• Veteran broadcaster ends run with show on RSC
• Highbrow swansong for programme's 31-year stint
Melvyn Bragg's final voice-over on the last regular edition of the South Bank Show after 31 years is cleverly double-edged.
"The brave work is continuing," he notes, "keeping this now well-established British institution full of new life as it moves into the future."
Bragg is speaking about the Royal Shakespeare Company, subject of the final programme three decades after it featured in the second instalment of his arts show, but the note of optimistic defiance could also be taken to refer to another well-established British artistic institution moving on : himself.
Earlier this year, ITV released a carefully-phrased press release announcing that the South Bank Show was ending because of Bragg's retirement.
In fact, it seemed clear at the time – and has become more so since – that the relationship between the events was reversed: Bragg was »

Photograph at left by Adam Kuehl. Do you remember what you were doing when you were seven years old? When I was that age, I was playing with Star Wars action figures and seeing how much Bubblicious I could cram into my mouth. But not Emmy Rossum. At the tender age of seven, she was making her professional operatic debut. She performed in Carmen at New York's Metropolitan Opera, and The Damnation of Faust at Carnegie Hall. She shared the stage with Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, acting in dozens of productions in six different languages, all before she turned 18. Emmy Rossum is living proof that you probably wasted your adolescence. She's also done pretty well for herself as a young adult. Remember when child actors used to burn out on drugs and become tabloid fodder? Rossum decided to skip the Drew Barrymore fuck-all-of-you-i-want-more-pain-meds stage of her career and move directly into making movies. »

Spanish tenor Jose Carreras, one-third of the famous Three Tenors along with Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, has reportedly announced that he will be taking his final vow from the operatic stage.
The 62-year-old opera singer told The Times that his career is "done."
He said, "If I can do concert recitals, adapting the repertoire to my needs, then no problem, that's good enough. But with operas, unless the right circumstances come up, my career is done."
His retirement means that out of The Three Tenors, Domingo, his fellow Spanish singer, is the last one standing. Italian Pavarotti has succumbed to cancer in 2007 at the age of 71.
