Biography

Sean Phillips has created memorable images in virtually every motion picture format—from television to features to IMAX™ 3D. Nearly every week for the last eleven years at least one film that he directed, photographed or supervised visual effects for has been on Variety’s box office chart. He is one of the most experienced 3D filmmakers working in the world today.

He has directed and photographed national and international commercials for General Foods, Ameritech, Washington Mutual, Game Boy, Coors Beer, ASICS Shoes, Acura, and Samsung Electronics. He directed the award winning 3-D narrative film "Ahead of Time" for Sony Pictures ImageWorks, and its sequel, "Time Out."

Phillips also directed "Technopia," a computer animated adventure film that became the #1 smash hit of the Taijon World Expo. Technopia has won Imagina and Telly Awards, and by popular demand plays permanently at the Expo site.

He directed and photographed the opening stop-motion King Kong VFX sequence for Ben Burtt’s Imax film "Special Effects," which received an Academy Award nomination.

He also supervised the animated visual effects for "T. Rex, Back to the Cretaceous" featuring photo-real 3D dinosaurs seven stories tall. Critics from The New York Times to Variety agreed that T. Rex successfully took "Jurassic Park" quality dinosaurs into 3D with the stunning resolution of the IMAX™ format.

Sean is the recipient of the Kodak Vision Award for Cinematography and two Achievement awards from the Visual Effects Society.

He shot and created visual effects for R.L. Stine’s "Haunted Lighthouse 4D," a Busch Entertainment theme park attraction for "Gremlins" director Joe Dante. He also photographed and supervised the visual effects for Tom Hank’s "Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon;" and "Bugs!," which won the Giant Screen Cinema Association Award for Best Cinematography. "Bugs!" is one of the highest grossing British documentaries of all time.

Sean directed "Sea Monsters," an award winning 3-D IMAX film for National Geographic. To date it has grossed over $50,000,000 worldwide. He recently finished another 3D IMAX film for National Geographic, "Mysteries of the Unseen World."
