So I finally joined the clamoring hordes who have gone to see The Avengers and, yes, I had a really good time. No spoilers but I can define my favorite scene in two words that won’t spoil the show: “Puny god.” ‘Nuff said. Those who have seen it know what I’m talking about. I also really enjoyed the little scene at the end of all the credits.
It’s made a billion dollars worldwide, and its already on its way towards making a bazillion, I’m sure. Marvel has played it very canny, building up to it by way of Iron Man (I and II), Thor and Captain America. You’d almost think that The Avengers success was inevitable and you’d be terribly, terribly wrong.
I got two words for you.

The seemingly endless wait for the Syfy summer schedule is finally over! There is good news and bad, and one thing that is both good and bad. Let’s start with that: the Eureka Season Finale. We love Eureka, so every episode is good news; the fact that it’s a series finale, not so much. Mark your calendars – and have plenty of Kleenex in stock – for July 16 at 9/8c. Right after Comic-Con, which is early this year. We’ll see if that means a panel or not.
The good news: Warehouse 13 and Alphas return on July 23. The hmmm news is that Lost Girl will move to Fridays at 10 on July 20. Hey That’S Haven’S Spot. So Where The Heck Is Haven? Admittedly we had a head’s up that Haven would be pushed to fall when we learned that the DVDs for Season 2 weren’t being released until September but Argh. »

From film to phenomenon, Marvel Avengers Assemble is keeping up the momentum as it dominates the UK box office for a third weekend running.
The superhero movie has taken more than £40 million to date in the UK.
The film has already grossed more than the entire runs of superhero predecessors Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Hulk, Captain America and Thor, with audiences still flocking to see the comic book epic.
This is the first Marvel Studios film and the fifth Walt Disney Studios release to reach this milestone.
The news comes just a week after Marvel Avengers Assemble shattered records with a $207.4 million opening weekend in the Us, the biggest domestic debut of all time.
As one of only 12 films in history to gross $1 billion, it joins Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides »

Check out this great video blog from SoundWorks Collection focusing on the sound of The Avengers. In the video they talk with Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer, and Re-recording Mixer Christopher Boyes about his work on the epic film. This is definitely one of those films that will end up getting a lot of technical award nominations. I honestly believe that this is going to be one of the biggest movies ever. Enjoy the video!

Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film, which ties together such characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Taking center stage this time is Nick Fury (played once again by the note-perfect Samuel L. Jackson), leader of the peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Maybe you’ve heard of the Avengers. Oh sorry, Marvel’s The Avengers. The Avengers is the brainchild of Marvel Studios, the summer tentpole to end all tentpoles, the superhero fanboy’s wet dream, nerd perfection in movie form. Ever since 2008, when Robert Downey Jr. completed his comeback and became the star he rightfully should have always been with the release of Iron Man, Marvel Studios (now in conjunction with Disney) has been carefully planning this moment. Each new movie (the end credits scenes in particular), from Thor to Captain America, progressed the movement of the Avengers Initiative, spearheaded by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and loyal deadpan standby Agent Colson (Clark Gregg = absolutely terrific), spun a web between all of the various heroes of the Marvel universe for this massive event that had previously only existed in Saturday morning cartoons. Loki is still being a jerk.
This is really par for the course from last time we saw him. He's still after the power of the cosmic Tessaract device, and he's made an unholy alliance with a twisted race of aliens in order to get it. With support from his new-found friends, he sets out to gain control of the powerful device and thus subjugate the entire planet to his jerkish whim.
His aspirations run counter to pretty much the entirety of humanity, as well as at least one Asgardian. As we've seen in the series of Marvel Comics films that have come out in recent times, this is the final culmination of »

The danger of a film like Marvel’s The Avengers is that it will be treated too much as product. All of the Marvel Studios films are products, no question, but the difference between the two Iron Man films is that the first was product born of love for a character, and the sequel’s character work nearly collapsed under the weight of the various plot threads that set up future installments. Fans, fear not: The Avengers is product born of love, honed by professionals, and it surpasses any film ever made in its genre, period.
After each of the major Marvel heroes received his own origin-story film, this is a chance for them to have yet another origin, the tale of how they came together as one to fight a planet-wide menace led by the nefarious Loki (Tom Hiddleston »

