Ridley Scott talks Blade Runner as original screenwriter Hampton Fancher enters negotiations

21 May 2012 6:25 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

All eyes may be on Ridley Scott's Alien prequel Prometheus as its June release date rapidly approaches, but Scott is already gearing up for a return to another of his former sci-fi glories, the 1982 cult classic Blade Runner, and Deadline are reporting that screenwriter Hampton Fancher - who was responsible for co-writing the first film alongside David Peoples (Unforgiven, Twelve Monkeys) - is currently in negotiations to pen the screenplay.

Production company Alcon Entertainment are now acknowledging that the new Blade Runner movie will be a sequel that takes place "some years after the first film concluded", and Scott has spoken briefly about his plans for the movie in an interview with The Daily Beast: "Funny enough, I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week. We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist."

Blade Runner Original Writer Hampton Fancher To Script Sequel

21 May 2012 12:45 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Blade Runner writer Hampton Fancher is in talks to develop the story for the developing “Blade Runner” sequel with Ridley Scott.

Fancher co-wrote the original film, which is based on the novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sleep by acclaimed sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. It was directed by Scott in 1982 and, while considered a commercial flop on release, has become one of the cornerstones of the sci-fi genre.

The film follows Harrison Ford’s character Rick Deckard in the (at the time, distant) future of 2019, where he earns a living as a Blade Runner, an agent tasked with tracking down and destroying a group of rogue androids, known as Replicants.

There have been numerous attempts to create a follow up film to the original. Scott has been involved with most of these, at one stage working on a sequel to be called “Metropolis”, which would focus on off world colonies, »

Female Protagonist In Ridley's "Blade Runner" Sequel

18 May 2012 10:11 AM, PDT | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

With director Ridley Scott confirming "we will definitely be featuring a female protagonist", screenwriter Hampton Fancher, co-writer of the original 1982 feature "Blade Runner" (with David Peoples), is in talks to reunite with Scott for Alcon Entertainment's developing "Blade Runner" sequel. Alcon Entertainment is producing the film with Scott's Scott Free Productions, Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin.

The biggest question unanswered in the original "Blade Runner" film, set in Los Angeles, in the year 2019, is whether or not 'Rick Deckard', the "one-man slaughterhouse", forced into killing android 'replicants', is also unknowingly, a replicant himself.

Scott's "Blade Runner" film was based on author Philip K Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep".

"It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction," said producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

Original Blade Runner Screenwriter to Reteam with Ridley Scott for Sequel

18 May 2012 9:17 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

With the release of Ridley Scott's Prometheus now less than a month away, we've got an update on an upcoming project that will allow him to revisit another one of his seminal early works. Last summer we were all shocked when it was announced that Scott had signed on to direct a new Blade Runner movie, although at the time it was unclear if it would end up being a sequel, prequel or just a spin-off. This week it has been confirmed that the movie is indeed a sequel, and one of the original film's screenwriters will be returning to help him continue the story. Unfortunately, it looks like the earlier rumours of Harrison Ford starring in the film are probably not accurate. They've got a new protagonist in mind and her name is not Rick Deckard. According to a press release from Warner Brothers, screenwriter Hampton Fancher is »

This summer, Scott is releasing Prometheus, the mysterious semi-prequel to Alien. Now, after many months of rumor-mongering, it looks like the director will be making a return trip to his other sci-fi classic. In a press release, Alcon Entertainment announced that Hampton Fancher, one of the two credited writers on the original Blade Runner, is planning to reunite with Scott to work on a sequel to the movie.

Director set to join forces again with writer Hampton Fancher as new film revealed to be sequel to 1982 classic with female lead

Ridley Scott's return to Blade Runner will be a sequel featuring a female protagonist, the veteran British director has confirmed. Alcon Entertainment, which owns the follow-up rights to the 1982 science fiction classic, announced in August that it had pulled off a coup by engaging the veteran British director to revisit one of his greatest triumphs, but it was unclear at the time what form the new film would take.

