Next week, this year's Final Destination 5 makes its DVD and Blu-ray debut and, in anticipation of this release, we felt it was time to look back at the creation of that lucrative palette of gore and death called the Final Destination franchise with the man who kicked it all off, Jeffrey Reddick.
The screenwriter landed on the horror scene with 2000's Final Destination, a film that - at the time - sprung from the teen horror boom, yet offered a refreshing deviation from the masked slasher/body count formula. His contributions to the franchised waned over the subsequent installments, however, as we learn, he has always been just a phone call away from the series' producer, Craig Perry, for advice and to give his blessing.
Head inside for an exclusive chat with Reddick about Final Destination and its latest entry.

Naturally Jim (Jason Biggs) is up to his old sock tricks again, only this time he's got a laptop ... and a wife, and kids. So who's going to bust into the room on Jim this time around? Perhaps the first trailer will reveal that gag, along with what's in store for some of the other characters from the original. In an article in USA Today, producers Chris Moore and Craig Perry admit that it wasn't easy getting the entire gang back together, especially since some of them aren't even acting anymore. Currently the film has received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, and the question of the day seems to be - will there be a 6th part? Like it or not, the Final Destination series is alive and kicking for the foreseeable future. Originally planned for conclusion with the fourth film, a box-office take of $186 million worldwide ensured there were plenty more creative, grizzly deaths to come. As expected, we have this past weekend's Final Destination 5. Opening to a solid $18.4 million, we think death will be keeping plenty busy. Rumors of Final Destination 6 and 7 shooting back-to-back are already swirling and, if they're smart, producer Craig Perry and Warner Bros./New Line will be making no similar claims of a conclusion until they've milked this cash cow of death for all she's worth. Today we've decided to throw our creative »

Final Destination 5 is a huge improvement on the "flat" fourth film, according to its producer. The fifth instalment in the series follows the aftermath of a suspension bridge collapse, which leaves its survivors battling against Death itself. It stars Nicholas D'Agosto, Emma Bell, David Koechner and returning horror veteran Tony Todd. Producer Craig Perry told Heat Vision: "After the fourth one, despite its success, we realised it wasn't really everything the fans had wanted, and in some ways it wasn't really everything that we had wanted it to be. So we knew that we had to bring new blood and bring in fresh people that would ask questions. "So Erick Heiser was brought on board as a writer, because we knew he was really fast and he was a huge fan of the franchise and he understands the genre. "And what we did with the (more) »

In this fourth and final installment of our Final Destination 5 interview series, Dread Central gets an opportunity to chat with the madmen behind all the mayhem: longtime Final Destination producer Craig Perry and franchise newcomers director Steven Quale and writer Eric Heisserer.
With two thirds of the group being newbies to the world of Final Destination, we asked Heisserer and Quale what attracted them to Part Five of the highly-popular horror series.
"I came into Part Five fresh, you know, as this was my first at bat for Final Destination, and I definitely came in as a fan of the first movie," explained Heisserer. "I talked with Craig and Steve about what I felt was important to have included in order to respect the core of what makes the Final Destination movies so entertaining."
"Then I told them I wanted to add something new to the formula and create »

Since Final Destination 5 is doing its damnedest to wash away the bad memory of the last installment (and for our own Heather Wixson it has), we thought that you might be interested in what some of the other critics are saying about the movie.
In case you haven't been reading Dread Central religiously (and shame on you if you haven't), Final Destination 5 stars Nicholas D'Agosto, Emma Bell, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P.J. Byrne, and Ellen Wroe as well as Tony Todd, Courtney B. Vance and David Koechner. Steven Quale directed from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer. Craig Perry provided producing duties.
In her Dread Central review of Final Destination 5, Heather said that:
"Final Destination 5 is not only gruesomely entertaining, but it has managed to breathe new life into the franchise, making a huge fan out of me all over again."
She's not alone. »

Don't think it's possible to humanize an oversexed meathead of a manchild? American Reunion's writer Craig Perry thinks there's hope – and in a recent interview with Box Office Magazine, the American Pie and Final Destination producer revealed his team has "made a great effort to continue to have Stifler be a human being." If you're not sure what sounds stranger – the fact that they're actually making another film in this played-out series, or that people would possibly want to see this jerky character become less of a tool (a cliché that every raunchy comedy needs?) – read on. Perry is reassuring Pie fans that Seann William Scott's character " … can still be Stifler, but he has to have something that...

Final Destination 5 opens in theaters this weekend and this fifth instillation hopes to revitalize the franchise with new rules, fresh characters and more than one twist that will tickle some fans as they pick up the clues and the breadcrumbs along the way — while others will be screaming with laughter as they realize where the train is headed.
We had the chance to sit down with Final Destination franchise creator and producer Craig Perry at the Los Angeles press event for the film, to talk about breathing life into a series many thought was dead after The Final Destination, the shifting rules of the game vs. the rules that never change, and finally, the science of making death funny.
We paused to consider whether or not I should be concerned about latent sociopathic tendencies ...

Almost all of the original American Pie gang is back for American Reunion -- even Milf Guy Number 2 himself, John Cho -- but producer Craig Perry admits it took a while for some of the cast to get over what the series had become: "As much as you say that the people maybe wanted to put that behind them, age and distance have made them realize that it's their legacy, and you can either disavow it or embrace it and be happy," he tells Box Office Magazine. However, Perry promises, Stifler will be more of a human being this time around. Wait a minute -- Stifler, the buffoon who ingests all manner of disgusting crap accidentally for our entertainment, a fully-fleshed out character? What fun is that? [Box Office Magazine] »

You can't cheat death and in Final Destination 5 death is present as ever. During a bus ride to a corporate retreat, Sam (Nicholas D'Agosto) has a premonition in which he and his friends die when a bridge collapse. When his vision ends he helps them reach safety and avoid death. They were never supposed to survive and in a terrifying race against time the group tries to discover a way to escape their death. I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Director Steven Quale, producer Craig Perry, and writer Eric Heisserer about their approach on the fifth installment and how they tried to bring it back to the uniqueness of the first film. Steven also elaborated on how he brought a fresh new approach by focusing on the suspense leading up to the deaths and about shooting in 3-D and how he helped pioneer that medium. »