The Avengers Directed by: Joss Whedon Written by: Joss Whedon (screenplay), Zak Penn and Joss Whedon (story) Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner Well, here we are. The ambitious plan set in motion by Marvel Studios four years ago with the release of Iron Man has finally reached its inevitable zenith, with all of their superheroes coming together in one mega-blockbuster to rule all blockbusters. Despite the fact that this movie is a fanboy's wet dream on paper, in reality, it probably shouldn't work. All of this star power and all of these disparate characters vying for screen time had the potential to result in an incoherent mess. And yet somehow, not only does Joss Whedon pull it off, but he also makes it look easy. I came into this movie with without any real expectations or built-in affinity for the characters, »

If it's somehow escaped your notice, "The Avengers" is in theaters today. One of the biggest gambles in blockbuster history, it looks to have paid off; the reviews have been hugely positive (read one of ours here), it's already closing on $300 million from the international box office, and stands to break records over this weekend in the U.S. as well.
The media presence has been almost inescapable. With a huge cast, and the verbose Joss Whedon at the helm, there've been more interviews with those involved than you could possibly keep up with. To help you catch up, we've assembled a collection of highlights of what's been revealed about "The Avengers" in recent months and weeks. Some minor spoilers may lie ahead, so if you haven't seen the film yet, keep it bookmarked and check back after the movie.

Running Time: 2 hrs 22 mins

Who’S It For? If you’re the kind of moviegoer who saw the previous Marvel flicks leading up to this (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, The Incredible Hulk), then you owe it to those previous commitments to see what it all adds up to. However, if you haven’t seen any of those aforementioned movies, this one is still a blast to experience. Basically, you won’t enjoy this movie if you absolutely hate spectacle in your entertainment.

Director: Joss Whedon Writers: Joss Whedon, Zak Penn Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. With the final words, “I’m here to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative,” Jackson represented a movement away from the formulaic superhero film toward a project that would restore the glory of the comic books that inspired the hero craze in the first place. The Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon sat down for an interview with GQ (via The Playlist) in which he discusses the screenplay for the film and doesn't necessarily sugar coat his words when it comes to his decision to thrown out Zak Penn's earlier draft and start from scratch. Here's the section of the interview I'm referring to: When The Avengers came around, Whedon was coming off two canceled TV shows and a direct-to-the-Internet musical. I ask him if, given recent history, he would have hired himself to do the job. "Hell yeah," he says. "I'm a writer-director, and I adore comic books, and I tend to work fast--which, given their schedule and the fact that they didn't have a script, is useful." In fact, there was a script, by veteran superhero-movie scribe Zak Penn, whose association with Marvel's movie-verse goes back to 2006; he'll share a "story by" credit with Whedon on The Avengers. »

While screenwriter Zak Penn may have received a "story by" credit on "The Avengers", based on a recent GQ article (thanks to the Playlist for bringing it to my attention) it appears he didn't have much of anything to do with the completed film hitting theaters this Friday. "There was a script...there just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of," "Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon told the gentleman's magazine after reporter Alex Pappadernas called him out on his earlier claim that Marvel "didn't have a script" when he was first brought on board. The Avengers is the pinnacle of Phase I of Marvel Studios’ master plan. The story is heavily inspired by The Ultimates graphic novel by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch, modernizing the Avengers to a new audience–as well as re-imagining Nick Fury’s appearance as if he were played by Samuel L. Jackson. So when Iron Man hit the screens in 2008, fans were delighted to see in a post-credit scene featuring Jackson, the first hint of what to expect. Marvel wasn’t just aiming at making a successful film. They wanted to make an entire universe that existed on the big screen. One by one, the pieces fell into place, the history was established, and the scope was expanded to several realms. Four years later The Avengers lives and thrives on the big screen.
Director Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity) wrote the screenplay and story and nailed every character trait. »
