With a new Grammy ceremony coming on January 31, a few records are poised to be broken. Here are four artists looking to make a splash and cement themselves even more in Grammy history than they already are.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: R&b album races include tough match-up between H.E.R., Jon Batiste, and Jazmine Sullivan Tony Bennett
This pop standards legend has a couple of records he could break due to his multiple nominations for his Lady Gaga collaboration album, “Love For Sale.” If Bennett wins any category come January, he will become the second oldest person to ever win a Grammy, at 95 years and 181 days. The current record is held by Pinetop Perkins, who won nearing 98-years-old. Furthermore, if Bennett wins one (or both) of his general field nominations, he will be the oldest person ever to win a general field award. He’s already the oldest person ever to be nominated in those categories.

Scott Rosenbaum’s documentary profiling three legendary blues musicians arrives too late. The film chronicles the lives and careers of Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, who all passed away in 2011. That, as well as the onscreen interviews with deceased musicians such as Gregg Allman and Johnny Winter, lends an undeniable elegiac quality to Sidemen: Long Road to Glory. The film should prove catnip to music lovers, especially blues fans.
None of the three subjects are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but as the film makes abundantly clear, they should be. Sumlin was a...

Oftentimes, the best and brightest of our musical talent never get to take center stage as an adoring crowd cheers them to glory. Some of the industry's most talented players happily occupy backstage roles, studio slots or, in the case of the subjects of Scott Rosenbaum's SXSW premiere "Sidemen - Long Road to Glory," careers as sidemen. Rosenbaum's new documentary focuses on some of American music's most skilled (and most unheralded) stars, so-called "sidemen" Pinetop Perkins, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Hubert Sumlin, lovingly bringing the three men's individual and collective stories to the big screen in a toe-tapping, eye-opening new feature. Blues singer, guitarist, and pianist Ann Rabson died Wednesday after a battle with cancer, the Washington Post reports. The musician, best known for co-founding Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women, was 67-years-old.
Rabson was born in New York City, but raised in Ohio. At the age of 17, she was given her first guitar by her father. When asked about her chosen genre, Rabson said, "Blues speaks to me directly," explaining, "It wasn't a choice. I was drawn to it naturally, sort of like a sheepdog with sheep."
Friend and producer Bruce Iglauer remembered Rabson as a "delightful, smart, and funny person," in a statement, saying, "We were blessed to have known her."
Rabson continued to perform over the last few years, even recording with Ani Difranco, and blues legend Pinetop Perkins. Though Saffire disbanded in 2009, Rabson also recorded solo material, with her last album, "Not Alone," releasing in 2012.

Dave Grohl drew a lot of attention with his acceptance speech/rant for Best Rock Performance at the Grammys on Sunday, with many (us included) noting the subtle swipe at electronic dance music. Now, Grohl is back with a second rant to clarify the real meaning behind what he said with a public statement.
Here we go!
Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! Seacrest! Where do I begin?? Chillin' with Lil' Wayne...meeting Cyndi Lauper's adorable mother...the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet.....much too much to recap. It's really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there's one thing that I remember Very clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance...and then saying this: "To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what's important.

On Grammy night, Foo Fighter frontman Dave Grohl made his distaste for computer-assisted music clear. Or so we thought. Now, in a new statement, Grohl heartily apologizes for giving the impression that he's not a fan of electronica, hip-hop and basically anyone else who might have been offended.
Here's what Grohl said last Sunday (Feb. 12):
"To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what's important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do... It's not about being perfect, it's not about sounding absolutely correct, it's not about what goes on in a computer. It's about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head]."

Midway through his Mvp-like performance at Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards — a tour de force that included wearing a Slayer T-shirt, engaging in a lengthy guitar duel with Bruce Springsteen and inadvertently standing in Paul McCartney's spotlight for, like, 45 seconds — Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl strode to the stage to deliver a delightfully long-running acceptance speech, one that some thought took a few none-too-subtle jabs at the burgeoning Edm movement.
Surrounded by his bandmates and Wasting Light producer Butch Vig, Grohl held the band's Best Rock Performance award and spoke about the back-to-basics approach the Foos employed while making the album, which included eschewing computers and recording directly to 2-inch tape, saying in part:

This Sunday, the titans of the music industry will convene on the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, the annual celebration of back-slapping, glad-handling and, of course, melisma. And while most of you are probably just tuning in for Recording Academy President Neil Portnow's annual keynote address, I'll be watching this year's Grammys largely for the same reason I've watched them every year: to see if my predictions come true.
See, for just about as long as I've had this column, I've been making Grammy picks. It's an annual tradition, mostly because I love the Grammys — just about as much as I love gambling.

At this point, perhaps we can officially declare Eminem's comeback to be complete. He's already got the year's best-selling album (and a pair of the biggest singles), and now, well, he's the most-nominated artist of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards.
On Wednesday night (December 1), Em picked up a staggering 10 Grammy nods, including Song and Record of the Year (for "Love the Way You Lie") and Album of the Year (for Recovery, which is also up for Rap Album of the Year). It’s that time of the year already! The 53rd annual Grammy nominations (for 2011) were announced last night and it’s safe to say that Eminem made a clean sweep popping up in 10 categories. Love the Way you Lie is up for Song and Record of the Tear while Recovery has received nominations for Album and Rap Album of the Year. Just for a quick memory jog, remember who was a big winner at last year’s Grammys? Beyonce! Other big nominees this year include Bruno Mars with seven nominations, and Jay-z, Lady Gaga and Lady Antebellum with six each. John Legend and B.o.B follow closely with five. Katy Perry, who’s performing for VH1 Divas Salute the Troops (Sunday, Dec. 5, at 9/8c), scored four nominations, including one for Album of the Year for Teenage Dream. What’s your take on the nominees this year? Did anyone get left out?...

On Thursday night (September 2), Eminem and Jay-z took over Detroit's Comerica Park and delivered an epic concert that ranks up there with one of the hugest nights in hip-hop history. The pair of them obviously delivered incredible performances, but they also trotted out a cavalcade of extra-special guests for collaborations and special appearances. Dr. Dre, D12, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Drake, Young Jeezy and Memphis Bleek all made appearances on stage to drop guest verses and hype up the crowd on some of the biggest songs in the history of rap music (including a run through Dre's "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang," with Eminem taking Snoop Dogg's iconic lines).
The whole spectacle, with some of the biggest names in hip-hop (and thus the biggest names in all of music) all sharing stage time, recalled another great event in music history: "The Last Waltz," the gigantic retirement concert by the Band.

- That Air Bud kid sure grew up fast. No longer cheering on an unusually athletic golden retriever, former child-actor Kevin Zegers’ career took a vital turn with his role as Toby, the son of a pre-op male-to-female transsexual, in Transamerica. According to Variety, the handsome 23-year-old will be starring alongside Jason Ritter in the upcoming indie rock-u-drama The Perfect Age of Rock n’ Roll. Zegers will play a rock star whose second album takes a major flop, thus prompting him to hide away in his Long Island hometown. Loyal to its title, there will be plenty of music, as musicians Billy Morrison, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin and Sugar Blue will be making appearances. No stranger to musically-inclined pics, Spike Lee is signed on as exec producer. The pic will be directed by Scott Rosenbaum, who also penned the screenplay. Additionally featured in the rock pic are Peter Fonda, Taryn Manning and Lauren Holly.
