Tatiana Maslany to Bellamy Young: Why Do Emmys Dismiss Great Acting in Genres and Soaps?

10 July 2014 11:27 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With every Emmy announcement, there are the standard complaints about snubs. In such a fabulous year, it’s inevitable that certain things will get overlooked. Yet in the drama acting categories, there were some frustrating oversights, likely due to the fact that the shows weren’t deemed as Important with a capital I as others.

While Kerry Washington was recognized again in the lead actress category for her work on “Scandal” and respected vets Kate Burton and Joe Morton were nominated in the guest categories, it’s a shame many of Washington’s co-stars were overlooked in the supporting categories. Bellamy Young, who plays First Lady Mellie Grant, is one of the great success stories of the season. Mellie has gone from three lines in the “Scandal” pilot to the most vilified character on the show to one of the most beloved in the space of three seasons. The Critic »

Bells is the belle of the ball.

Bellamy Young, who plays Scandal‘s First Lady Mellie Grant, has converted her first-ever acting nomination into a deserved win, at this year’s Critics’ Choice Television Awards – and against stiff competition.

“What’s awesome, I feel, is that I am alive and working in a time when women are increasingly being allowed to be complicated — to be morally ambiguous, to be empowered and emancipated and unpredictable,” the actress shared with TVLine on the eve of her momentous night. This story originally appeared in EmmyWrap: Comedy/Drama/Actors. Kerry Washington may be the star, but ABC's “Scandal” makes lots of room for the men who surround her political operative, Olivia Pope. TheWrap talked to four of them: Tony Goldwyn, who plays President Fitzgerald (“Fitz”) Thomas Grant; Jeff Perry, as White House chief of staff Cyrus Beene; Dan Bucatinsky as Cyrus’ husband, former journalist James Novak; and Joe Morton as Olivia's father, black ops commander Rowan Pope. The men discussed their unique bond, the special attention they receive from the show's fans and their secrets to delivering show creator Shonda Rhimes’ famous monologues. »

The third season of "Scandal" brought the death of a couple of key characters and series stars Bellamy Young (Mellie Grant) and Jeff Perry (Cyrus Beene) are feeling the loss of their castmates.

"It hurts, honestly," Jeff told Access Hollywood at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival in Monaco, when asked what it will be like filming Season 4 without Dan Bucatinsky (James Novak) and Columbus Short (Harrison Wright). "It's a really tight group.

If I Had An Emmy Ballot 2014: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

15 June 2014 10:30 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The Television Academy of Arts & Sciences released this year's Emmy ballots on Monday. Now that the ballots are out, it's time for our annual two-pronged experiment, in which Dan tries to predict the likeliest nominees in each major category, while I pretend that I'm an actually TV Academy member and pick the six nominees that would make me the happiest. We are, as always, playing by the Emmy rules, which means we can't argue for someone who didn't submit themselves (say, Alan Cumming for "The Good Wife"), can't move someone from lead to supporting or vice versa, and can't declare that "True Detective" is a miniseries and therefore clear more room in the drama categories. I'm also obviously limited by what I watched and what I haven't. I think I saw maybe three episodes of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" this season, for instance, and while I like the show a lot, »

Restoring our faith in humanity, Fox has cancelled the mean spirited I Want to Marry “Harry” as well as the improv show Riot. The remaining episodes of “Harry” will be made available online, while Fox says it will eventually find a new time slot to air Riot.

The Comeback co-creator Michael Patrick King talked with EW about the cult comedy’s new season. “Valerie does get in the spotlight, which is what she always reached for, but we found a unique way of telling the story about what can happen when you get something you want.”

ABC Family’s new drama Chasing Life has booked Ed Asner and Marion Ross for guest roles, according to The Hollywood Reporter. They’ll play the grandparents of lead character April.

Joe Morton is a part of the cast of the upcoming TNT drama Proof but that doesn’t mean he’ll be gone from Scandal. »

Spoiler Alert — The Most Shocking Killings on Cable TV

3 June 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Scandal (Season 3, ep. 313 “No Sun on Horizon”)

The series provided one of the biggest cliffhangers of the season when Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) was seen pointing a gun and firing, shooting either James Novak (Dan Bucatinsky) or David Rosen (Joshua Malina). The next week we learned it was fan favorite (and Emmy winner) James who took the bullet, and his death was made to look like a carjacking. But it also provided one of the best episodes of the season, telling the complicated love story between James and Cyrus (Jeff Perry) from their first meeting.

