Kevin Smith’s Next Movie: Mankind Turns to Satan to Battle Giant, Rapturing Jesus

30 December 2013 6:21 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Kevin Smith has announced a brand new movie titled “Helena Handbag” that will find ”mankind teaming up with Hell to save existence from extinction at the hands of a Rapturing giant Jesus,” according to the filmmaker’s Facebook page. The script, dated Dec. 30, 2013 and credited to Smith and longtime collaborator Scott Mosier, will be based on a story from the 52nd episode of Smith’s popular SModcast podcast titled “The (C)Rapture.” Smith had announced his intention to retire from filmmaking following completion of his upcoming horror film “Tusk,” which stars Justin Long and Michael Parks, though he seems to have had a. »

Kevin Smith's new movie 'Tusk' based on an Internet hoax

19 December 2013 9:00 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

It turns out you really can make a movie about anything -- just ask director Kevin Smith. He stopped by "The Arsenio Hall Show" Wednesday (Dec. 18) to talk about his newest film, "Tusk."

"It's a move about a guy who tried to turn another guy into a walrus," Kevin says. "It came from this thing I read online." It all started when Smith was chatting on a podcast with his friend, Scott Mosier. They found an online posting from someone looking for a roommate who would dress as a walrus once a day for free room and board. Sounds simple enough, right?

It turns out the posting was fake, which makes a lot of sense, but that didn't stop Smith from spinning the idea off into what sounds like a pretty chilling horror movie about a human getting sewn into a walrus suit by a madman. "This is as stupid as 'The Purge'. »

Celebrating the Tasty, Tasty Human: Five Cannibal Film Favorites

17 December 2013 9:00 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The American remake of We Are What We Are (review) hits VOD on December 17, and while the Mexican thriller of the same name is superior, Jim Mickle’s take on ritualistic cannibalism is a damned fine film in its own right and certainly one of the better cannibal-centric movies to come out recently.

Making a list of the “best” cannibal movies out there is a fool’s errand, if only because it invariably leads to someone saying I have no idea what I’m talking about because I left this film or that film off the list, prompting me to question everything I know and love. You proud of yourself now?

Therefore, instead of a “Best Cannibal Films” list, I’m treating you to a list of my favorite cannibal-centric movies. And no, Cannibal Holocaust is not on the list ‘cause that movie is gross and made me leave the room twice while watching it. »

Kevin Smith’s Tusk Will Be Distributed By A24 And Demarest Films

11 December 2013 6:41 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Kevin Smith’s latest film, Tusk, has only been completed for a short while, but has been actively looking for a means to get marketing capital and distribution to movie theaters. Ending Smith’s search quickly, fledgling distribution and finance company A24 (Spring Breakers, The Bling Ring) and Demarest Films have teamed up to co-finance and distribute the film, seeing it to completion for a release late next year.

“I’m as happy as the day Miramax bought ‘Clerks!’ said Smith.

The film is based on a SModcast episode about an ad for free lodging, with one caveat being that the lodger would have to dress as and act like a walrus for several hours per day, with that piece of the episode eventually morphing into a full film. There’s not a lot of plot information beyond that, but we do know that a podcaster responding to the ad in the film goes missing, »

Nelson Mandela Dies At 95 After Long Sickness

Nelson Mandela, the former South African President and icon of the country’s anti-apartheid movement, died on Thursday. He was 95.

Nelson Mandela Dies

Over the last several years, Mandela was frequently hospitalized for health issues relating to a chronic lung infection. Mandela was released from a Pretoria hospital on Sept. 1 after an 85-day stay. At the time, his condition was still listed as critical, and it was reported that he’d continue receiving treatment at his home outside of Johannesburg.

"He probably will be remembered both inside and outside South Africa as a political saint," said Michael Parks, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for his covering of Mandela and South Africa's in the height of the apartheid struggle. "He had flaws that he had to overcome. He had a temper he had to deal with. He had to deal with what was going to be life imprisonment. Not all his decisions were great decisions, »
