Children Of The Corn (1984) The Arrow Blu Review

Review by Roger Carpenter

Stephen King films can be a mixed bag. For every really good film adaptation (Carrie; The Shining; Misery) there’s a bad one (Maximum Overdrive; Graveyard Shift; The Dark Tower). There are also a whole slew of Stephen King films that fall somewhere in the middle. I think Children of the Corn is one of the films that falls squarely in the middle of the pack.

There are some real strengths in the film. It has some genuine star quality, with soon-to-be action star Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) and TV heartthrob Peter Horton (Thirtysomething) starring as married couple Burt and Vicky, who become stranded in a town filled only with murderous, brainwashed children. The children are led by Isaac (John Franklin), who has a direct connection with an evil entity the children worship called He Who Walks Behind the Rows, and Malachai (Courtney Gains), Isaac’s mean-spirited enforcer.

Remembering The Awesome 80s and 90s Work of John Philbin

He’s definitely one of those actors you see but you don’t see all the time. He’s great at supporting and standing out as one of the more important characters, and he is a memorable character in his own right. A lot of people might not know who he is but that’s largely because a good many millennials might think that the latest version of Point Break is the first and only and Return of the Living Dead is an old film that doesn’t warrant their attention. If you have half a chance though it’d be worth it to see the

Blu-ray Review: The Return Of The Living Dead Collector’s Edition

It’s hard to believe that the same year George A. Romero released Day of the Dead, the ultra-gory, ultra-bleak conclusion of the trilogy he began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, writer/director Dan O’Bannon was spinning Romero’s original classic into a totally new direction with The Return of the Living Dead. Whereas Romero’s film is dark and sober, Return is pure punk rock anarchy—a horror comedy that successfully manages to be equal parts horror and comedy while introducing one of the most significant elements into the zombie mythos since Romero first made them flesh-eaters 17 years earlier.

The film’s ingenious premise—which was “meta” before being meta was really a thing—is that the events of the original Night of the Living Dead really did take place and were covered up, with the zombies locked into airtight drums and left in the basement of a medical supply facility.

Synopsis:

When a deadly gas is released at a medical supply warehouse, the dead are re-animated and immediately seek out their favourite food supply - brains.

Cinema audiences have been infected by the zombie virus in countless occasions. George A. Romero really fired the zombie sub-genre into the forefront of horror cinema. The 80s in particular, coinciding with the VHS boom, was bloated with films about flesh hungry zombies. One of the more successful films, and indeed film series, to step out of the Romero shadow was The Return of the Living Dead. This, the first of three films, was a cult hit and a film that continues to garner fans who finally get around to
