Protagonist Pictures has released a first look at “Vita & Virginia,” currently in post-production. Protagonist is handling worldwide sales for the drama at American Film Market. “Vita & Virginia,” which stars Elizabeth Debicki as writer Viginia Woolf and Gemma Arterton as Vita Sackville West, follows the passionate relationship of the literary pair from the Bloomsbury set.

The film, set in the 1920s, is based on the relationship between the women, when Sackville West pursues Woolf, no matter the cost. The filmmakers characterize the films as a “timeless love story, told in a contemporary style, about two women who smashed through social barriers to find solace in their forbidden connection.”

Chanya Button directs from a script she co-wrote with Eileen Atkins. Pic also stars Isabella Rossellini, Rupert Penry-Jones and Peter Ferdinando. Evangelo Kioussis for Mirror Prods. and Katie Holly for Blinder Films produce. Executive producers are Simon Baxter, Christopher Figg, Nicolas Sampson, Norman Merry, Dave Bishop and Gemma Arterton.

Elizabeth Debicki and Isabella Rossellini join Gemma Arterton in Vita & Virginia

Protagonist Pictures has announced that Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet) have joined Gemma Arterton (The Girl with All the Gifts) in the upcoming period drama Vita & Virginia, based on the love letters of Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West.

Arterton will take on the role of socialite Vita Sackville-West, with Debicki portraying Virginia Woolf (a role that was originally reported to be filled by Eva Green). The film will also feature Rupert Penry-Jones (The Strain) and Peter Ferdinando (Ghost in the Shell).

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Night Manager actress Elizabeth Debicki will play the writer Virginia Woolf in Vita & Virginia, the upcoming period drama based on the love letters between Woolf and 1920s socialite Vita Sackville-West.

Gemma Arterton is attached to play Vita in the drama, the sophomore feature from British director Chanya Button (Burn, Burn, Burn).

Elizabeth Debicki, Isabella Rossellini Join Virginia Woolf Biopic ‘Vita & Virginia’
Elizabeth Debicki and Isabella Rossellini have joined the cast of Virginia Woolf biopic “Vita & Virginia” for Protagonist Pictures, it was announced Wednesday by Protagonist CEO Dave Bishop. The finance, production and sales company has also closed a deal with distributor Thunderbird Releasing to take all U.K. rights on the film.

The Night Manager” star Debicki, who recently appeared in James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2,” will play Virginia Woolf opposite Gemma Arterton in the period drama, which tells the true story of the unconventional love affair between socialite Vita Sackville-West (Arterton) and Woolf. Rossellini’s role has not been announced.

“‘Vita & Virginia’ is the true story of two of the most fascinating and progressive women of their time, who end up in the throes of a passionate affair which shapes their work and changes their lives forever,” said Vanessa Saal, managing director of sales and distribution for Protagonist.
