Zombie fans among us should appreciate The Horde; however, if The Foywonder's recent tweet is any indication, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus may not be a shiny present from Santa after all.

For the gamers out there, your early Xmas present just arrived in the form of a downloadable Dead Space 2 (watch trailer) demo arriving today on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

This week's new films

17 September 2010 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Winter's Bone (15)

(Debra Granik, 2010, Us) Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan. 100 mins

What No Country For Old Men did for west Texas, this striking landscape thriller does for Missouri's Ozark mountains. This is no country for poor women: an insular rural community clouded by drugs and patriarchy where they do things their way. So when Ree learns her father's skipped bail, and the family home was his security, she must ask difficult questions in dangerous places – chiefly among her extended outlaw family. Tough suspense, documentary-like observation and character drama are perfectly balanced.

I'm Still Here (15)

(Casey Affleck, 2010, Us) Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Combs, Anthony Langdon. 107 mins

What was Joaquin thinking? This film won't clear that up, but it at least shows you what he was doing: taking drugs, falling out with friends and the movie biz, rapping badly and descending into mumbling incoherence – apparently.

The Other Guys (12A)

(Adam McKay, 2010, Us) Will Ferrell, »

The Horde (2009) Movie Review No. 2

29 August 2010 9:29 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

The new wave of French horror marches on relentlessly with “The Horde”, a fast paced zombie thriller which marks the debut of writer directors Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher. Having won Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography at the 2010 Fantasporto International Film Festival, the film has been building up a fair amount of buzz as a superior example of the post “28 Days Later” sprinting ghoul apocalyptic subgenre. With a vaguely recognisable cast that includes the likes of Claude Perron (“Amelie”), Eriq Ebouaney (“Transporter 3”), Aurelien Récoing (“Intimate Enemies”) and Doudou Masta (“Arthur and the Minimoys”), the film keeps the brutal action coming thick and fast, with Dahan and Rocher aiming for a hard boiled edge in the style of classic John Carpenter. The plot is neatly streamlined, and quickly gets down to business as a bunch of cops break into an abandoned high rise apartment block where a gang of drug dealers are hiding out, »

In the scene, French policewoman Aurore (played quite well by actress Claude Perron) finds herself locked in mortal combat with a female zombie. The battle takes place in a kitchen of a run down social housing project, and Aurore seizes every possible advantage she can in the fight by employing the use of surrounding instruments; which is a wordy way of saying, "She kicks her zombie ass!"

La Horde tells the story of a collection of crooks and cops fighting to survive during the absolutely imminent zombie apocalypse. Check out the clip, and read the full review here!

La Horde (The Horde) (2009)

12 August 2010 4:17 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by: Yannick Dahan, Benjamin Rocher

Written by: Arnaud Bordas, Yannick Dahan, Stéphane Moïssakis, Nicolas Peufaillit, Benjamin Rocher

Cast: Claude Perron, Jean-Pierre Martins, Eriq Ebouaney, Aurélien Recoing, Doudou Masta, Antoine Oppenheim, Jo Prestia, Yves Pignot, Adam Pengsawang, Sébastien Peres, Laurent Demianoff, Stéphane Orsolani

It's an unwritten rule in zombie film making that the beginning of the film is just a day in the life. Films which follow this pattern begin with people going about their various petty affairs, going to work, getting groceries, scratching themselves, and all the other common activities that make up humdrum existence. It's refreshing, then, that a film has finally been made which captures a scenario wherein the zombie apocalypse crashes down upon a completely unrelated drama.