That uncertainty has now been dispelled, however, after Scott enlarged on an Alcon statement revealing that "the new story will take place some years after the first film concluded". "I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week," the director told aceshowbiz.com. "We have a very good take on it. And we'll definitely be featuring a female protagonist. »

Blade Runner 2 Details!

18 May 2012 1:22 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Hands up who’s cacking themselves with excitement over Alien prequel Prometheus. Thought so. Despite initial concerns over Ridley Scott returning to a franchise all but destroyed by piss-poor sequels and crossovers, the film looks – let’s be honest here – fucking awesome.

The same concerns were voiced when news came a few months back that Scott was also planning to return to another of his most beloved films, Blade Runner. But now, with Prometheus-fever hitting critical mass, the thought of another Blade Runner sounds tickety-boo and a half. Further to this, it has just been announced that original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher may return. Though plot details are sparse for now, we can confirm the film will take place some years after the original, and that it may stem from Scott and Fancher’s original plan, to produce several movies based on ideas from Phillip K. Dick’s original book, »

Original Screenwriter Returns To Blade Runner Sequel

Hampton Fancher, who along with David Peoples co-wrote the screenplay to the Ridley Scott film Blade Runner from the Philip K. Dick novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, has got himself a new job.  Well, a new old job, writing the screenplay for Scott’s sequel to his own cult classic film.  It’s not difficult to imagine the studio bringing Fancher on board in order to lend this movie some “street cred,” and it’s also not difficult to imagine the blood-thirsty howls of die-hard fans of the original film have in no way been quelled by this move, including those you can hear right here at the Complex.

But just in case it does, let me add this log to the fire: I don’t like Blade Runner and I don’t really care if they make a sequel to it.

Oh, hear that?  It’s the »

Ridley’s universal robots: artificial life in Alien, Blade Runner and Prometheus

20 April 2012 8:18 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Alien, Blade Runner and Prometheus all display an interest in artificial life. Here, we look at Ridley Scott's complex depiction of androids...

“All of those moments will be lost, like tears in rain... Time to die.”

Those final words marked not only the death of existentialist replicant Roy Batty in 1982’s Blade Runner, but also Ridley Scott’s 30-year departure from the science fiction genre. With Alien, released in 1979, and Blade Runner, released three years later, Ridley Scott established a visual style which would define the way sci-fi movies were shot for decades afterwards, and it’s little surprise that his belated return to the genre, with this summer’s Prometheus, has been the subject of so much scrutiny, and such intense anticipation.

It could even be argued that, in Scott’s career after 1982, he never bettered Alien or Blade Runner, despite the financial success of such movies as Black Hawk Down, »

Previewing San Francisco 2012

The 55th San Francisco International Film Festival (site), opening tomorrow and running through May 3, "will seem comfortingly the same" to many in the Bay Area, writes G Allen Johnson in the Chronicle:

[A] lavish opening-night film and party, a rocking closing-night film and, in the two weeks between, 172 more films from 45 countries and tributes to distinguished celebrities... But behind the scenes, it's been the most challenging year in the festival's history. Two executive directors of the San Francisco Film Society have died — Graham Leggat, who lost a battle to cancer in August at 51; and his replacement, independent film maestro Bingham Ray, who had two strokes and died at 57 while attending the Sundance Film Festival in January. He had been on the job only 10 weeks.

Justin Lin to Direct 'Lone Wolf and Cub' Adaptation

30 March 2012 11:59 AM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

The ever classic Lone Wolf and Cub series will see the big screen in yet another incarnation.

Fast Five director Justin Lin is set to helm the project, and he feels like a good man for the job. Lin has shown himself to be very competent in arranging highly entertaining action films with just the right amount of drama, which is the sort of chemistry needed by Lone Wolf and Cub. Even better, David and Janet Peoples have been hired on to write the script. This is the team behind Blade Runner, as well as 12 Monkeys. David Peoples also wrote Clint Eastwood's 1992 Unforgiven, which was just a wonderful film.

That such talented people are behind such a classic samurai manga bodes extremely well. Lone Wolf and Cub is something that is nearly sacred to many people; it is refreshing to hear of such a project being undertaken with such »
