The Innkeepers (2011)

16 May 2012 4:38 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by: Ti West

Written by: Ti West

Starring: Sara Paxton, Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis

After over 100 years of service, The Yankee Pedlar Inn in Connecticut is shutting its doors for good. The last remaining employees, Claire (Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy), are determined to uncover proof of what many believe to be one of New England's most haunted hotels. As the inn's final days draw near, odd guests start to check in and the pair of minimum wage "ghost hunters" begin to experience strange and alarming events that may ultimately cause them to be mere footnotes in the hotel's long mysterious history.

There's part of me that feels like I would have not liked this as much if I had not been familiar with The House of the Devil. Technically, in some ways, I didn't love The Innkeepers, but I did appreciate it when all was said and done. »

Checking In With Austin Filmmakers Bob Byington, Bryan Poyser, Alex Karpovsky, and More

14 May 2012 4:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

What have I been doing lately? I have been stalking Bryan Poyser (Lovers of Hate) on Facebook. Well, it is not technically stalking since he accepted my friendship, right? Truth be told, I am not actually a Facebook stalker, I am merely doing my job. (Really!) I am keeping tabs on the production of Poyser’s latest film, The Bounceback. As I write this, Poyser is entering week three of the Austin-based production which stars Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism), Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield), Sara Paxton (The Innkeepers), and Addison Timlin (Californication). The primary cast might not be very Austin-centric, but the crew – which includes producer Megan Gilbride, cinematographer Pj Raval, and editor Don Swaynos – certainly is. My love for Lovers of Hate and Dear Pillow knows no bounds, so let’s just say that I am eagerly awaiting the release of The Bounceback. Poyser is not the only Austin filmmaker lucky enough to be stalked by yours »

Dan Schaffer’s “The Scribbler” Starts Filming This Week

9 May 2012 2:55 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Filming on Dan Schaffer’s graphic novel The Scribbler begins later this week in Los Angeles for a live action theatrical film release.

Schaffer’s graphic novel was originally published in 2006 by Image Comics.  A new “director’s cut” of the graphic novel is being prepared by the recently re-launched First Comics™ for release in conjunction with the film’s opening. Schaffer penned the screenplay adapted from his graphic novel.

The thriller centers on Suki, a young woman confined in a mental institution and being treated with an experimental machine dubbed “The Siamese Burn, designed to eliminate multiple personalities.  As the “treatment” progresses, Suki starts to be haunted by the realization that if “The Siamese Burn” is successful, which one of her personalities will be the survivor?

Katie Cassidy, already with comic connections as Dinah Lance in the CW pilot Arrow, stars as the title character Suki.  The cast also »

DVD Playhouse – May 2012

By Allen Gardner

Shame (20th Century Fox) Director Steve McQueen’s harrowing portrait of a Manhattan sex addict (Michael Fassbender, in the year’s most riveting performance) whose psyche goes into overload when his equally-troubled sister (Carey Mulligan) visits unexpectedly. Exquisitely-made on every level, save for the screenplay, which makes its point after about thirty minutes. While it tries hard to be a modern-day Last Tango in Paris, this fatal flaw makes it fall somewhat short. The much- ballyhooed sex scenes and frontal nudity are the least-interesting things about the film, incidentally, which is still a must-see for discriminating adults who seek out challenging material. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Being John Malkovich (Criterion) Spike Jonze’s madcap film of Charlie Kaufman’s script, regarding a socially-disenfranchised puppeteer (John Cusack) who finds a portal into the mind of actor »

Ashley Bell Added To Austin-Based Rom-Com The Bouncebacks

4 May 2012 8:19 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Fans of Zooey Deschanel.s Fox sitcom New Girl know it as .backsliding.. Perhaps after Ashley Bell.s new rom-com comes out, we.ll start calling it The Bounceback. I.m referring to the act of slipping into the comfortable routines of being with an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend, even though you know the relationship doesn.t work and being around each other is combustible. That appears to be the plot (or driving force) behind Bell.s new feature, which THR says she.ll begin filming later this month in Austin, Texas. Directed by Bryan Poyser, Bounceback follows two former couples who spend the weekend in the Texas hot spot working through their relationships. Bell reportedly plays the ex-girlfriend of Cloverfield actor Michael Stahl-David. But these horror veterans aren.t the only ones recruited for Poyser.s rom-com. Look for Sara Paxton, cutie-blonde star of The Innkeepers and Shark Night 3D »

Bradford Film Festival reviews: The Innkeepers

3 May 2012 6:07 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

The Innkeepers

American film-maker, Ti West, has made a name for himself in the horror genre with previous releases like Cabin Fever 2, V/H/S, The House Of The Dead and Trigger Man. He sticks to what he knows in his latest film, minimalist chiller, The Innkeepers.

At The Yankee Pedlar Inn, young employees Luke (Pat Healy) and Claire (Sara Paxton) are keeping the hotel ticking before it closes its doors for good. To alleviate the boredom, Luke has built a website tracking ghostly goings on and Claire is determined to uncover the identity of spirits haunting the place.

A guest many years earlier, Madelaine O'Malley killed herself in the hotel after being jilted on her wedding day. To avoid scandal, hotel management hid her body for two days before it was discovered. Rumour has it she has been spotted over the years since the hotel re-opened in the 1960s. »
