having already earned more than $60 million overseas. Still, there’s a good chance that it will be overshadowed by the recent string of R-rated releases including “It” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” »

A Future of ‘Flatliners’: 5 Bad ’90s Movies That Hollywood Should Remake for Millennials

26 September 2017 12:14 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This Friday will see the release of a horror film called “Flatliners,” a movie title that should be instantly familiar to anyone who spent the ’90s trawling the shelves of their local video store in search of something — anything — to watch that weekend. Perhaps best remembered as the crusty VHS that was always sandwiched between “The Fisher King” and “Fried Green Tomatoes,” the original “Flatliners” was an asinine but atmospheric psychological horror thing that starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and Billy Baldwin as foolhardy med students who start experimenting with life after death. Nothing goes wrong and they all live happily ever after.

Now, perhaps motivated by the fact that the mere act of making a movie in 2017 feels like an experiment with life after death, Hollywood is about to unleash a remake starring Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, »

In Flatliners, five medical students decide to test the boundaries of life and what comes after. The reboot/sequel to the original 1990 feature offers up a terrific cast including Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, Kiersey Clemons and James Norton. It also features one of the original stars, Keifer Sutherland, who this time plays one of their instructors. One of my favorite things about this film is the cast. The five actors have incredible chemistry, so when their near death experiences... Read More »

Another year of Tiff came to a close this weekend, and by all accounts it was another resounding success. A few final premieres lit up Toronto, and the highly coveted (and often highly predictive for further awards contention) People’s Choice awards were announced. Ellen Page and Kate Mara were in attendance for the premiere of My Days of Mercy, which tells the story of two women on opposite sides of a criminal case who fall in love. While Tiff was inevitably coming to a close, Halifax native Ellen Page made sure to step out during Canada's biggest film festival.  The closing night film of Tiff was C'est la vie, a French film about the staff's role »