Walking Dead (Season 4, ep. 14 “The Grove”)

A mercy killing homage to “Of Mice and Men,” a young girl who has lost her mind during the zombie apocalypse and killed her baby sister is eventually put down. Although by no means graphic, given

the victim and the fact that she was so young, it was startling. »

When Fake DC and Real DC Collide

3 May 2014 12:21 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

The White House Correspondents' Dinner has brought out Washington DC's political elite - plus the actors who play them on TV. Each year, famous faces from Hollywood head to the nation's capital for the event, with media outlets inviting celebrities to join them for the banquet. For some of those stars, it's an opportunity to dive into the world they re-create on screen, and last year's event included appearances from the casts of House of Cards ,Veep, and Scandal. After much of the Scandal cast spent Friday night celebrating into the early hours of Saturday, we had to ask them: who's the biggest partyer of the group? Scott Foley had a quick answer: "Katie Lowes, by far - she's the youngest." Katie, who plays Quinn Perkins on the show, said she's also found plenty of time for sightseeing. She told us, "I keep looking at the city through the eyes of Scandal. »

Both audiences and actors were left shocked by the "Scandal" season finale - including series star Jeff Perry, who plays the often nefarious Cyrus Beene.

“Scandal” Finale Recap: “The Price of Free and Fair Elections”

18 April 2014 7:29 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Season finale time! Wow that entire season just flew by! Are you ready to dive into the twisted finale’s many twists?

We open on a split screen right out of a 70s conspiracy thriller, with the bomb on one side and the funeral on the other.

Meanwhile, back at the White House, Cyrus (Jeff Perry) is still stalling with Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) to keep him away from the funeral, all, “Practice your eulogy one more time … only this time with a Spanish accent.”

And then, quite remarkably, Cyrus appears to have a change of heart and begins to tell Fitz about the bomb. Whether or not this redeems the character is up to debate. I’m going with redemption because I want to go back to sort of liking the guy, even if he’s pretty despicable.

Jake (Scott Foley) and David (Joshua Malina) clearly fall into the Cyrus is unredeemable camp, »

All the Ways Scandal Has Hidden Kerry Washington's Baby Bump, by the Numbers

18 April 2014 5:50 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Every half season of Scandal has its own main scandal: the murder of Amanda Tanner, the election rigging in Ohio, the existence of shadowy CIA squad B613. This spring's abbreviated string of episodes has nominally been centered on the reappearance of Olivia Pope's mother, but true Scandal fans know that that's a false-flag operation. The real scandal at the heart of the spring's half-season is the disappearance of star Kerry Washington's ever-growing baby bump, which the show's producers have attempted to hide with the worst cover-up the show has ever seen. Don't believe us? Here's the evidence, by the numbers. »

Fox is giving up on its Saturday night animated line-up, Broadcasting & Cable reported. While the younger viewers the animated block aimed for never showed, an additional issue was that Fox affiliates were frustrated by the number of complaint calls the crude humor inspired. The studio behind the Animation Domination High Def block will continue to create programming but will focus on the web.

Bret Harrison has joined the cast of the ABC drama series Astronaut Wives Club, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He’ll play the “hotshot young gun” husband of a character played by Odette Annable, who previously starred in Breaking In with Harrison.

It’s been noted elsewhere but now it’s Comcast who is saying that giving viewers a chance to bingewatch a show can help it draw new viewers who will watch new episodes as they air.

17 April 2014 9:00 PM, PDT | Uinterview | See recent Uinterview news »

Rowan showed his true colors, killing Fitz’s son, Jerry, to manipulate the reinstitution of B-13, and that was just one of the game changing twists in Scandal’s season 3 finale, “The Price of Free and Fair Election.”

“The Price of Free and Fair Election” began with Cyrus (Jeff Perry) listening to Fitz’s (Tony Goldwyn) eulogy for Senator Hightower in the Oval Office, while the bomb hidden underneath the church ticks away. Just as Cyrus is about to crack and tell Fitz about the bomb, Jake (Scott Foley) storms in and spills the beans. The church is evacuated just as the bomb goes off, leaving bystanders injured. One person not injured in the blast is Sally Langston (Kate Burton), who goes into campaign mode, helping the wounded in front of the news cameras and giving a rousing speech in front of the wreckage.
