The Playlist Soundtrack Series Revisited: Wes Anderson

In 2006, before I started The Playlist film blog, out of boredom I began what I called the The Playlist Soundtrack Series. A sort of "If I Were _______ (insert filmmaker's name here)" type thing. The concept was naive and simple: choose a handful of music-savvy filmmakers whose work I admired and create imaginary soundtracks for movies they hadn't made, based on their taste and music they might conceivably use one day. It began as nothing more than a fun exercise for me, as I had time on my hands back then.

Eventually, I had amassed a half a dozen of these soundtracks in various states of completion, and to host them somewhere I started The Playlist blog in 2007. It then became a place to discuss music in film, soundtracks, etc., and when that topic was outgrown slightly (after a while you tend to hit all the classic film and soundtrack bases »

Picking your favorite Akira Kurosawa film is a tricky choice for any movie fan. From "Rashomon" to "Ran," the great Japanese filmmaker, one of the most beloved and influential directors of all time, knocked out a string of classics in a career that lasted well over 40 years. But more often than not, at the top of the list for Kurosawa fans is "The Seven Samurai," the 1954 samurai epic that redefined the action movie for generations.

Following six samurai (and one pretender, iconically played by Toshiro Mifune) who are recruited by a village of farmers to protect them from bandits, it remains to this day one of the most stirring, thrilling adventures in cinema history, and landed Kurosawa firmly on the map in international cinema. Wilson Phillips (Wendy Phillips, Carnie Wilson & Chynna Phillips) are back in the spotlight

Believe it or not, it's been 22 years since the Wilson Phillips hit song "Hold On" topped the charts and brought the offspring of members of The Mamas and the Papas and The Beach Boys - Chynna Phillips, Wendy Phillips and Carnie Wilson - to the pop culture limelight. And while they've popped up here and there over the years, the past twelve months has see a major resurgence for the trio.

First, the ladies and their song "Hold On" figured prominently in the climax of last summer's hit film Bridesmaids. Then, Chynna went on to be a contestant last fall on ABC's popular Dancing With The Stars.
